PowerRIP validation issues

PowerRIP validation issues

CNET staff
A Birmy Graphics web page has "a Disk-less validation method you can use to unlock PowerRIP on your iMac." It also has a list of "validation issues" relevant for any Mac. These include:
  • Attempts to copy (backup) the validation disk will render the disk useless.
  • Anti-virus software can attempt to scan the disk and may write a small "speedscan" file to the disk -- it can also interfere with the file transfer.
  • Updating Hard Disk drivers (with Apple's Drive Setup, for example) can cause the RIP to lose track of the validation key file.
  • Upgrading or updating the Mac OS can completely destroy the validation key file.
  • Utility programs like Norton Utilities (especially FileSaver and CrashGuard) can inadvertently move or delete the Validation Key file.
  • Disk scanners (Norton Disk Doctor, ScanDisk, Apple Disk First Aid, etc.) can also inadvertently delete or modify the Validation Key file.
  • Drive defragmenters (Norton Speed Disk, etc.) can inadvertently move the Validation Key file.

As a work-around to the FileSaver/CrashGuard issue, David Hoffer was told by Birmy to remove the Validation Key before running Norton Utilities (but I wonder if even this is sufficient). Birmy also told him to install an extension called "Ignore DebugStr INIT" to prevent Type 12 errors he was having while running Mac OS 8.5 (I have not heard of this suggestion before).
