Problem changing names on a LaserJet 2200

Sue Watkins had a naming problem with HP LaserJet 2200 printers. She writes:

Using the LaserJet Utility that came with the printers (we purchased 6 of them), we attempted to name the printers, one by one. The utility said all was well and the printer was renamed but when we checked the printer remained "PET." We contacted HP about this and were told this is a recently known issue they are working on. The problem apparently is in the logic board of the printer and not the Jet Direct card.

As a work-around, HP suggested we put the Jet Direct card in an older HP printer, name it and then put the card back in the original 2200 printer. I did this to 4 of our printers today and it works. One caveat is finding the correct HP printer to use. At first I tried the closest one at hand, a 4000. Checking the Chooser to see where the card/printer were, I discovered that the 4000 printer sent i's network name to the new Jet Direct card without any intervention from software. However, it was the old printer's name. I did not want to start messing with the name of that printer since it was an office printer.

I scrounged around and found an HP 2100 printer that I could use. It did the trick quite well."

Update: Dave Provine writes: "I had exactly the same problem with a 2100, and fixed it exactly the same way."
