Sound output bugs in 10.0.2 confirmed We continue to get confirmation from many readers that, with Mac OS X 10.0.2, internal speakers now play sound even when external speakers or headphones are attached and selected for sound output.

On a related note, Mark Tuleweit writes: "The Mute key on my Apple Pro keyboard (attached to a G4 Cube with SoundSticks) no longer works after the 10.0.2 update. The volume up and down key still work though." Steve Crossman confirms this for his Cube.

William Timberman adds: "The volume keys work for me, but don't work properly - sometimes they don't respond, and sometimes they produce great jumps in volume, even when pressing the key to lower the volume. The mute key doesn't work at all. Everything worked okay with 10.0.1."

Also possibly related, a reader writes: "I have a G4 Cube and I'm using the Griffin iMic for audio output to my stereo. I just installed the iTunes and 10.0.2 updates. Now iMic does not work - although I have no problems with sound output through the standard Apple speakers that came with the G4 Cube. It's as if the driver for the iMic has been removed."

Work-arounds? One reader had the sound problem at startup, but found: "Unplugging and replugging the headphones eliminated that sound from the internal speakers."

Raul Regalado similarly writes: "After installing 10.0.2 on a beige G3, sound was coming out of the built-in speaker and not the external speakers. Pulling out and reinserting the cable into the sound output port properly diverted the sound to the external speakers and mutes the internal speaker, but the problem comes back after a restart."

No conflict? Jennifer Scott did not see this problem at all: "I am using a PowerBook G3 (Lombard) and Audion PR3 for OS X or with iTunes 1.1.1 for OS X. Plugging in headphones causes the system speakers to go quiet."

Tom Seibert adds: "They fixed the sound failure reported on dual 533 processor machines. Mine sound has consistently cutout after anywhere from a few seconds to 15 minutes when playing iTunes. After installing the updates, I have left iTunes running continuously. It works perfectly. I also am not having the problem reported on sound playing on internal and external speakers."

iTunes 1.1.1 CD burning error? A reader claims to have discovered a bug in iTunes 1.1.1: "When trying to burn a CD, if I select more tracks than will fit on the CD, iTunes 1.1.1 will start to burn the CD and recognize the 'error' too late. This results in a lost CD, and you'll have to force-quit iTunes."

CD burner fix? Regarding our previous report that Iomega ZipCD 650 (USB) did not work with iTunes 1.1.1, David Kiltz replies: "I had the same problem. I deleted all iTunes stuff (including the package in the Receipts folder). Did a clean install of iTunes 1.1.1 and it now recognized the USB burner!

Duplicate files appear In a MacFixIt Forums thread (Duplicate files after 10.0.2 update), several readers have been experiencing a bizarre file-duplication phenomenon after updating to 10.0.2. The main symptom is that folders with large numbers of files in them (over 250) list some of the files twice. (Thanks, Ken Williams.)
