DVD Player 3.1 is now available via Software Update. It adds features for DVD authoring, including the ability to select and play the contents of a 'VIDEO_TS' folder from a local volume. This update also adds AppleScript support for selection and playback of DVD content. A Script menu makes it easy to add and run custom scripts. Also new is a 'wide' layout for the info window and various stability enhancements.

Locator 0.7 is a graphical interface to OS X's built in locate-database which keeps track of all files on your hard drive. Because of the database, finding files using "locate" is very quick. This is a highly recommended utility, winner of a Toolbox Award last year.

WindowShade X 1.5.1 brings WindowShade functionality into Mac OS X. It has several bug fixes including: fixing a potential compatibility issue with 3rd party system enhancing utilities (Default Folder X, MaxMenus). Also, Startup Items check is smarter, it will automatically fix entries pointing to an older version of WindowShade X. It's another Toolbox Award winner.

FruitMenu 1.5.2 allows you to build your own Apple Menu, the way you like it. The update fixes a potential compatibility issue with 3rd party system enhancing utilities (Default Folder X, MaxMenus).

Firewalk X 2.0 is a full fledged firewall offering additional features such as blocking specific applications from using the network and interactive, real-time alerts. Firewalk X 2 does not rely on any underlying BSD tools, including Mac OS X's own built-in firewall (not a GUI for ipfw). However, Firewalk X 2 is completely compatible with the built-in firewall.

USB Overdrive X 10.0.0b4 is a universal USB driver for any USB mouse or trackball. Note: Lionel Artom-Ginzburg claims this update causes GLTerm to crash on launch.

Sonnet Tempo ATA100 2.2.3 is a firmware update that adds Mac OS X 10.0 support. You must be booted from OS 9 to run the Installer. However, Bob Murch found a work-around for those who have an iPod but do not have OS 9 on the drive: Copy the Installer to the iPod. Restart from an OS 9 Install CD and then run the Sonnet Installer from the iPod.

Short List Mac OS X software is being released and updated at such a high rate that listing and describing everything we find of interest would take up a disproportionate part of our home page. Here is today's "short list":
