    "DON'T UPGRADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

by kmjake on August 23, 2005

    Pros: haven't found any yet

Cons: screws up your whole system; Not compatible with Adobe Acrobat 5.0 and earlier; Takes more than 2 minutes to open a document; The fix for the delayed opening of documents doesn't work

Summary: I only upgraded from Office2000 because the computers on which I have to give my lectures have a newer version. I suspect they probably have OfficeXP. If you are in education or work at a University, you can get OfficeXP for $27 plus $8 shipping at Journeyed.com.

Here are the problems I've had in upgrading to Office2003. My scanner no longer works. It takes over 2 minutes to open a document in any office program.
You can see that Microsoft knows of this problem, by looking at article#839883 on Microsoft's site. They say there is a hotfix for it. I got the supposed hotfix and followed all instructions on the article page.
First of all when I tried to install the hotfix, I got the message that I already have a newer version of the service pack running.
Followed other instructions on the article page - changing registry.
Still takes >2 minutes to open a document.

Told Microsoft this and now they want me to pay for support. Incredible. They sell me something that makes my computer WORSE and they want me to pay more!!!!!!!!!!!
I've already spent another $100 to pay for a new version of Adobe Acrobat, because 5.0 is not compatible with Office2003.

Now I find out that other departments in our School of Medicine are not installing Office2003 because there are too many BUGS.

My advice: Do NOT buy this product.

I upgraded to Office 2003 in september, now while I know ther are a few Minor bugs like the scanner problem you mentioned, the Speed at which you open a document is entirely up to the speed of your computer. Next time try upgrading your computer before you post bad reviews on a product which is probably a worthwhile upgrade for the average user. Since upgrading I have had no problems and if anything it is faster than Office 10
