Pros Easy to buy / rent movies
Cons You may not actually be able to use the video you've purchased
Summary I successfully used Amazon's unbox to get an episode of 24 and a movie which I was able to watch on a cross-country flight. Shortly thereafter I ran into Windows problems and had to reinstall the OS and all of my software (including Unbox). Okay, no problem you say. So I then rent another movie for another cross country flight only to find that when I try to download it claims that I've already used my allotment of downloads?! I did NOT d/l it at all. Then on the Amazon web site it gives me a choice to download to one of two computers (mind you, I've only d/l'ed and used unbox with one PC). No matter which one I select it refuses to download the movie claiming again that I've already downloaded. Amazon was nice enough to refund my purchase but the bigger problem here is that if you ever have to reinstall Windows you WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO USE UNBOX AGAIN! Sounds like a curious 'feature' to embed in your software. My problem is compounded by the fact that this is a new PC so I guess I won't use unbox again for another 2-3 years until I have to replace my computer and start again from scratch.
Pros Easy to use. Can work with Media Center / Media Player.
Cons Video is choppy. Audio and video get out of sync.
Summary 1. I have a fast computer that is used primarily as a media center (mostly video).
2. I have tested Amazon's competitors to compare performance.
3. I have gone to Amazon's own help page to look for a solution.
OK... here we go. I really wanted to like this service... really! At first, I thought I had a winner. Download was easy and fast. Video file was easy to find.
After downloading the video (HD TV Episode), I played it using the Amazon Unbox player and found choppy video and audio often times not in sync with video. I tried playing with another player (this did take a little more work, but was able to get media player/media center to play Amazon DRM video). It was still choppy.
Next, I went to Xbox Video (Zune) and downloaded the same episode in HD. It was smooth as butter! I then went to iTunes and downloaded another episode of the same show (not HD this time) and it was also smooth.
I periodically go back to the downloaded Amazon video to make sure I wasn't having a computer glitch, but no luck... still had choppy video issues.
My advice: use another service until Amazon finally fixes this.
By the way... I'm running Windows 8.
Pros Good selection of movies on Amazon.
Cons Too much of a hassle to view any. Way inferior to such services as Netflix or Vongo, or even Blockbuster.
Summary Purchased a movie and tried to download it to my computer to watch using the PC Unbox player. Not only did it fail to download, but it disappeared twice from my online library. This happened twice. Had to have Amazon reset it each time. Third time, I tried to watch it online. Quality was miserable. So I tried downloading a third time. This time it worked, however, the Unbox player claimed I had a problem with my DMR components that it could not fix. There is nothing wrong with my DMR, I watch videos on my computer using Windows Media Player all the time. On top of everything, the video downloaded at a speed of 384 kbps taking several hours to complete, despite the fact the at my internet connection was at about 800 kbps at the time. This service is just a bad egg. Cost me the price of a video ($3) and two days worth of frustration.
Pros None - cant get it working
Cons it stinks they make you use there player and i have read all kinds of problems online. i will be canceling the charge with my cc company as soon as it shows up, amazon says no refunds even though i could not download it at all
Summary waste of time dont bother, you can spend a few bucks more buy the dvd have it to freely watch anywhere and even convert the vob files for your computer or ipod
Pros Everything downloaded fine and as far as I can tell, everything has played well.
Cons You can not transfer your videos to DVD or VCD. If I purchase a movie or TV show, I want to be able to watch it on something other than my computer. Amazon immediately downloaded without asking my form of payment - did not like that!
Summary It's a good service, if you like watching the videos on your computer or have the ability to stream to your TV, but I wish they would make it so you can creat at least on DVD so you can watch on another platform.
