Back in the mid-1990s, AltaVista ruled the roost when it came to Internet search. Then Google hit the scene in 1998 and changed everything. With its bare-bones interface and innovative approach to search, Google became an overnight success, adding clever new features, such as image queries, desktop search, and an automated news service, at a clip that's left the former search leaders playing catch-up. With the addition of the forthcoming My Search History, you'll soon have a means of saving your searches the way you can now on A9, AOL Search, and Ask Jeeves. Although Google lacks the multimedia search features of, say, Yahoo or AltaVista, the company promises to add these features very soon. However, none of the other search engines comes close to Google for local searches or detail-specific mapping. Finally, Google offers the most technical support within its help section. While this may seem a trivial feature, we suggest that understanding how to limit your search results to specific words found only on the title of a page can be a real time-saver.

Google's main search page is clean, crisp, and very familiar.

Google's spare, simple user interface marked the beginning of the end for the "more is better" Web design of the late 1990s; indeed, Google's oft-imitated look and feel was so successful that it's hardly changed since its 1999 launch. Besides the colorful Google logo, the site's main page is mostly bare except for the search form, the buttons for search and I'm Feeling Lucky (which takes you straight to the page of the first most relevant result), and links labeled Web, Images, Groups, News, Froogle, and Local.

Sponsored search results are aligned along the right-hand side of the screen, making them easy to ignore.

Google's main search results include boldface page names, short descriptions, URLs, cached pages (great for viewing older versions of frequently updated Web pages), and links to similar pages. Sponsored links are relegated to the right-hand column--a welcome distinction from all the other search engines in our roundup, which list sponsored results above and below the main search hits. While there are no elaborate boxed sections that aggregate top image, news, movie, and video links for your queries (as with Ask Jeeves's Smart Search), Google does pull up news results for search terms and will display a forecast for weather-specific queries. Image search remains a strong point for Google (indeed, it was one of the first search engines with thumbnail-based search results), and Google leads in its ability to filter images by size, color, file type, and domain. Groups searches comb through the increasingly archaic (and, sadly, spam-packed) Usenet newsgroups, while Froogle is a powerful, speedy shopping engine that indexes hundreds of online merchants. Google's exhaustive news searches lack images, although the main, automatically generated news portal includes plenty of photos. Google's Local searches are easily the best we've seen. You can find businesses near your street address (addresses that can be saved for later use) and produce maps on the fly (using Google's impressive click-and-drag mapping service, maps.google.com, which now includes satellite images), plus get reviews from online guides such as Gayot, Citysearch, DigitalCity, MobilTravelGuide and even driving directions. We missed multimedia-specific audio and video searches, although Google is beta-testing a new search option for video clips. Meanwhile, both Lycos and Yahoo best Google when it comes to people-specific searches.

Google's latest offering is Web Accelerator, a Windows download that supposedly speeds up surfing for broadband users by delivering cached versions of Web pages. The beta, which as of May 9 was no longer available on Google's site, raised the hackles of privacy advocates after reports that the app was serving cached copies of password-protected discussion sites, making it appear as if the user was signed in as another person. (SSL-protected pages on sites such as financial institutions aren't cached by the service, according to Google.) Industry watchers also wonder what kind of Web-surfing statistics are being collected by Web Accelerator. Google representatives told
CNET News.com that it's fixing the page-caching bug and that the service won't be used to track the surfing habits of specific users.

Google boasts plenty of impressive extras, including desktop search, which finds files and e-mail on your hard drive in a flash. Google's support page offers descriptions of different categories of searches available on the site and detailed search examples, including individual search operators (such as Allintitle, which limits your search to words found only in the title, not in the body text). For this, we feel Google goes beyond the competition in terms of technical support.

Tucson Hebrew Academy is a great for the whole family!

Pros: My children are given lots of personal attention, the school accommodates different learning styles and levels really well. They have art, music, pe, computer lab each week. The integrated curriculum is exciting, dynamic, and engaging for my kids.

Cons: Some families choose to complain rather than try to improve the school. This can have a negative effect that influences others around them. The school could improve by displaying the children's great art work sooner than the show in March.

Review: I have two children in the school and one needs some assistance while the other learns quickly and needs to be challenged. The school does a wonderful job accommodating both ends of the spectrum. The staff and families are friendly and the education is fantastic! When a student is studying say Japan in social studies, in art they are learning about Japanese artists and what they produce. Likewise, in music they study Japanese music. This type of integration is dynamic, and truly teaches my children to think. The majority of jobs my children's generation will acquire as adults don't currently exist. This means they need to become thinkers, problem solvers and really understand the material. The arts, theater, and music is a lively addition and nice balance to the rigorous academics. I really like the personal attention that my children get, the sense of community that I feel as a part of the school. The school does a lot for the parents too. Every event there is great food and often other gifts and things to enjoy. I can't fail to brag about the food. Brendan the school's chef hand makes all the school meals and the children say his food is amazing and better than my home cooking. I'm so grateful they have healthy nutritious home cooked meals for lunch too. The Librarian is fantastic she runs lunch time book club and really teaches the children to have a love for reading. The staff over all are very devoted, hard working and love the children. I more than get my money's worth out of the education. I couldn't imagine sending them anywhere else. The goal is to produce well rounded, educated, analytical young adults with a solid sense of identity as a Jew and knowledge about world events and sending my children to Tucson Hebrew Academy is helping me achieve that goal.

Perfection in search.

Pros: In a word, everything!

Cons: There are no disadvantages to Google (and it does save history now).

Review: Google is uncluttered and the new "Google Preferred Sites" feature accessible at http://www.google.com/experimental makes it very customizable. The layout is very organized and logical, especially when it comes to quickly finding out whether or not a result is relevant. The multimedia results, along with news, combine in a logical manner as well.

over-rated, feeds off its name recognition

Pros: good searches

Cons: may turn into another monopoly like microsoft

Review: While I used google myself, I am worried it is going to turn into another monopoly like microsoft. I try to use other search engines for things google is not great at like images (yahoo), articles (looksmart), etc. also I find many websites have figured out google's algorithm and try to increase their rankings deceptively by adding blind links, words or pages.

Once it helped all users, now it uses us to make money.

Pros: Still the most complete

Cons: Gets harder and harder to get the results you want

Review: I used to love Google - when it was a search engine only. No junk. I still like the news feature, and the ease of inter-site searches. But now Corporate America has got its claws into the show - and the results you really want might be on page 2... Page 1 is filled with stuff that Google and its advertisers want you to read.

I scream for Google!

Pros: No ads, esay to use

Cons: none at the moment

Review: Google is a great search engine because3 of its simple "get in, get out" style. It is auctually very advanced though. I like how you can search for patents by patent number, packages by tracking number, get stock info by typing the symbol, get direcions by typing in a location, and when its coupled with gmail, you also have the ability to see your email, have a personalized home page and much more. I also like looking at google labs because they always have cool stuff there.

Not bad, it's serves as a back up to Yahoo Search

Pros: It is simple. No ADs.

Cons: Lacks some things that Yahoo offers me.

Review: I've used Yahoo Search for years now. I've tried Goggle, but I haven't seen anything from Goggle to make me switch. I like having the ability to have my search results open up in new windows when I click on the link without right clicking the link. When you searching sometimes you have to hunt for the info within the web page -- using the back button can get cumbersome tyring to get back to the original search page. I haven't seen Goggle give me an option to personalize my experience like other search sites. Now hitting the back button isn't that hard or right clicking a link isn't too bad either. BUT...to give me an option that allows me to circumvent those action shows attention to detail! I'm sticking with Yahoo as primary search and Google as back up. Yahoo and Google are the best on the web from what I've seen.

The Complete Web Search

Pros: Page ranking usually puts most relevant links first.

Cons: doesn't handle some complex searches.

Review: I've tried Alta Vista, Lycos, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, and MSN Search. All good, but Google is best. Of all the search engines, Google Advanced Search is the most elegant and useful tool, particularly good for finding obscure information on the web. Even the paid ad links are usually relevant.

The speed is awsome, even with complex searches.

Too much junk included

Pros: used to be good

Cons: too much unrelated stuff - has fallen behind others

Review: I've swung back away from Google. Their results just aren't as good as they used to be. I think they have bowed a little too much to paid placements and keywords. Also, as one's web uses expand the main search page has become fairly useless - it provides the least amount of information possible and you don't even get great results anymore. I'm going ttrying yahoo and msn for now. Yahoo seems like the best so far...

Pros: Google has searching the web, images, froogle, maps, local, Google news, and Google Desktop Search. Google tops them all.

Cons: Only that I didn't buy any stock in the IPO

Its an advertising engine reliant on keywords!!

Pros: Great for finding popular sites

Cons: Useless for finding unpopular sources or rich media content

Review: This is the world's best engine for finding Internet sources where the source:

·is popular
·is text
·contains the ‘keyword’ the user is using to search
·and can be found using Boolean skills
·within 10% of the net (8 billion pages) it indexes

Its absolutely useless for finding:

·unpopular sources (how often do you look beyond the second page?);
·sources which don’t contain any of the keywords;
·sources as rich media, sound and video (with no meta tags);
·real time rich media, sound and video;
·sources in the remaining 90% of the net

I Also Like Vivisimo Much Better

Pros: Vivisimo searches a wide variety of engines with one click

Cons: I feel Vivisimo still does not get as much out of Goolgle as I want

Review: For some reason I'm forced to go to Google sometimes because Vivisimo does not get as much as I want from Google. However, for a full flavor of what's out there, I rather go to Vivisimo before Google commerzialized content. Vivisimo is much cleanner, less pay per click, less forced placings, less paid advertising and goes into multiple search engines for a more expeditious and complette search.

Pros: Best search out there

Cons: sometimes more than you want or can digest

Review: Google is still the best search engine out there. It does it's job well, with minimal fuss. You know that advertisers are ONLY on the right side bar; very valuable to know that search ratings are not driven by $.

Others are doing well, but none match google. (I use Yahoo.com, refdesk.com, etc. for other searching, but google is still the best pure search engine.)

Incredibly slow day at CNET I see...

Pros: Yep, Google is fast and comprehensive...

Cons: A little too comprehensive...can you say data mining?

Review: CNET is kidding right? With all the new products coming out and all the news, CNET chooses to review something like Google? Better yet, CNET actually PAID someone to review Google? What's next CNET? The entire Internet?

How about this CNET...why don't you finish all of the product reviews you haven't got to yet, and then if you are again so absolutely bored in your lives, you can continue to post pointless articles. Is it jsut me, or has CNET posted some of the WORST articles ever in the last few months?

Searches webpages ... limited extra gunk on home page, privacy concerns

Pros: Excellent interface with additional services and programs that are well designed and free

Cons: Significant privacy concerns, every thing is in "beta", ads can be annoying

Review: Like modern cell phones google has taken a very good product, made it widely available for next to nothing/actually free, and continues to improve (okay, so it's better than your average cell phone company in this respect).

However, like cell phone companies google has begun adding features outside its original function (searching the ever widening web) raising some concerns.

Some additions are great, their photo editing/storing program is simple and free (Piscsa), but others present privacy and secuirty concerns that are often inflated by fearful masses and rightfully concern experts.

Overall, keep it as your home page, use it to search and even use it for a simple, clear, free email service. Just remember that nothing in life is free, let's just hope the cost of google (basically ads on more and more pages) remains small and does not infring on the privacy rights of users.
