Back in July 2002, Listen.com's Rhapsody inked deals with all five major record labels and more than 100 indies, beating the labels' own music services, MusicNet and Pressplay (subsequently absorbed by Napster), to the punch by several months. Fast-forward a couple of years, and Rhapsody is now owned by RealNetworks, and it's still going strong. It has continued to expand its catalog, with music from more than 500 independent labels, and it remains the best provider of streaming audio. What's more, Rhapsody is the only on-demand streaming music service that offers integration with several digital media receivers to stream music over a network to your home stereo. Now, RealNetworks has taken Rhapsody to an entirely new level with its launch of three variants, the most newsworthy being Rhapsody To Go, which allows you to untether your subscription-based downloads and listen to them on compatible portable devices. Rhapsody To Go costs $14.99 a month, while Rhapsody Unlimited, which gives you unlimited streams and downloads--but no transfers--to portable devices, is available for $9.99 per month. The final choice is Rhapsody 25, a redesigned iTunes-like jukebox application that features 25 online radio stations and 25 on-demand streams per month, all for free. Considering the popularity of Rhapsody, the revamped service will likely make a huge impact on the digital audio world, as it is no longer so streaming-centric. In fact, the service is much more dynamic and will, no doubt, attract newbies, while still appeal even more to existing Rhapsody users. With a 7.93MB download, Rhapsody's installation takes a little longer than the previous version's, but the program comes full of more features and is ultimately a joy to use. You also aren't bombarded with the check boxes and the offers that are typical of a Real install. The updated controls look even more futuristic and streamlined, and they're easy to navigate. From glowing buttons to well-placed windows and tabs, the interface rivals iTunes' for simplicity and aesthetics. You search Rhapsody's library of music using the large browser window, which features a Flash-enabled rotating promo for albums, playlists, and staff picks. All tracks have Play and Buy options in the basic version, while the subscription versions substitute an Add To Library icon for the Buy option. Play a song, and it appears in your current playlist in the lower left. You can save and organize playlists to listen to your favorite songs in whatever sequence you wish, whenever you're connected. The new Mixer lives in the playlist window lives and includes tabs for Burn and Transfer, a new component that's key to Rhapsody To Go.

The revamped interface has more features but is just as clean as its predecessor. Notice the updated Mixer tabbed window.

Stereo controls, song progress, and artist information (including album art) are displayed cleanly along the top of the application. Rhapsody packs curious factoids about artists, so it's fun and addictive to browse. Rhapsody includes links to artists' official Web sites and suggests related performers that might match what you enjoy. It even includes song information on albums that it doesn't carry--a truly useful resource.

We love the simple player control with automatically updated artist factoids.

In the midleft window, you'll find the main options: the Rhapsody Music Guide (default), Rhapsody Radio, My Library, and My Playlists, plus any portable attached devices. The browser includes a simple but effective search box with the option to search by keyword. In the Rhapsody Music Guide, you'll get links to features, 19 genres, a host of charts, and celebrity picks. You can also create My Rhapsody, your own music home page, which gets populated with music matching your tastes (more in Features). The My Library window is equally attractive and efficient, with a responsive search and a useful column dubbed Rhapsody Type, which can sort by imported, purchased, and subscription music.

The Music Library is iTunes-esque in simplicity but packs more options and info.

Another big plus: Rhapsody is the only on-demand streaming service that offers seamless, off-the-shelf integration with digital media receivers, such as Rockford's Omnifi DMS1, Prismiq's MediaPlayer, Netgear's MP101, and Linksys's WMLS11B. With one of the aforementioned digital media receivers, you can navigate and stream Rhapsody's full content catalog over a wireless network connection to your home stereo, or you can use the excellent Sonos Digital Music System, which even lets you play different songs in different rooms at the same time. The only caveat is that your PC has to be on and running the Rhapsody application.

Those who choose Rhapsody 25 can download the application for free (with a valid e-mail address) and get access to 25 excellent ad-free radio streams and 25 on-demand streams per month. Basically, as with a jukebox but for free, you can listen to 25 songs from the vast Rhapsody catalog--not a bad deal. In addition, the basic program adds jukebox functionality, such as MP3/AAC ripping up to 320Kbps, WMA ripping up to 192Kbps, CD burning, and a well-organized music library designed to simplify the tasks of managing music and transferring tunes to an MP3 player. You can also purchase tracks for 99 cents each or albums for $9.99. A really nifty feature: You can send your created playlists to friends. If they download Rhapsody 25, they can hear all the songs in the playlist, in their entirety, free of charge. Essentially, you can make one 25-song mix every month, and nobody has to pay.

True to its name, Rhapsody 25 gives you 25 free streams per month--not bad for a free jukebox application.

Pony up the $9.99 per month for Rhapsody Unlimited, and you'll get unlimited streaming and download access to one of the industry's largest catalogs of albums, insightful background on your favorite artists, 128Kbps WMA streaming, 160Kbps WMA downloads, and access to many top-notch radio stations. One gripe about the radio: While you can skip past songs you don't like, you can't pause in the middle of a track; Napster, on the other hand, allows this. To date, Rhapsody's catalog contains more than 1 million songs. If that seems overwhelming to you, try the program's radio station creation tool, which customizes a station based on up to 10 artists of your choosing.

For the subscription service, you can either stream or add music to your library. If you wish to do so, you can purchase a track by right-clicking the track in the library.

If you have a compatible portable device such as iRiver's H320, Creative's Zen Micro, or Dell's DJ-20, you'll want to investigate Rhapsody To Go. Following on the heels of Napster To Go's revolutionary Janus-based service, Rhapsody To Go gives you access to 100 percent of the downloadable catalog to transfer to your device. A clock built into compatible devices times out licenses for songs when the subscription runs out, but until then, these files can be played with aplomb. While you can populate your playlists with any track in your library, you can autosync when you connect your device with only purchased or imported tracks, not subscription-based downloads. In other words, subscription content must be manually transferred, so you can't automatically fill your 20GB player with random tracks from the Rhapsody catalog. Though we're picky about music, it'd be nice to have a one-click subscription fill-up on our portables.

Tons of players are compatible with Rhapsody, but only a select few (such as the Creative Zen PMC) currently work with Rhapsody To Go.

New Rhapsody features
Since both subscription services allow on-demand streaming of any track available, most users won't need to purchase tracks, but studies have shown that subscribers still buy their favorite tracks. Subscribers have the option to buy tracks with a 10 percent discount. That's 89 cents per track or $8.99 per album. Purchased tracks are 192Kbps AAC files wrapped in Real's Helix DRM.

Additional features of the new Rhapsody include:

  • My Rhapsody: This area is a customized glimpse at the music you're most likely to want at any given time. It gives you personalized selections and charts based on the tracks you've streamed, downloaded, or even imported and played from an MP3 collection acquired elsewhere. It lets you follow genres and subgenres (then alerts you to most popular, newest, and just added tracks) and create an instant 25-song playlist from titles, based on the last 100 tunes you've played. The same mechanism recommends albums for you, based on an automated algorithm as well as Rhapsody's excellent editorial content.

  • James Kim's customized My Rhapsody page.

  • Playlist Central: Here, you'll find playlists put together by Rhapsody editors, celebrities, and other users. They'll shuffle based on how other users rate them--a playlist you publish on there could take off and turn you into the next big tastemaker. There are also playlists for specific themes, such as a dinner party or an intense workout. You can browse from any playlist to the artist page, which makes these a great way to find new music. Using an e-mail client that's embedded within the program, you can also send a playlist to anyone; the recipient can get Rhapsody 25 for free and hear the playlist in its entirety. While we think Playlist Central and Instant Playlist rule, we've become accustomed to traditional "smart" playlists for latest tracks added and top-rated tracks, and we noticed their absence.
  • Extras: Parental controls, more/bigger images, and 1,500 music videos.
System requirements aren't intimidating (Pentium II 350MHz equivalent or better, 64MB of RAM, 380MB available disk space), but Rhapsody works with only PCs running Windows XP, Me, 2000, or 98 SE, and you must have Microsoft IE 5.5 or later, as well as a broadband connection, speakers, and a sound card. You should have a CD burner too. Rhapsody is predictably responsive over an office LAN; in our tests, songs started playing almost as quickly as if they were stored locally. In comparison, when we used Napster 2.0, streaming playback typically took several more seconds to begin.

So how did we fare with Rhapsody To Go? Rhapsody went with the same drag-and-drop method as Napster, though it doesn't have a completely separate window for your device. Instead, a tabbed window in the lower-left corner serves to hold your tracks to play, burn, or transfer. Also unlike Napster, Rhapsody doesn't let you drag tracks, albums, or playlists into the window once you've begun a transfer; you have to wait until the current list has finished.

The Transfer window shows the status of the tracks currently being synced to your device.

After an intial bout with bugginess and transfer failures to compatible portable devices such as the Creative Zen PMC, the Creative Zen Micro, and the iRiver H10, we were finally able to transfer subscription-based tracks to our H10 with no hitches. Presumably, Real engineers were working "real" diligently to get the feature to work postlaunch. A transfer of 100MB worth of tracks (a smooth blend of Mariah Carey and the Postal Service) took just less than four minutes or a rather slow 0.4MB per second over the USB 2.0-enabled H10. Our final comment: in this early stage of Rhapsody 3.0's life, we've had some difficulty logging onto the service, which is probably attributable to high server traffic and growing pains.

Links to service and support are easily available from the help option in either online or offline versions. A quick hop to a Web page, and you have access to a FAQ, including a What's New in Rhapsody 3.0 link and a customer service box that takes you to important functions such as canceling your account. Clicking the search link brings you to a more detailed and all-encompassing searchable FAQ. The latest post addresses the different Rhapsody 3.0 subscriptions.

Customer support is solid.

The only way to contact Real is via an e-mail form that allows you to attach documents. Real will get back to you in 1 to 2 business days. The program won't automatically update to the new version, but there is a link to do this manually. Menu options to authorize a computer or to import music to your library are few and far between, but they offer just the information or function you need. For example, the account summary page lists the number of artists, albums, and tracks available to the user, and there is a useful blogging feature in Preferences.

Streaming technology has always been the heart of Rhapsody. Now that it has incorporated downloading as well, Rhapsody has become a complete music service with full jukebox capabilities, compatibility with portable devices, and an intelligent three-tier service. RealNetworks has managed to combine some of the features of its competitors (for example, basic jukebox functionality as with Napster) and introduced them to a brand that has a loyal following, thanks to a large and diverse music catalog, a simple yet full-featured interface, proven streaming technology, and top-rate editorial content. While we had a couple of early glitches, overall the program is a nice improvement to the now-classic (but in need of an update) Rhapsody.

Don 't get it. Period.

Pros: Nothing, at all.

Cons: Customer service is apparently located in India, and they have no idea how to deal with common problems with the service. In other words, they are useless.

Review: Plain and simple - it's a ripoff. They charge you monthly for a service that they provide - and they don't even understand how it works themselves! That song you 'purchased' won't be available to you next month, or if you go 1 day past hooking up your mp3 player.

It's the biggest technology joke ever in my opinion.

Not bad, not bad...

Pros: Excellent variety of music; over 5 million songs
To-Go Option is very nice, and at a great price
Downloads are good-quality

Cons: Somewhat buggy
Often freezes on Vista 32 while transferring files to player (Creative ZEN)

Review: As one who does not want an iPod because the restrictions on music downloads, Rhapsody gives me exactly what I want. It is compatible with most brand-name MP3 Players, and it satisfies my thirst for music.

Poorly-written interface

Pros: I'm sitting here, trying to think of them...ok album art is nicely displayed and artist information is mostly provided.

Cons: Rhapsody, after three years of constant user comments, STILL doesn't auto-sync with Rhapsody-To-Go enabled players. EXTREMELY limited playlists in Rhapsody Channels, Syncing with Rhapsody-To-Go requires you to click on each channel, Sync takes 4ever

Review: You would think that after THREE YEARS of user complaints about the lack of auto-sync, that Rhapsody would get a clue and fix the problem, but after reading the earliest comments on THIS page, they are either clueless or incapable of writing the code to auto-sync channels for Rhapsody-To-Go. I have had up to 30 channels to sync with my Insignia Pilot 8GB player and had to click on all 30 ONE-AT-A-TIME! If you click on them all, one fter another, the interface goes postal and screws up you player. I had to remove my battery to do a hard-reset to get it working again. On top of all that, I get the same artists and tracks again, and again, and again, and again. It is worse than a tight-rotation Adult Contemporary/Top 40 radio station (and Sirrius for that matter). Access to OVER A MILLION SONGS? But in reality, they program your channels poorly. Even when given the option to create your own custom channel, you are only given 9 artists to list...and the same music is reloaded time after time.
The music isn't sorted, and you are not given the option to sort by last updated, channel name, etc.
You aren't given the option to load high-quality WMA Lossless tracks.
You aren't given the option to ban styles within genres, ie banning vocals from Baroque, rap artists from world music, ALL Elvis tracks. The program doesn't "remember" your dislikes and still loads the artists after you ban their titles.
You aren't given the option to load single artists. "Beatles Radio" includes other artists which you may not like. They don't offer channels exclusive to the artist you WANT to hear. The "Billie Holiday Channel" includes Sarah Vaughn, Howling Wolf, BB Kink, et al. Why not the artist I want and ONLY them?
Your Channel may show "350 MB" and 3.5 hours of playing time...but I went through my list and only found a half-hour to 45 min of music.
IT TAKES FOREVER TO SYNC YOUR PLAYER TO THE SERVICE...EVEN WITH A USB 2.0 CONNECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!
No status bar is given when the service is deleting files from your player.
The video sync doesn't warn you that their service isn't compatable with your player. I spent an hour waiting for Rhapsody to transcode and it never happened. A popup should have told me that their service isn't compatable with my player and stopped the attempt immediately.
Results for artist search are not alphabetized.
There is a limited number of genres offered. They are merely re-packaged into different channels to give the illusion of a broad offering. There is no Classical Indian music, no Russian or Jpop.
Rhapsody doesn't remember your likes or dislikes and doesn't enable you to ban genres. I am not a Christian but I was offered 7 different Christian artists in "What;s New" instead of enabling me to ban that genre and offer me something based upon music which I indicate I like. I can only name 9 genres that I like and none to ban.
When listening to your portable player (and on the Rhapsody dashboard fo that matter) you can't ban an artist.
Music is supposed to be stored locally to expedite updating my player. This isn't happening. It takes WELL over an hour to update 5-6 GB on my portable device as opposed to a minute to update 4 GB on my SDHC card.

Does a poor job at correcting ID3 tags in your library.

I'm more satisfied with using Replay Music from Appllian and ripping songs from imeem and having them tagged by Gracenote. Takes me a few seconds to load the library into WMP 11 and then sync to my SDHC card...and WMP 11 will load fresh tracks each time I connect...just what Rhapsody DOESN'T do.

I have posted these comments to the Rhapsody support forum but from seeing the same comments posted here, I don't think they care.

Wow Worst Service ever

Pros: They didn't Charge my credit card for the 14 day trial pheww

Cons: Where do I start?

Review: Ok so i've been using napster for quite some time and kinda was looking into rhapsody just because of the verizon commercials and the player looked alot better then the napster one. So intially I signed up and when doing so there website errored out on my 3 times after submitting my credit information saying something in regards to technical difficulties. Anyways I finally got signed up. I signed into my account and clicked the remeber me checkbox which never works on there website. I go to downloadthe rhapsody software and the link just hangs there waiding for download.listen.com and never actually responds. So I do the usual and get out of firefox and try internet explorer.. Wow same thing. hmmm I tried for 2 hours untill I got so frustrated and read everything on there website about download trouble. I actually thought about re-installing my computer because of this but I didn't have any other trouble downloading for any other websites. So recently Google chrome came out well I thought I would give that a try (and I was interested in testing it out anyways) same thing. At this point I left it be for about 8 hours and that night I tried again. Same thing execpt I just kept clicking the link and cancel and click again untill it actually got a response from there download server. I got it to work 4 times but the transfer rate started at 130kb sec and slowly decresed with an estimated download time of 8 days lol. So I figured i would try this process again and maybe get a better transfer rate. after 30 trys at getting the server to respond it worked again with the same outcome 130kb sec and then throtteled down to nothing. I contacted customer service via email because its the only way of course lol. I asked them to please send the the file via email attachment and explained the issue in detail. After 18 hours my response was a "i'm Sorry you are having trouble" and please follow the below links to download the software. One link lead me to the same web page in the my account section to download the software that I had been trying the previous day, then the next link lead me to the how to section if having trouble downloading the software which I already went through and we all know those are worthless and never cure anything anyways. So anyways I then had the call in to cancel my service which I still can't figure out why a company would do that besides trying to hope that people are lazy and won't sit on the phone for 20 mins to cancel there membership and i'm sure it works because how annoying only to have someone sit there and want to transfer you all over the place to tech support and then hopefully lose you in the process and then having to call back again and wait another 20mins if not longer to cancel membership. It would have been easier just to dispute my charge with my credit card company once it went through lol. I can say one thing I will never do buisness with Real.com again. There buisness tactics are disturbed.

A rip off!!! They say for $14.99 you can download all the MP3s you want. But you CANNOT! They CHARGE

Pros: NOTHING, it's a rip off!

Cons: They charge you monthly and for every frigging song.

Review: No wonder people trade mp3 for free when companies like this continue to rip people off saying for $14.99 you can download as many MP3s as you want. YOU CAN'T. IT ONLY GOES TO YOUR MP3 PLAYER AND THEN EXPIRES AFTER 30 DAYS. You have to buy each song. Another con job.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON RHAPSODY

Pros: IS OFF MY HARD DRIVE

Cons: BLOATED.SLOW.RIP OFF. FEW MP3

Review: I like to own the music I pay for. Rhapsody + a Sansa...NIGHTMARE...
I like many people just want MP3 or other USABLE format. I don't want to feel hijacked by file types and DRM. I WANT TO PAY FOR MY MUSIC AND HAVE CONTROL OVER WHERE WHEN I PLAY IT. Rhapsody gives you RAX or WMA (DRM)....few
mp3 songs available. I now use EMUSIC and am terribly happy ..being able to straight up download mp3 format. NO SUBSCRIPTION FILES....that's bS.

Decent Service, Cust support sucks

Pros: High quality user experience.

Cons: India Customer Support

Review: I used the service for a while and liked it, but found that I wasn't using it enough to justify the cost. When I went to cancel, there was no online way to cancel. The only option was an 800 number to India. The cust support rep kept trying to make me go through a survey that I didn't want to do. Ugh.

Livid!!!!!!

Pros: Not a bad selection of music

Cons: Horrible service/support. An absolute nightmare

Review: First off all their first level support is in India, no offence but each time I have called their support I have been on the phone for over an hour each time. Being placed on hold several times because they are unsure of anything. Their Level 2 support, which is here in the United States and they are just as bad.

I went to their online store, purchased their MP3 player because it said I could download the Rhapsody channels on it "Only reason I bought it". Get this, I got the product to get the Rhapsody channels and it wouldn't work. I then went online and used their chat support since their customer service center was closed. I let the person I was talking to know the issue, after giving me nonsensical information that had nothing to do with my issue, he finally gets it... Then says the Sansa e250 model does not support Rhapsody channels. I then asked him why? This is what I purchased on your online store, and it said it would work. He then totally shuts me off and says; call customer service tomorrow to help you with this. OMG!!! I called their support the next day, I was on the phone for over an hour, got transferred around numerous time, finally they got me to their level 2 support. The person I spoke with fairly nice he apologized for the inconvenience and said he will send a return-shipping label and re-ship the correct device. A week later no mailing label, so I call them again. Asked to speak with their supervisor, who knew nothing and placed me on hold more times then I can remember, then goes, uh I don't know what is going on I will transfer you to level 2. At this point I was upset but not livid. The person I spoke with a week ago, e-mailed the return shipping label, but oh guess what! No shipping label attachment.... Ok, this guy also apologized, gave me a free month of service, that I had to ask for. I shipped back the MP3, 2 two weeks later nothing, I called them again. They say, we don't see that they received the shipment back. Now I am looking directly at what UPS sent me, date, time, location it was delivered to and who signed for it. I had to provide them all the information, they had no records un freaking believable.... They then shipped the MP3 to my billing address rather then the initial shipping address I had provided, luckily my office was able to sign for it and hold the package for me. I was like finally I don't have to call Rhapsody for anything. Boy was I wrong, when I opened the package I was furious, they sent me the same model again, the one that did not support rhapsody channels. "UNBELIEVABLE", I called their support line, asked to speak with their level 2 support. I spoke with a gentleman, told him my issue, he placed me on hold for almost 10 minutes, came back with this answer "We no longer sell the model you have". Uh, that's all good and well, I don't care, why then did you send it to me when I am supposed to have the e250r and not the e250? So he placed me on hold for another 8 minutes, came back on the line and repeated the same thing, "I have been told that we no longer sell that model". He then offers to transfer me to tech support, I asked him what for? They would tell me the same thing, this model of MP3 player e250 does not support their Rhapsody channels. I don't want another MP3 player, I already have a media player and the only reason I am purchasing this from Rhapsody was because of the Rhapsody channels. I was livid at this point; I knew I was past civility. I told him to send me a return shipping label and that I want them to credit my CC. I did not want their MP3 player, they could keep it. This is by far the "WORST" service I have ever had from an online store. They don't care about their customers, the product is not bad and by that I mean Rhapsody music. However "BEWARE" of their service, I was so close to also just canceling my Rhapsody service because of the idiotic support they have. I would really never recommend this service to any one just based on how horrid their support is.

Constantly failing

Pros: Great music selection, easy format to search and store music. Renting music is ideal over purchasing songs.

Cons: Each month you have to download a new track to your mp3 player to confirm your active subscription in order to play music. The problem is, it never works, requiring tech-help.

Review: The problem with renting music is frequent "synchs". But that would be tolerable if it worked. However most of the time it won't work, requiring a phone call to tech support...this is in India I believe, and it takes no less than 1-2 hours to go through this process. They change something in the license each time, but it never lasts long. In 12 months, I have had it fail at least 6 times, and spent countless hours on the prolonged tech support with an almost insurmountable language barrier. For that reason this service is unacceptable.

Needs improvement

Pros: Huge music selection, Customizable playlists, fair price

Cons: Only works in MS Windows. Program crashes frequently. I had to re-download music fairly often because the licenses expire and no longer plays.

Review: Customer support was great. Too bad I needed them so often.

Rhapsody-to-go is a good value!

Pros: Load up your compatible player and hit the road, get bored and do it again.

Cons: DRM sucks in any guise...

Review: For $15 per month, you get access to a big swath of music -- enough that you can quickly download stuff like the complete new Wilco, or that weird new Peter Gabriel single, or even Don Ho singing "Shock The Monkey" (he makes me long for Shatner's version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds").

The Rhapsody software you need to do the transfers is slower than MusicMatch and it's not exactly intuitive like iTunes, but it worked fine with my iRiver H10. It won't work with my new Sony NW-S706F walkman -- because Sony's only supporting ATRAC for DRM music...

But all in all, this $15/month will save me a lot more in avoiding CD purchases and downloads I never play again... Get it!

Be Careful of 14 day free trial

Pros: Selections and listening to whole songs

Cons: Customer Service over seas

Review: I just recieved a new computer and I wanted to download music. I had Rhapsody in 2006, but I didn"t have the disc any longer, so I did a trial membership again for 14 days. I went through all the steps for signing up and wanted monthly billing. When everything was finalized on the 14 day free trial and I checked my statement on my credit card. I had a quarterly payment to Rhapsody for $34.99

I thought I had 14 days to make a decision to cancel, but they already charged my credit card. I called the cancellation departmet and asked why I was charged the quarterly amount on a 14 day free trial. I had to go through the worst customer service experience in my life. I was on the phone with people trying and acting if the spoke English, but in reality the were Indian. And they try to give me the run around.

It is a nightmare even dealing with Rhapsody. No one speaks English and the customer service is a mess. Its a waste of time and also a waste of money.

Dont give this company a penny

Pros: Worst customer support

Cons: Lying thieves.

Review: Got the a trial with the purchase of my daughters MP3 player. Cancelled it in February since really didnt need the service and couldnt warrant spending 15 bucks a month for a song or two. Found out today, in May, that even though we cancelled it in February they have been charging us since then and caused my GFs bank account (Rarely use it only for certain things) had been overdrafted. Call them and took me 40 minutes to get the idiots to finally cancel the account. We were told on the phone when we called to cancel that they were going to give us a month free to keep trying it but after that it would be cancelled. Check the email and it says that in order to cancel after the month we had to call back. That wasn't what we were told on the phone so we didnt bother to worry about it. Calling thier main office tomorrow to raise hell.

Don't buy it

Pros: A wide variety of music

Cons: Ridiculously buggy. Poor rights management. Slow

Review: This is a good idea that falls completely apart when you actually try to use it. Downloads don't work. Purchases you make won't burn. Authorizations get duplicated or corrupted. I could go on and on. It's easier just to buy the music. Pass on Rhapsody and find something that works.

Pros: Havent found any

Cons: Have been trying to cancel for 4 months now and they keep attempting to charge our CC.

Review: They need to hire customer support reps which can UNDERSTAND & speak English fluently. I asked to speak with a supervisor, which spoke worse English than the CS Rep.

Great-As in Capital great...The best thing for music lovers

Pros: Excellent selection of songs, Excellent Customer service

Cons: Having a few problems since my install of IE7

Review: I started on Rhapsody when it began after having problems with the Musicmatch Jukebox service (at that time). Customer Service Grade: A. User Interface Grade A- Selection Grade: A+. Maybe I'm being too generous but since I moved 3 time's, switched carriers for my broadband 4 times, canceled Rhapsody when and during the time I didn't have a connection. ZERO problems with customer service. Where is the first place I head back too when I get back on the Internet: Rhapsody. Why: I love music and for less then the price of a CD I have a world of songs that I never heard before along with the music I already like.

Content and customer service make or break a service as far as I'm concerned and all software has some bugs. Rhapsody has done an excellent job in fixing the bugs along the way and the newest one, which may or may not be related to Internet Explorer 7.0 I'm sure will be fixed. The problem relates to logging on and they already have a user fix posted, this works but does repeat so I'm sure that at some point in near future it will be fixed.

Since I've been with them since their launch they haven't failed in upgrades to fix any bugs so I'm very confident that this one will be resolved shortly.

If this is the future of music/on-line services then the outlook looks very bright. I wish I could say that of all service providers but unfortunately that is not the case.

Updated 4.0 service is dismal. Unless you hear otherwise, find something else, or just buy CD's.

Pros: Great selection of tracks. Good for songs you'd never purchase otherwise.

Cons: Innumerable failures to transfer tracks. Horrendous "upgrade" from 3.0 to 4.0, with loss of several intuitive features.

Review: I used to really like Rhapsody in its 3.0 stages. In fact I was a pretty good advocate of the service, though I was honest about its shortcomings which might mean problems with transferring tracks and strange failures to authorize content you'd downloaded previously when recommending it to friends. But whew! Now with the most recent update to Rhapsody 4.0, I firmly say: stay away! Everything that was right about Rhapsody's 3.0 software especially the intuitive drag and drop mixer was nixed by some sadistic GUI designer who thought that efficiency means more mouse clicks to get a job done. Now you have to switch back and forth between your library and you're Now Playing list to see tracks you've added to a temporary "playlist". That and the fact that there is a loss of functionality of a BACK BUTTON in the Music Guide, yes thats right folks, the BACK BUTTON, the staple of every web browser since the World Wide Web came to the masses, doesn't work properly in the Music Guide. It has to be a sick joke, surely, when I get to the level of an artist's album I should be able to hit the BACK BUTTON to see all the other albums they have produced. But no! I'm forced to return to the root of the Music Guide and re-search for that artist and look at the listing of their albums to see what else I might want to listen to. Maybe it is just me, but it happens on my 3 year old desktop as well as my 4 day old laptop, so something tells me its a software problem, not a hardware issue.

Bottom Line: Caveat Emptor!!!

Pros: excellent sound quality, excellent support

Cons: expensive downloads.... but I only listen to radio

Review: I get rhapsody free from comcast, the choices are more than anyone can ask for and the radio is just amazing. I never liked RealMedia especially Realplayer, but Rhapsody is great.

Excellent selections, but tech support sucks

Pros: Musical Selection

Cons: Technical Support

Review: I worked with tech support on a fairly minor issue by email for almost two months. After may unsuccessful attempts I called them on the phone. Phone support gave me a set of instructions which caused my player to become unusable. It's empty now after reformatting it per their directions and nothing will transfer to it. Up until two days ago I was enjoying it immensely. Now I'm ready to strangle them.

The best subsciption service I have used!!! ( I have tried all the biggest ones)

Pros: Fast downloads, easy interface, great band pages, same music as everyone else

Cons: Naming of bands example: kinks, the or the kinks. IT uses them both after you have downloaded them, but when you get to thier page all the albums are there it isn't a big deal

Review: I have used all the subscription services: Napster, Yahoo, Virgin, Urge, and now Rhapsody. Napster was good but I did not like the interface a lot. Yahoo has a lot of great things: podcasts, ect..., but issues with trasnfering though I was with them for over a year. Virgin did not work well for me and the interface was not even close to the others for me. Urge is a gret looking system and may become the best, I just had major problems getting it to work for me. It would not open up half the time and froze the other half of the time.

All in All Rhapsody is a great program, similar to Napster in my opinion but better. It is easy to use and I have had zero issues saving the songs and transferring them. And the songs have actually "played for sure". One thing that I really like is the little notes they give you while the song is playing. Notes about the band, album and bands that were influenced by them. It gets 9/10 because of this slight annoyance of how when I download albums by a band the albums will go in my library under different band names names. Like "the kinks" and "kinks, the" it is not a big deal you can easily change the names to put them all under the same band name, but that is a slight. The program is not perfect, but for the "to go" addicted this program does it right now.

Exceptional value

Pros: Chice and selection of music is unlimited

Cons: I wish I could get it on my radio.

Review: I pay quarterly and use the program consistantly. Everyone in the family gets to set their own preferences. My favorite feature is the ability to structure your own radio stations around your favorite performers. The people who rate Rhapsody badly probably work for the competition.

Quirky at times, but definitely worth it

Pros: An incredible library of at-your-fingertips music

Cons: Minor bugs and "To Go" not compatible with many devices on the market

Review: Despite the minor bugs and compatibility issues with some mp3 devices, Rhapsody is wonderful. I have a "To Go" subscription, so I've quickly filled up my SanDisk mp3 player with subscription tunes. I also have a DLink MediaLounge so I can stream music from Rhapsody wirelessly to my home stereo. Music services are nice, but if you're like me, you'd rather not have to sit in front of the computer to enjoy it.

For those not familiar with music services like Rhapsody, you do not have to purchase individual tracks. Nor do you need to wait for an entire track to download before it begins playing. A broadband connection is a must. The sound is near CD quality, so no tinny compressed audio. It's literally like having an entire record store worth of CDs ready for you to enjoy.

A word of advice -- if you're in the market for an mp3 player and are thinking of using Rhapsody To Go, make sure you look at the compatibility list on Rhapsody's site. Many devices do not support subscription songs, so do your homework before purchasing.

Bottom line: Instead of paying $15 each month for 1 cd, you can get access to a huge variety of music on Rhapsody.

Rhapsody bites; can I go lower than 1?

Pros: Great misleading webpages

Cons: Misleading product, crappy billing practices

Review: Back in 2005, I searching for a Charles Asnavour song. Rhapsody led me to believe they had the song, but I couldn't really tell until I got my "Free" subscription. Of course they didn't really have the song. Just a listing possible songs they may get. When I tried to cancel, I had to call a customer service rep and cancel. She gave me the free one month extention. Within a couple of days i logged into to cancel. BIg mistake on my part was not checking my checking account the 9.99 that was stolen from me for five months. Whe n I reported this issue, the guy from India said that he could only refund me for April. He kept trying to get me to say I was satified. Of course I was being recorded, so he then could say he solved my problem. Problem;e I'm out 50 or 60 bucks because of my stupidity and not one downloaded song to show for it.

great....when it works

Pros: good music selection/good library categories

Cons: tech support (which is needed a lot) acts quickly to emails however, it takes days to get problems (a lot of them) corrected

Review: to re-itereate, great when it works. But it doesn't work that often. Tech supports favorite advice is to uninstall and reinstall both Windows Media Player 10 and the Rhapsody Player. Whe that doesn't work then they dig a little deeper. Good luck trying to burn a CD or downloading to a portable device. When you are able to do it you have to re-connect and resynch every few days or the songs on the portable device go dead. You can have up to 3 computers linked to the same Rhapsody account, however everytime they want you to reinstall the Rhapsody player, it tells you that you are no longer authorized to use it. Then you have to email Tech support again to re-authorize your computer. I could go on and on and on.....

Good luck getting any rebates in a timely manner. I purchased a Sandisk M240 which supposedly had an $80 rebate if purchased with a 6 month Rhapsody To Go subscription. I sent in my rebate on December 27, 2005 and as of April 28, 2006 still have not received it. They have a special web site to check your rebate status, and it says still "processing". Rhapsody has not replied to my 2 previous emails regarding the status of my rebates and good luck getting a live human being on the phone. The Sandisk player is a good little player, but after using Rhaspsody for 4 months (or trying to) I don't have anything good to say about this music service. By the way I have a 1 year old Dell 5550 with XP home and have had all kinds of problems with the actual Rhapsody software, burning CDs, and downloading to the Sandisk player. My rating? - 1.

Cons: Either security lapses or managed by sleazeballs

good... but not without drawbacks

Pros: many songs, can access account from any computer on website, nice artist information, top song and top artist lists, awesome radio, constantly updating, nice interface

Cons: MAJOR problem with windows media licensing, no song lyrics, not much music videos, many songs can't be listened to without coughing up an extra dollar... even if you have the "unlimited plan"

Review: The best music service out there, in my opinion. However, there are many problems to be fixed. Having to pay extra for certain songs is an annoyance. Also, it is a pain having to go look up artists just so i can play music from them, since expired licenses prevent me from adding those songs to my library.

This is sweet

Pros: Flat rate per month for a lot of music

Cons: Some albums have songs that aren't available for download

Review: I've been using Rhapsody and Rhapsody To Go for a couple of weeks and have to say that it rules the planet. It's like the old days of Napster, only legal. There are some albums that are available only for purchase. Those seem to be more of a label issue than a Rhapsody issue (Metallica, Linkin Park), but it is also surprising what is available. The software is also excellent and very simple to use. There is one bit of clunkiness to it in that there isn't the capacity to download directly to an MP3 player. It has to be downloaded to your computer and then syncked to your MP3. Other than that it is mostly drag and drop, whether entire artist collection, album, or song.

Rhapsody 3.0 software has been updated and improved.

Pros: Selection of Music is awesome. The price is right. Many helpful features.

Cons: Some tunes can not be downloaded to portable device.

Review: I am addicted to the Rhapsody service too.

Each music service seems to serve a few special music genres better than others. So, it is up to the consumer to discover which best serves his musical taste.

I recently upgraded to the Rhapsody-To-Go service. I couldn't be happier. Most of the tunes I want are still available for download to my portable. It just depends on what music you are interested in. The music that is not for sale on-line can not be downloaded. This is more of a decision by the recording companies then the Rhapsody service. Guess what? If they pull the music off Rhapsody - you probably won't find it on iTunes either. If you see something you can't live without on Rhapsody - there is always the option to purchase the track.

Truly AWESOME

Pros: Works more or less flawlessly

Cons: Missing an artist or two I like.

Review: I've been a Rhapsody unlimited subscriber for about a year, and I've never regretted it. I use it at home and at work, without having to worry about buying and downloading music.

There're a couple of country artists that're missing from their library, but it's not really that big a deal for me.
I LOVE this service.

(Recently, my wife got me an iRiver H10, and I got a subscription to Rhapsody to Go. The interface for that seems a little clunkier... you can only sync things in your 'Library', etc., and I've had a few hiccups with the DRM duration, but all in all that service works very well, too.)

Excellent--Better than the software that came w/ my MP# player

Pros: Simple, Recognizes most MP3 players, large library

Cons: Initial bug due RealPlayer out of date

Review: I've had an I-River MP3 player that I was not using that much because I had trouble downloading songs into it. Rhapsody has made the whole process completely painless. The program recognized my player (which is about 2 years old) right away. Managing it's library is 10 times easier with Rhapsody than with I-River's own software. Purchasing songs, and organizing play-lists are now a piece of cake. I love it. Had a glitch initially. Problem was due to my version of RealPlayer being very old--I had version 2.something, and they are now up to version 10. Tried e-mailing support to figure out problem, but that was no help. Then I noticed phone number. Called them (in India...of course) and helpful girl got me set up. Recommend you open RealPlayer if it's already on your computer and update it before you load Rhapsody.

This is the BEST subscription music service

Pros: Huge selection, great value, sleek - easy-to-use interface, UPNP Server

Cons: Signs you out after 8 hours of streaming and not "interacting" with program, sometimes sluggish response when adding items to playlist, SO MUCH music - can be addicting

Review: I have been a Rhapsody user for almost a year now and have had a very good experience with this program. I have not used the To Go service as of yet (it requires Windows XP - I have 2000).

First off, the selection is outstanding. They have new music added every day and you always have the latest music as soon as it comes out (including editor comments). The Music Guide is well organized and search results are simple to navigate (unlike some other music services).

Secondly, the sound quality is great (including CD burns)! I have Sennheiser HD515 headphones and listen to Rhapsody at least 5 hours a day. The addition of the EQ in version 3.0 is MUCH appreciated.

About 9 months ago, I bought an Omnifi DMS1 Wifi streamer to play music in the living room from this box. The included UPNP server works like a charm. The only caveat is that if you don't interact with your computer for 8 hours (ie overnight), Rhapsody will sign you out - even if you are streaming music to a UPNP box or if music is playing on the machine. I also setup a "Rhapsody network jukebox" as an office music setup, and that works great too. Just have to login every morning and get it logged in. Also, I've occasionally had the UPNP server simply stop. I go to preferences and click Start again, but as soon as I click Ok, it stops again. This can be resolved by restarting Rhapsody.

I highly recommend using Rhapsody with a music streamer as it expands the value of the service even further. You'll have music for every occasion!

Overall, the program is very easy to use. Playlists, Library, and the Music Guide are all intuitive and attractively designed. The 'My Rhapsody' portion of the service shows you new releases and just added music for genres you've selected. There is also an "Artist Alerts" section, where they claim to email you when there is activity for the artists you have selected. I have yet to receive a single email even though there has been activity with artists on my alert list. I've used Napster 3.0 and Yahoo Music Unlimited. This is the easiest to use of the 3 services.

Local media can be imported and played through Rhapsody - It won't tell you if imported tracks are already in the library, so you can end up with some duplicates.

One nice feature is the "mini player" which allows you to quickly navigate to the next song and then hides in the corner or your screen until you move your mouse there. It can also be docked to the top or bottom of the screen, but doesn't provide you with any additional information or controls by doing so (like Napster's does). Rhapsody doesn't work with my Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro's Next/Previous track buttons. There is also no "crossfader" option, but the next track begins buffering before the current song ends, so music play is pretty seamless.

I guess my only other problem with the program is I find myself often asking myself "I could be listening to anything I want - do I really want to be listening to *this* song?". It's like having Borders or Barnes & Noble in your house.

In conclusion, I am very satisfied with Rhapsody's service. The value for the money is excellent, the selection is incredible, and the program is very easy to use. If you are looking for the "celestial jukebox", look no further! This is the best!

Not for Casual, Per Song Buyers

Pros: The free version gives you 25 free plays, decent radio stations. Good for sampling new music

Cons: Poor streaming audio quality (P4 3GHz); Poor compression on downloaded songs; DRM real strict;

Review: I'm not into the To-Go or subscription services, I just like buying individual songs, which means Rhapsody is not for me. My wife puchased a 4 minute song and it downloaded as a 6MB .rax file, you read right 6 freakn' MB. The .rax pretty much forces you to use their software for organizing and transferring any music you buy from them. If I wanted to transfer a purchased track to a portable device, I had to sign into my wife's account. Bottom line, if you're a casual, per song buyer, Rhapsody sucks. Stick with Napster or MSN Music where you can download as .wma.

Pros: Everything I heard but could not try

Cons: Support, or better stated, the LACK thereof.

Review: After reading the cnet review, I was excited to try Rhapsody. No problem downloading but then the fun began. Could not get dmr to work. Could not burn songs. Could not find ANY useful information on the Web or in FAQ's. After HOURS of frustration, I tried to cancel the subscription. Guess what - you have to call to cancel. Waited a good 10 minutes to speak with someone who "offered" up the tech department and two free months if I would retain the subscription. At that point I was too peeved to even consider it. You have to be kidding me - no support, live or otherwise. And, not suprisingly, the first months charge showed up on my credit card - even though I was a "subscriber" for no more than a few hours. Great music service, abysmal support line.

Pros: Great selection, wide variety of music

Cons: Customer support is terrible.

Review: I tried a 14-day Rhapsody Unlimited free trial and I really liked it until I had to cancel it. They gave me a phone number to call to cancel my subscription and I was put on hold for 40 minutes before I actually was able to talk to a guy (who, by the way, I couldn't even understand) who didn't help at all. RealNetworks tries every possible way to keep you as a customer. This guy extended my free trial for 15 more days. Poor technical support, major glitch in updating from 2.1

Pros: When it works it's not bad. I like the download options.

Cons: I don't like the way it organizes playlists and artists.

Review: Rhapsody 2.1 was a nice program and you can still download it!!

Rhapsody 3.0, however leaves alot to be desired.

I have it working on one computer (Win 98) without a problem, so far. However, it just will not update (or work from a download) on the other computer (Win XP). I've tried all the published tech support "answers" to no avail.
Ver. 3.0 does offer nice options to download individual songs to computer, rather than having to burn them to CD (as in the 2.1 version). It has potential. I just wish the developers at Rhapsody would get their act together and fix ver 3.0 (or come up with a new version entirely) so it works on all platforms with no major glitches.

Cons: Limited artist search and genres are inadequate

Review: I tried cancelling the free subscription you have to call an 866 number and be on indefinite hold on hold for over and hour with the most irritating music, then got cut off, right now I am trying the the second time and have been on hold for 40 minutes and no one has answered and it is during there business hours listed for the cancellation number. They make it difficult as possible to unjoin, got charged for monthly subscription the day it said it expires instead oof the next day. They do all this so they have less unsubscribers and is a very shady business practice, why cant you cancel online if it was good enough for you to signup online? I would suggest never using Rhapsody. The music takes forevever to download and each time i restarted the program had to restream each music file.

Pros: Plays music

Cons: You will suffer like never before

Review: This is the worst online service I have ever used. Their tech support department has *NO* phone number, there's no customer service number, and it takes tech support well over a month to respond... I send in about 5 issues.

I paid $14 to burn songs which failed to burn, but I was charged anyway (some DRM issue), and you cannot cancel their service from online. You have to literally call a phone number, from 9 to 5PM, to do it. Then they try like crazy to get you to not cancel this service.

Cons: Apparently transfer is buggy...haven't had a problem yet

Review: I've been using Rhapsody for over a year now and cannot say one bad thing about it! (Although, I wish some labels would release their tracks to on-demand listening...no fault of Rhapsody). As far as the software, it is very seamless. The organization is brilliant...and so simple you would think Google was involved :-P

I've tried Napster. Needless to say, I went back to Rhapsody within an hour. Rhapsody delivers, you won't be disapointed!

Streaming Option is Crack to the Music Fiend, but To-Go Option is Hurting

Pros: Sexy Interface, Seamless Streaming

Cons: Incomplete Streaming Catalog, To Go Selection Full of Holes

Review: This new version of Rhapsody is, as some have suggested, the purest and most addictive of drugs for the audio-addicted. I have been using the streaming option (before and after the recent upgrade) for the past six months and I have it running 14 hours of the day, constantly at home and constantly at work. I have yet to reach the end of the ever expanding catalog and I can hook this up to my home entertainment system to blast all around the house. I go through a rough physical withdrawal if I'm away from the music for more than a day. I've sold all but a small portion of my formerly large cd collection and I don't know what I'd do without this incredible application.
The only problem here is, I don't know what I'd do without this incredible application. As detailed by many other worried reviewers, the danger is that Rhapsody could kill the service at any time and we would be out of luck with zero music in hand. Fortunately, I don't believe this will happen any time in the near future. We can all see that the digital music revolution is coming and there's not much anyone can do about it except get on board and embrace it. I understand the apprehension of other reviewers who insist that by not owning their tunes, they have no ultimate control over them. That said, the past six months "renting" my music has been amazing. Once you give it a try, like me, you'll feel stifled if you ever have to resort back to a cd collection.
Rhapsody does have it's limits, though. As outlined by Eliot Van Buskirk on this site and on mp3.com, none of the subscription services, Rhapsody included, carry the entire catalog of digital music. This means the digital music user that's attempting to keep it legal, such as myself, is left out in the cold on much of the music out there. And Rhapsody's To-Go option is even worse. Initially, I was thrilled when I heard about the new service. I went out and purchased my first mp3 player (Creative Zen Micro) and signed up for the To-Go option. After upgrading the firmware on the portable device, Rhapsody did a fair job of transferring files and the music sounded just fine. That is, the music I was able to transfer. The ridiculous part of the service, which is not advertised, is the number and selection of files one can, or rather cannot, transfer to an mp3 player. Although one can stream a good number of tunes, only about 1/3 or less of each album could actually be transferred to my mp3 player. And guess which songs they allow this for. You got it, only the songs that Rhapsody doesn't believe anyone would want to pay extra to download. This renders the To-Go option absolutely useless. So I cancelled my To-Go subscription within a week of starting it. The good thing is that at least the program was well designed so that my account was not unfairly affected. The monthly subscription was prorated and I only paid for the time I used the service.

Recap: The Rhapsody streaming service is undeniably amazing and addictive. I could not live without it and I don't plan on trying. The Rhapsody To-Go option is completely worthless. Don't waste your time on it.

Way to buggy, even with updates as of 5/31

Pros: Awesome concept

Cons: Disastrous execution. Hard to impossible to unsubscribe.

Review: I have been a huge fan of Rhapsody for years, basically selling the service to every guest to our house for the last two years. I have been eagerly awaiting Rhapsody to go. Only suckers would buy CDs or tracks from Itunes after this service was introduced I was sure. What a huge, huge disappointment.

I purchased the Iriver h10 and rhapsody to go for a year (web deal with $100 rebate). Rather than update my old service (as it said it would), it created two separate accounts with the same password, CC, Login, username, etc. Just getting that sorted with their billing took ages! Had to call billing and tech support (they tried to help me with the bugs too). But that’s not the real problem…

The service is WAY to buggy. After terrible performance I updated the rhapsody software and the Iriver firmware and even then it didn’t work consistently. I could transfer tracks sometimes, but inexplicably not others. Some tracks would show up double, some tracks would play and others would not. There are five second gaps between songs, ten second gaps to fastforward to the next one (this was marginally improved with the latest Iriver firmware). I tried this on two separate laptops both running XP.

Since 3.0 some of the songs are no longer available in full length as they were in 2.1.

The interface is terrible. The window for seeing album names is too small and can’t be made larger. Run a search for an artist with lots of albums (Miles Davis, Beethoven) and you will have no idea what all those albums are unless you open them up.

Rhapsody makes it very hard to separate the tracks that you own with the ones that you are renting. When you decide to add an album to your library, you either have to just add the stream link like in 2.1 or you have to download all albums tracks to your rented library. There should be four options for sorting music: All Music, Rented Music, Music owned on HD, Music bookmarked for streaming. This should be a no-brainer! As it is now you only get chaos in your library

I was so hungry for this to work I spent hours trying to sort out the bugs. Finally I thought I had it all dialed in and then certain tracks would play on the Iriver for a few days and then freeze out. So frustrating.

Finally I decided to give Yahoo’s service a try. Signing up was easy, transferring files was easy. Everything worked the first time. The FIRST time!! And so far all the tracks show in full length (although I’ve only looked at a few albums so far). I don’t like the radio stations as much, but the bottom line is this service at least works. No problems at all with the Iriver and Yahoo. (BTW the Iriver is terrible. The color screen goes dark quickly and you have to wake it up before you can do anything, like advance to the next track, and songs take too long to start once selected, plus to load songs on the device you need a dongle that also connects to the power supply. A dongle! So lame.)

I hated to do it, but I had to unsubscribe from Rhapsody. So I went to the website and even the unsubscribe process was buggy! Unbelievable. I typed in my reasons for unsubscribing and then hit the link and then another, and then ended in a dead end! Tried another route and finally had to type in my reasons again, and then I had to call! On the phone I told them I was going to Yahoo because I could not get the Rhapsody to work. I told them I wanted my money refunded. She told me she had to get approval from her boss. She came back on the line a few minutes later and said they would not refund my money unless I talked with tech support again! What’s that?!! I told her I had already spent hours, hours (!) on this. Too bad, she said. I told her Rhapsody could keep the money, but just cancel my account anyway. I figure they are going to need the money, because with this garbage product and pricing way higher than Yahoos, I can’t see them being around much longer.

Final note: Whatever you do, don’t get a year subscription! Just try it for a month if you must. Also try Yahoo’s (it’s really cheap), and then you can decide for yourself!

Good music selection, but the software sucks.

Pros: Great music selection.

Cons: Lots of luck getting the software to work.

Review: If you have a stock Dell running XP or 2000 Pro, you will probably be OK. If you run W98SE or if you have unusual system components, or if you run sofware like Audible.com that registers content and peripherals, WATCH OUT! This program is a killer. I wasted hours, lost licenses, had to reinstall Windows & hardware. Damn it, I really , really miss Streamwaves.com!!

I am livid!!

Pros: $100 rebate on an iRiver H10 for an annual subscription; compatibility with Roku Soundbridge intriguing

Cons: The download and the customer service

Review: I gave Rhapsody a 1 score purely on the issues I had trying to download the software and the ensuing customer service experience.

I downloaded the previous Rhapsody version over the winter via Comcast. Equipped with a new iRiver H10 and stoked about Rhapsody to Go and the $100 rebate they are offering for the H10, I eagerly attempted to download v3.0.

No luck - over and over again. I tried everything lsited on their website which was frustrating in itself in that each page of instructions for fixing the problem had more instruction links behind it.

Ultimately gave up and submittied a support request via email. It took 2 days to get a response. Isn't Real a big company? I couldn't beleive there was no chat support not to mention the 48hr turnaround. Awful.

Finally decided that $100 rebate was not worth it - a 1-year committment to a service I couldn't rely on was not going to fly with the wife. Signed on with Napster instead and so far so good.

Here's the kicker though - I go to cancel my 14day free pass and you can't do it online, you have to call. The problem is that when I clicked on the link to the phone number, where the number was supposed to be displayed there is an empty space. UGHHHH!!!!

Version 3 is awesome, just give it some time 2.1 users

Pros: bigger catalog, music recommendations, good price, proven

Cons: bad upgrade path from 2.1, no developer API (I want one!)

Review: Rhapsody seems to have released the 3.0 version without sufficient testing of the upgrade process. As a result there are a whole bunch of unhappy 2.1 users (well reflected in the opinions on this board). I was one of them, but now that everything is peachy again, I must say 3.0 is truly an awesome step forward:

New things I like:
- My Rhapsody (recommendations based on preferences and use)
- Rhapsody to Go (take the stuff on the road)
- Huge catalog
- Great new playlists

I'm not sure why another reviewer complained about a reducing catalog... I actually see the opposite... i.e. a lot more music has become available with this new upgrade, previously certain songs were not available at all, and now you can lsiten to the first 30 secs.

All I want now is a good API, so us developers can create tools for Rhapsody just like we did for Flickr.

Oh, one final tip: if you are not happy about the streaming performance (hickups that you didn't have previously, just increase the processing priority, it works like a dream)

Doesn't Do What It Says It Does

Pros: Easy interface, looks like iTunes

Cons: No support for MP3s, uses a weird format for music

Review: OK, I'm an iTunes user, new to this whole digital music thing. iTunes drives me crazy because I have to burn songs to CD to get them out of the protected ACC format and into something I can put on my Palm to listen to. Rhapsody uses another weird format and would not convert them to MP3 or anything that would play on anything but Rhapsody. Just what I need, another weird system with "specialized" software to learn. Yahoo has to be better.

Step down from 2.1

Pros: Some nice uses of data mining

Cons: Do I really want data mining?

Review: From a user standpoint, this is a much more difficult version of Rhapsody. Also, the evidence of data mining is everywhere, with albums preselected from what I have been listening to, etc. Could be a nice feature, but also a bit creepy unless one asks for this option and gives permission to be monitored. And we have to remember Real's past of spyware in older versions of Real Player. A lot of us still remember that about Real, the makers of Rhapsody, and the apparent data mining in v. 3.0 makes me nervous. For easier usability, I am sticking to v. 2.1 as long as I can.

Was Great now No Good

Pros: It used to have a huge catalog of music to stream

Cons: A shrinking catalog

Review: Intially a year ago this was a great service with a lots of music all available for streaming with your $9.95 per month. Now with no options, a significant portion of their musical catalog is no longer available for streaming, just a short preview and then purchase. One would think that the $120 per year would cover the cost of "listening" to a song, but apparently not...Do not bother with this service it is likely that when this is read by a potential customer their catalog will have shrunk even more. This is a service in decline look elsewhere.

Downgrade from 2.1

Pros: More sharing between users

Cons: You can't save playlists and distribute, more Big Brother is Watching You!

Review: Wouldn't you know that REAL, being the Trojan hoarse data mining Big Brother's we all know and love, would want to exploit Rhapsody's resources to this END? Rhapsody is a nice service, but the upgrade from 2.1 to 3.0 is really not a downgrade, but its a completely new release with a lot of the ncie features of the last removed, its a different design, its updated differently, its more controlled, its wanting to be yet another Bloody Portal, than a streaming music application. You know someone in the executive seat is starting to do the product development when the product starts turning into a portal. First you start with a music player, then you add a browser, then the browser starts selling you drugs, insurance and baby food.. All I'm saying, is be vareful with Real.. Speak with your money.. Its the only way these businessmen will listen to the consumers.

Needs more work, too resource intensive

Pros: Nice new features, if you need them

Cons: 10 times the processing resources needed on my computer

Review: Rhapsody 2.1 playing a music stream took up 2% to 3% of my CPU on my 1.7GH PIII with 640 megabytes of memory. I upgraded to 3.0 and Rhapsody was taking up an average of 28% of my CPU streaming music. Music frequently cut out often when I opened new windows or scrolled in other programs. 2.1 was working fine. I uninstalled and went back to 2.1. New features do not make up for poor quality.

Download/upgrade has altered my account info ?

Pros: Appears to be improved, but I can't access it

Cons: I can't log in anymore and there is absolutely no help from any support people

Review: I was a very happy Rhapsody 2.0 customer for the last year and had a quarterly auto pay account set up. On 4/27 I received the upgrade notice and eagerly downloaded and installed the software. I can no longer access the service, it doesn't recognize my username and password anymore, and after 7 requests for help through customer/technical support I have one response suggesting that an unscheduled service interruption on Wednesday may have made my account temporarily unavailable. After repeated attempts to download and reinstall the software I'm still not able to sign in to my account and no further contact from Listen/Rhapsody. If you have Rhapsody 2.0 keep it!
Updated
After 6 days of withdrawal I heard from a tech support agent who suggested uninstalling all Rhapsody components, deleting all folders and files that may be left behind, and trying the 3.0 download again. Presto! I'm up and streaming! It seems there is an incompatibility issue with the old version and if any remnants are left it blocks your ability to log in.

The new version is a huge improvement over 2.0, but the lag time in hearing back from tech support still bugs me.

This new 3.0 version is VERY buggy and I'm very disappointed! I loved the 2.1 version...I had been waiting for something like it for a long time. Now that I have 3.0, I'll consider iTunes!

Interesting fact: The rhapsody site has instructions for reinstalling 2.1. Hmmm...maybe they know 3.0 SUCKS!

First, I love type of service Rhapsody offers. I have 0--zero--zippo problem shelling out about $10 for this type on unlimited service. For me, this is the clincher over that little Apple application.

BUT, I am continually disappointed and frustrated by the new version of Rhapsody. Fresh install of XP, its fine for basic listening...try to use a subscription-friendly device...crashes, locks up, and otherwise hangs.

I'm taking the device (iRiver T10) back today...and am strongly considering changing to another subscription-based application.

Real/Rhapsody folks...WAKE UP! You're blowing it...and losing a long time customer.

It has its pros and cons

Pros: Attractive, fast and intuitive interface; "My Rhapsody" feature lets you discover new tunes; artist biographies; good selection of music; good stream quality

Cons: Connection problems; equalizers distort sound; no exceptionally easy way to find new music

Review: I'm using Rhapsody's 7-day free trial. I've had several connection problems, probably due to the amount of people using the service such that the server can't keep up. Music is in pretty good quality and the new "Rhapsody To Go" feature may revolutionize the music industry in a way that people will rent and not purchase from now on.

Cons: Interface is a bit clunky. Unable to customize interface. It can be annoying that certain artist catalogues are not available on this service.

Keys to the record store

Pros: Having Rhapsody is like having keys to the record store. Why bother downloading mp3s when you can stream anything at any time. Coolest thing on the internet (except launchcast which is cooler).

Cons: Catalog is not complete but is at least as good as anyone elses and is constantly growing.

Excellent music service!! Only .79 to burn, unlimited streaming!

Pros: Selection is just about equivalent to other pay-as-you-go music services, so you can't complain about that. Excellent UI interface, love streaming all day long at a fixed rate per month. .79 to burn a track is below industry rates in competing services.

Cons: You can't burn all of the songs that you can stream, but this isn't a Rhapsody problem, it is a problem with the record labels.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Why pay for music online when you can get it for free? It's like buying bottled water when you can just drink from the tap. It's a much more pleasant experience. You know the quality will be what you want without the hassle. The best way to experience Rhapsody is to upgrade to the full version and to hook up your pc to your stereo, which is quite easy. Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is, at best, a glorified CD preview service. The sound quality of the streaming audio is passably good, but it's not CD quality like the service claims in it's ads (I have a cable connection, so bandwidth isn't the problem). There were several albums I searched for that were not available, presumably because of artist/record company permissions etc. Some of the more glaring ommissions: Any Led Zeppelin or Madonna, Van Halen II, Any Linkin Park, several Rush albums. Good Music at a Reasonable Price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the music service I've been waiting for! In terms of the download, I use Total Recorder and feel that I am within fair use under two concepts established with VCRS. These concepts are "Time Shifting" (if I have the right to view a show on TV, I also have the right to record it for my personal use and watch it later.) and "Medium Shifting" (If I own a record, I can make a personal copy in tape or CD.) I figure if I have the right to listen to it on my computer, I can shift it to a CD to play later or even to my computer to listen to if I'm not online. From my point of view, if I make a copy for anything but my personal use, that's where I cross the line. All in all, I'm thrilled. Not since I was a college DJ have I listened to such a variety of music.

KILLER APP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Love it. Was skeptical, but gave it a shot. Never left. The quality is amazing, the selection good (please gimme all major labels and I'll gladly pay double) and the interface pleasant. You can create custom radio stations based on your favorite artists, you can skip a song (or a section of a song) if you don't like it, there's a fast search engine too (search on artist, title, etc.) One of the nicer things is that it will ALSO show albums which are NOT in its collection, so at least you know what IS out there. They offer nice cross-reference lists (influences, followers etc.) No full download you say...? Who cares! Try it and you'll see. If the songs are "just there" and "always there"... there's no need to download (save HD space and no need to become a CD-jockey). Problems with hickups etc.? Not for me. Never happened. You DO need broadband (at least 128kB, 56k is not recommended). There is definitely room for improvement... The app CAN use a lot of memory, the cache CAN get out of control if you don't close the app once in a while. The bookmark/playlist organization is subpar, sufficient but could be better. There's no rating mechanism (I'd love a Netflix-type recommendation engine, maybe they should just buy AudioGalaxy?!?). I'd love to see more artist background info or links to third parties with such info. Nonetheless... this IS truly a CELESTIAL JUKEBOX. Try it and you'll buy it (unless you're under the age of 18 and without a job). 10 Bucks a month, less than 1 CD, I call that a good deal. Warning, once you get this there's a good chance you'll become severely annoyed at your radio station with all of its advertising... Suggestion: get it through audiogalaxy.com and benefit from their "similar artists" tools (won't work if you sign up via listen.com)

Maybe this will make the RIAA stop whining

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used Rhapsody for a few weeks now--started their free 7-day trial and subscribed 3 days in. I listen to it at work through headphones most of the day, then when I get home I turn it on through the stereo. I've never had the skipping or stability issues others have noted, and I have it installed on 4 computers. The selection isn't perfect, but they have a section for new additions and it's probably 30 albums/day. The information on each artist and their albums is at least as thorough as CDnow's info. They even have information on artists they don't carry. I'm glad to see someone try to stop file sharing by offering a better alternative instead of trying to manipulate the legal system into getting them shut down. Overall I give it a 9 out of 10...the other point going for the few songs that they don't yet carry.

The Music Industries Answer To Piracy

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Since Napster died, I have been looking for a viable replacement to the fun I used to have searching for music online. I tried the various file-sharing networks but all are 1) dealing with illegal files like Napster, 2) very bothersome & take up alot of memory, and 3) susceptible to viruses. I was kinda miffed the music industry killed Napster and left us with no replacement... Then I got Rhapsody. For only $9.95 a month I can listen to so many tracks from not only popular artists but from less known niche artists. The service is remarkable and more then often I am able to burn a song to CD for a small fee if I like it. It feels good to finally get the best of both worlds (online music, vast library of songs) without feeling like I am ripping off the artist. Goodbye file-sharing, hello Rhapsody!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If you have a high speed connection, this is the service for you. Despite some gaps, the catalog is as impressive as I've seen from such services and the sound quality is good. Best online music service

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've tried many of the different legal online music sites, Pressplay, RealONE, eMusic and Rhapsody is by far the best. The catalog is huge and gets bigger every day. I think it is even better than the illegal free services. Kazaa, etc. have all of the new songs, but they don't have a very large back catalog. If you want to know what I'm talking about, search for Miles Davis on Kazaa and then search for him on Rhapsody. On Kazaa, I found one Miles Davis album, his most popular. On Rhapsody, I just counted and as of today they have 73 different Miles Davis albums!! Another great, new feature is that they have artist centered radio stations, so let's say you click on Louis Armstrong radio, it will play music by Armstrong and artists that are very similar. I do this regularly to find new artists that I'm not familiar with. The best thing about the radio is that if you don't like a song, all you have to do is skip over it! I highly recommend this service.

Get the Radio Plan not the Full Plan"

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Rhapsody is a pretty good "pay for play" internet music service. Quality is generally inconsistent and no information is displayed about tracks, such as Kbps, Source, Ripping Software, etc. but they have a pretty good selection and many of the tracks sound quite nice. Another big drawback to Rapsody is that they do not let you download music to your computer or other device for free. 99 cents per track is steep and only a select few tracks can be burned. Becuase of this, the only real use of the music library is to bookmark tracks so you can listen to them on demand. Worthless. BUY THE RADIO PLAN FOR HALF THE PRICE. You can play a station with the kind of music you want to hear and just skip the tracks you don't like. Don't worry. You'll hear a lot of your favorites and maybe some new ones. Untill they offer free downloads on the $10 paln the radio is the best deal.

The One and Only Source for Online Music

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I began listening to Rhapsody over 6 months ago and the service is truly a godsend. The quality is remarkable, especially when connected to a home theater's speaker system. The new version 2.0 integrates your online library seamlessly from whever you sign in, which really should've been done at the outset--well, they're not perfect, but getting there. So, I now veg out at the workplace listening to brand new music from, say Faith Hill (meowwwwww) or Elvis's new 30 Hit album. I may even listen to some of the many commercial free radio stations they offer--just to keep things interesting. When I return home, I once again veg out and any changes I made to the playlists or artist library at work are now on my home computer. The major complaint I'm reading here is the lack of downloading ability and mp3 conversions. Well, folks, if you have a decent sound card and some decent audio recording software, you can make an mp3 of EVERY song streamed from Rhapsody. And that is at 128Kbps CD quality. I recommend Cool Edit Pro software which is pricey, but you can you can probably find it on KaZaA or Bearshare...wink wink. Now if you choose this path to record, it does require more work than simply stealing a song off a peer-to-peer network. I also am in a moral quandary as to the legalities of this, but I am paying for this service so I rationalize to g-d almighty that it's clearly not as immoral as gnutella. In a way, it's a bit similar to when I held a mic to my stereo during the 80's to record "We are the World" and hear my mom yelling about dinner in the background. This time it's a tad more sophisticated and the quality is, well, digitally perfect. Anyway, I am most impressed at the selection of on demand music I listen to with the premium subscription service. It definitely is worth the $10 a month or so; in fact, I somehow only pay $24.88 per quarter year. I think I signed up an early bird special. Regardless, the future is here and Rhapsody is paving the way towards a most enjoyable and interface friendly player for all to drool over. Happy Hanukkah Folks!

Many are willing to pay for XM radio, for example, and not only can you NOT download, but you can't even choose your playlist. At ten bucks a month, this service is WELL worth the price. It gives me a HUGE library of music from which to choose, anytime I want.
