"Open Office is free too"
Pros: Free, great if you can't permanently install software
Cons: Needs internet connection
Summary: If you want a free word processor just get open office so you don't have to connect to the internet. Though this product is great for internet machines, public libraries, and other machines that don't have a built in word processor but do have internet.

The idea of programs such as Writely and the other online applications is to sever the dependence on a particular desktop system.
Of course there are other applications that are superior -- if you want them installed on your machine. However, if (like me) you work from three different machines, one a laptop, in a wide variety of locations, then a cross-machine application like Writely is a godsend.
Different strokes for different folks, and just because you don't seem to need it, don't think others don't.
Also...if my computer(s) crash, or my laptop is stolen, I'll still have my documents -- safe on probably the safest platform on the planet: Google's servers.
Have you backed up your computer lately? Do you keep the backups off site, in case of theft or fire?

The purpose of writely is not to provide word-processing to the computer, but to those who are away from the computer most of their time, and need to take their documents with them. If people wanted a desktop application, there are many other options available much better.
