Simply put, no other distribution beats the polished user experience offered by Linux-Mandrake 8.0. If you're currently running release 7.2, version 8.0 provides a seamless upgrade. And if you've never tried Linux-Mandrake, version 8.0's amazing level of automation and its decked-out installation GUI provide the perfect Linux launching point. Featuring a GUI face-lift and the latest versions of the kernel, Xfree86, GNOME and KDE, Linux-Mandrake 8.0 sits squarely at the forefront of powerful yet easy-to-use distributions.

Easy installation
With version 8.0, MandrakeSoft has hit a home run in terms of visual appeal and ease of use. Linux-Mandrake 7.1 and 7.2 both received high marks from us for thoroughness and usability, and version 8.0 carries on that tradition. The installer for version 8.0 is seamless as they come. Once you get past the first few screens (confirming keyboard, mouse, and monitor selections), the installer offers a wide range of packages available for installation. A graphical menu displays icons for preset application groups such as office, multimedia, Internet, console tools, development, and so on. You can choose to install entire groups of packages or opt for individual package selection, for which the installer provides an expandable outline listing every available package. After you select and install packages, Linux-Mandrake helps you configure your network with its new network configuration wizard, which automatically detects and configures network parameters. Setting up a dial-up connection is just as simple: you select your modem configuration from a menu, enter your ISP settings, and Linux-Mandrake automatically completes your PPP configuration.

GUI goodies
One of Linux-Mandrake's most useful features is the Mandrake Control Center, which lets you configure printers, monitors, and video and sound cards. It also allows you to install and upgrade applications, establish network file sharing, set up a firewall, and more. Linux-Mandrake includes a bevy of useful desktop apps, from productivity apps such as the StarOffice suite to personal finance programs such as the Quicken-compatible GnuCash. Linux-Mandrake 8.0's unique, user-friendly interface is reason enough to choose this stellar distribution, but its merits don't stop there. New additions include the 2.4.3 kernel, KDE 2.1.1, GNOME 1.4 (which includes the Nautilus file manager from now-defunct Eazel), and Xfree86 4.0.3.

Why upgrade?
The 2.4.3 kernel brings a host of improvements to version 8.0, including more reliable USB and firewire support, ATA-100 support, the Logical Volume Manager and ResierFS. Additionally, version 8.0 features substantially improved display options. Xfree86 4.0.3 offers much improved 2D and 3D graphics performance for DRI-compatible video cards; and KDE 2.1.1 features antialiased font support, which offers a dramatic improvement in display clarity.

Mandrake-specific improvements are less bountiful, consisting mainly of the new Mandrake Control Center, a flashier installation GUI, and greatly improved hardware detection. The Linux-specific package upgrades can be performed individually, but since version 8.0 includes upgraded versions of glibc and RPM, the process can be difficult. The question of whether to upgrade to 8.0 ultimately boils down to one of convenience. If you're willing to roll up your sleeves and upgrade packages separately, you may not need version 8.0; but if you prefer a more hands-off approach, upgrading to 8.0 is a wise choice, especially if you've had less than stellar success with hardware detection in past versions of Mandrake.

Support
Linux-Mandrake features an excellent support package. Once you register, you get 30 days of support via MandrakeExpert, a user-to-user forum where you can post tech support questions and receive cogent responses from experienced Linux-Mandrake users, called experts. This is an innovative concept, but it remains to be seen whether such a service will outshine the tried-and-true Usenet discussion groups consulted by most Linux users. We tested the service by posting questions about printing and DHCP issues and received sensible and useful responses fairly quickly--usually within a few hours. However, the distribution's printed user guide leaves much to be desired. It includes plenty of information to help you get started and troubleshoot a few problems, but if you need more detailed information, you should consult Linux-Mandrake's online documentation.

Bottom line
Users who want to try Linux but are frustrated with the steep learning curve will find a welcome change in this polished, easy-to-use distribution. If any Linux distribution is actually making progress toward the consumer desktop, Linux-Mandrake is surely it, offering a computing experience approaching the simplicity of the Macintosh. New users, especially those looking for a quick and easy alternative to Windows or the Mac OS, will be hard pressed to find a smoother, easier transition to the world of Linux.

New to version 8.0, the Mandrake Control Center allows for easy system administration, including package installation.

gimme a break

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I hate Windows, but I want it to be the default OS! Waaaaa! There's no simple way to change it! Waaaah! Actually, I'm an idiot and I figured it out. Hint: the Mandrake window implies that you configure it through MANDRAKE. I have Windows as the default OS for my wife (who is actually just waiting to get a new monitor for her G4 (she's a Mac person), and I've only just begun to explore Mandrake... installing programs is my next venture, but changing the boot menu was easy.

Arrogantie not only with microsoft

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The reason why I really wanted to like linux is my growing hate towards Microsoft. With every new thing commen users are pressed into directions microsoft want. I hate this arrogance. But right after installing Mandrake I got the same feeling. The startup system lets me choose my system (windows or mandrake) but there is no simple way to make windows my standard (time out) system and windows is put to the fourth or fifth place in line up. In addition at pc start I get a mandrake window right away instead of something more neutral. No thanks in this way.

Clearly Worth Considering

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have read the comments from other users and have been surprised that so many have report trouble with installation. This interface is simple enough even for me to use. It didn't ask for any more information than XP or 9x OS's usually ask for and in some instances less. I have installed Mandrake 9.0 on two boxes now - as the only OS on an ancient and dirt-encrusted Pentium 233 my kids abuse, and dual-booting with WinME on an el-cheapo 600MHz E-Machines. It's been running for WEEKS without restart or crashing. If it keeps this up, I'll install it on the big computer. Mandrake found and correctly recognized EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF ASSOCIATED HARDWARE. Both installations went absolutely seamlessly. It is happily co-existing with WinME. All the included software works as advertised. There is no reason to fear anything about this software.

MDK 8.2 is best Linux distro on planet Earth

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used Linux since 1997, exclusively since 1999. I have used RH5, RH5.1, RH5.2 RH6 and played with RH7. I've used SuSE from 5.2 to 8.0 but tried MDK 8.2 this spring. First I downloaded the three ISO files and installed them as a test. (SuSE's very good, I wasn't going to jump to something that wasn't better). The MDK installation and maintenance utilities are so much better and faster than SuSE I was won over, so I bought the boxed set to support Mandrake, even though I could have downloaded all their stuff for free. One line: Awesome distro! MDK recognized everthing on my box: 3COM905B, Toshiba RR modem, LexMark Z52 and later when I switched to the ML-1210 laser, Mustek Scanner, PleXWriter 8/4/32A, Toshiba DVD, wheelmouse, ATI r128 accelrated video card, MAG monitor, SB512 Live!,... All of it setup automatically! ReiserFS, Ext3, XCDRoast, CrossOver, SO 6.0/OpenOffice 1.01, MuPAD, QCad, FlightGear, Galleon, Konqueror, KMail, KNode, KStars (all the KDE 3.03 stuff) .... all of it works beautifully. Upgrading to KDE 3.03 was as simple as downloading all the rpms into a directory, su - to root, and entering urpmi -Uvh *.rpm (I and upgraded to KDE 3.01 using the SoftwareManager, but tried the xterm approach for grins. It was easier.) Installation is a no-brainer. If you can't install this puppy either you have really oddball hardware or you are too dumb to operate a computer beyond point&click. In the latter case have a knowledgeable friend install MDK 8.2 for you, she'll be doing you a great favor!

Couldn't get it to go

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had trouble w/installation. Did not want to recognize mouse, printer & modem setup.Tried three times, got a bit further each time, but this is not an intuitive program and is confusing as to what is next req'd. Reinstalled 98SE which is rock solid in my case. I think I could like Mandrake, but there is a learning curve req'mt I can't seem to meet. I can trouble shoot and fix 98, but can't hack Mandrake.

I am a Linux believer!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I new to Linux and currently have Mandrake 8.2 and I did not experience any issues with installation or use. This product is stable and I was surfing the web and chatting 45 minutes after installation. Linux is a different animal than Windows but if you're looking for an alternative I suggest giving Mandrake a try!!! You will not be disappointed!

Looks great, stable but worthless

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've built a computer from scratch. Configured a RAID system without instructions. But I have never been more frustrated with a product that this. Nothing against Mandrake, their product stands up well to the other Linux vendors and the installation is easy. The problem is understanding the gibberish needed to install programs. Last time I had this much headache, I was having my head pounded against concrete in a fraternity brawl. Installation of programs is IMPOSSIBLE for a newbie. I'm not joking. I'd download programs only to have them sit on the desktop like a turd gathering flies. Nothing I tried could install them. Even trying to install Netscape 6.2 so that I could use the email client, was impossible even with there limited online instructions. Everyone who has Linux based software assumes a certain level of knowledge of the inner workings. Without it, you may as well be speaking English to a Parisian. Porquae? Don't waste your efforts until this is ready for prime time. You want stability and ease of use, buy a Mac. You want software and combatability, but XP. Or you could torture yourself for fun and install this.

hallelujah!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First, I'm running 8.2 rather than 8.0. Second, I haven't tried getting tech support so I can't comment on that. Third, my Brother HL630 printer isn't working right and I haven't been able to install a driver to get my Aureal Vortex 2 soundcard to work. However, it's only been a couple days and I haven't given up on those problems. Otherwise, this Mandrak is absolutely marvelous. I had tried before with Slackware, Redhat, Debian and FreeBSD. In each case I got a little closer but never had enough of my devices supported to make it a useful system -- until now. Installation is a piece of cake, it's slick, it's solid, it's fun. Thank you Mandrake! Good bye, Micro$loth. The revolution is well under way.

avoid buying this product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I foolishly bought not only Mandrake 8.1; but 8.2 also. I never could get either version registered and the only way to contact mandrake is throught email and the internet. Every time I would go to the site they would tell me I was not a boxed product owner and could not get any support. After several weeks of trying to get help to get registered I gave up and bought RedHat. Do yourself a favor and buy Red Hat to start off. I never could get Mandrake to even acknowledge I owned two of their products. Nuff said.

This is the best

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Tried XP (ugh) ran it for a few days, formatted hdd got XP cd , office XP cd's smashed them with a hammer(yes I did!!!) Got Linux, Never turned back

Wanted to love it, but...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had read many reviews for Mandrake Linux 8.1, so I bought the personal edition. Being a linux newbie, installation/partitioning was a breeze. Both GUI interfaces were very nice. However, installing programs was a headache, even in RPM format. Very few downloaded programs worked, if any. And compiling programs from source on this Linux distribution did not work most of the time. Very stable, though, esp since it's Linux. And, unfortunately, being a AOL suscriber, I couldn't get Internet access. So all my hopes on a consumer friendly Linux distribution are on Lindows. Or, I might as well go for a Mac, since OS X is based on UNIX. I think Linux is still in the Windows 3.1 phase of development in terms of GUI (i.e. in reference to Microsoft's development of an OS from MSDOS to Windows XP). Too early to tell which Linux distribution will run the market.

desktop linux has arrived

Pros:

Cons:

Review: the level of desktop integration in mandrake 8.2, combined with your choice of office suite for linux, create a powerful user experience that leave other operating systems and application providers rushing to catch up.

User Rating: 10/10

a great alternative to M$

Pros:

Cons:

Review: A great OS!! Yes it does take some time to learn but it offers some great features without a $200 price tag and a strict license agreement. If you want to learn linux this is an excelent OS, it allows you to use the easy GUI interface or use terminals. It also does not hang or crash as much as windows. Its great to see a product that was developed by people instead of money.

Simply Put- "Mandrake Rocks"

Pros:

Cons:

Review: They have truly outdone themselves with 8.2. Ladies and Gentleman it's time to seriously take a look at Linux as a viable and stable alternative for all of your computing needs.

LEARN IT,LOVE IT,LIVE IT!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Finally an OS that will give windows some REAL competition! It installed without a hitch on my aging 350mhz AMD based system. I am using it as an internet server for my broadband cable connection. It is doing a rock-solid job!

I left Windows for Mandrake-Linux

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Have been using Mandrake-Linux 8.0 from it's release and left Windows happily !

User Rating: 7/10

Excellent stability and Feature packed.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Bordering on being cluttered, this distribution has everyhing you could ask for in a Linux kit. That, coupled with the easiest installation of linux distros makes this one a winner. (8.1 is even better!)

User Rating: 7/10

smooth installation, lovely interface

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After using Red-Hat Linux 6.2 then 7.2 I must admit, i was a little diappointed with using linux compared to using windows. Someone friends recommened that i give mandrake linux a try. So I borrowed the installation CD's and installed mandrake linux 8.0 on a seperate partition. Initial installation was a breez, Mandrake-Linux recognized almost all my hardware on both my gateway solo 9300 laptop and my HP desktop computer. It recognized my pcmcia enternet card was able to automatically configure my LAN connection for my DSL connection. Nice USB support for my HP-Deskjet printer, brilliant display on my laptops tft-active matrix display, and the bundle of software and suites is just lovely. At first I was kinda turned off from using linux at home, because Red-Hat Linux 6.2, 7.0 did not recognize nor configure half the hardware on my systems. I only used it for developement. But now, with Mandrake 8.0, I can surf the net, do powerful word processing and printing, chat, and even write reviews as I am writing this review from my Mandrake Linux OS using the Netscape Browser. By the way, you get a host of browsers to choose from. Just lovely. I still dual boot between Mandrake-Linux and Windows 2000 Professional, but now I find myself using Linux even more with the superb and flexable Mandreke-Linux OS. Maybe everyone don't have the same luck, but I'm glad I did.
