Pros The single-player storyline is fun and interesting but too many long cut scenes. The RC bomb and the crossbow are fun weapons. If you're not on a PC, and you're mostly into single-player FPS with a strong, guided storyline, you might enjoy Black Ops.
Cons Modern Warfare 2 outclasses Black Ops in every category including quality of graphics, sounds, voice-overs, user interface, stability, and performance. Multi-player performance suffers the most making the game choppy, even on a fast machine.
Summary Black Ops is an acceptable single-player FPS with a strong, guided storyline. If you like to "play a movie" this game works, mostly. I did have a few crashes in Single-player mode but eventually got it working.
If you're in it for multi-player fun, Black Ops is a downgrade from Modern Warfare 2. It's filled with glitches and performance problems. I also found that the graphics while not bad, were a step backwards for the series, as were the gun sound effects.
I am baffled as to why reviewers gave this game such a fantastic score. It's not just CNET, but ALL the other reviewers! Meanwhile, players have given Black Ops rock-bottom scores (check out amazon's reviews.) I have never seen such a wide gap between player reviews and editor reviews before! Ars Technica mentioned that writers were treated with posh accommodations, helicopter rides, customized flight helmets and specialty headphones ... all to woo them before they even touch the game. Perhaps the princely treatment clouded their judgment. Who knows. I got burned by the reviewers of Black Ops, and I learned a valuable lesson in the process ... disregard the pro game reviewers and wait a week to see the user reviews before you buy a game. Fool me once ...
Anyhoo, to sum it up: Before you buy this game, check Activision's and Steam's support page and see what players are experiencing ... it ain't good, and the support answer is "crank your setting down and turn everything off." This is unacceptable on decent machines (I'm on a quad with a 1 gig 465 vid and 12 gigs of ram. I can run other games, including MW2, maxed out.) Also, check out user-driven reviews since the folks who are actually *playing* this game do not seem to be experiencing the same euphoria as the editors who are writing the reviews.
Pros Fantastic story mode! Excellent Multiplayer mode and game play.
Cons Terrible graphics!
Summary I have really enjoyed this game. One of the best multiplayers around, one of the best and most entertaining games I own. However, this is all if you can get past the terrible graphics. They are quite bad considering how advanced war games have gotten.
Graphics aside, from the perspective of game play it is probably one of the most refined first person shooter games out there.
Pros Several different choices of game play. Multiplayer option is much better than most shooters.
Cons None at the moment.
Summary I have only owned this game a few days but have spent quite a few hours playing both solo and online. The story line for the 1st game mode is quite good, along with the zombie mode which suprisingly I spend most of my time playing. If you are a fan of 1st person shooters like myself you will enjoy this one.
Pros Fantastic multi-player experience
Addictive first person shooter
Weapons are (more or less) evenly powered
Operates well on my upper middle class PC
Cons Graphics are mediocre compared to similar current FPS games on the market
May sometimes receive long waits (5+ minutes) before a zombie multi-player game starts
Summary One of the greatest FPS multi-player games on the market
The campaign mode is good but not fantastic
The graphics are quite mediocre compared to several other FPS games on the market
Multilayer menu screen can often lead to errors
Pros Short and to the point: Got the game as a gift two weeks ago, three days ago without explanation my STEAM account was disabled making the game inactive. Steam refuses to answer inquiries, Activsion says they are not responsible.
Cons Game does not function without Steam Network, Steam Network locks you out after 2 weeks.
Summary My Last Activision purchase...EVER.
