Owned 10 years, sound great!by gurnx - January 28, 2011
Pros: Well built, excellent sound.
Cons: No headphone jack, volume control not marked.
Review: I've had these over 10 years. Recently one of the speaker-satellite units started 'dropping out' and replacement speakers were purchased. While waiting for their arrival an hour was spent troubleshooting the ATP3's: a cold-solder joint was found, re-soldered, re-assembled for a complete repair.
Listening to the ATP3 system vs. the replacement speakers I am impressed by the difference in sound quality. If I were looking for new speakers I'd first see if I could find a set of used ATP3s.
If these had a marked volume knob and a headphone jack I would have rated 5 stars.

Crisp trebles, boomy bass and style for a low price.by hoops5000 - January 28, 2010
Pros: It has a very clear treble and a bass that can actually rattle my windows.
Cons: The sound becomes a noticeably warped at high volume and the middle range sound is slightly muddy.
Review: Overall the sound quality is very good with crisp high notes and, when turned up, really boomy bass. The middle range sound is nothing special and can sometimes be a little messy. However it is hard to hear with such crisp tweeters. The indipendant treble and bass control are useful and allow you to focus on the sound you want to hear. The lack of a headphone jack is slightly annoying, but definetly not a deal breaker.
The sub woofer is not small so it is a bit of a pain trying to find a good place for it. the speakers on the other hand are very good looking and and take up almost no real-estate on the desk.
I'd recommend these speakers with out a second thought especially when you take the price into account.

Irreplaceableby JWWells - May 10, 2009
Pros: 1) Full sound with strong lows, mids and highs
2) They're still working after 6 years
Cons: 1) They don't make them anymore!
Review: These speakers are quite simply all I could ever need. They produce full sound in all ranges, and the downward firing drivers spread the sound to create the illusion of a much larger sound stage. The sub is just right without being too bassy, a major problem with many other systems including the ATP4 4.1 and VS4121 systems (go figure). My only gripe is that once these stop working, I may just cry - nothing else I've tried so far can compare.
Bottom line: This is not the same system as the newer VS4121, which sounds totally different. If you are hunting for speakers and you find a set of ATP3s on Craigslist or Kijiji or Ebay or wherever, snag'em. They were a bargain when new - they'll be a bigger bargain now.

Great sound qualityby Kapilnath - May 8, 2009
Pros: Well ATP3 my second woofer system, I had Creative inspire but the sub woofer was blown in 2 or 3 months. I'm using these ATP3 speaker for more than 2 years now and no problems at all.
Cons: Bass distorts at high volumes for some songs (Specially the satellites).
Review: Really a great value for money.
You will get more realistic explosive effects in games and in music you have to do some manual equalizing settings to sound cool.
When compared with other woofer systems ATP3 rocks.

Spectacual Sound!by diesel503 - December 31, 2007
Pros: Great Sound in a small area. Nice deep Bass,
Cons: Hard to find.
Review: I bought theses because I needed the space and Altec Lansing is a great company. They did not dissapoint. Great sound all around. It looks like two speakers and a sub but actually there is a speaker on the bottom of each of the two speakers that act as mids. Great for watching movies and also gaming. If you don't want a bunch of speakers all over the place try and find these online great prices too.

GOOD WHEN COMPARED TO OTHERSby mr.smithster - November 2, 2007
Pros: nice sound if not blasted
Cons: tops out rather quick, no head phone/input jacks
Review: nice speaker system when compared to others. sounded better then alot of other higher priced newer systems althought its still only a computer system and cant deliver true quality sound. had a bose 2.1 system right next to it and this sounded better. mine had right speaker plug problems but i liked them enough and found a replacement on ebay for $9. build quality is good on sats but so-so on sub and plugs. headphone/input jacks MIA. im happy with this system.
Updated
i thought this sounded good compared to others in the store till i got it home and the sound is lacking alot. all highs with no mids except out of the sub, which sound like "plastic sound". this sub is pitiful, no bass notes just one sound, boom-boom. distorts easily. connections into sub became a problem, sound would cut in and out, unless i jiggled the connections then it would work, but only for a short time time they would cut out again. i tossed it and got the best buy for a 2.1 system(the KLIPSCH PRO MEDIA 2.1 THX certified). i give 5 stars out of 10. would not buy altec lansing products again.

Packs a punch for not much money!by mikefromdel - October 6, 2007
Pros: Inexpensive, good sound range, good volume range without distortion
Cons: No headphone jack
Review: I bought these from Staples at a sale about 4 years ago. I still use them and run them through the Soundblaster Extigy I bought at the same time. For the $50 I paid, they sound great, they crank well before any distortion is audible. The desktop modules put out great highs and the sub puts out a moderate amount of bass, most of what I listen to requires cranking (I'm a 60's & 70's rocker, I.E. Black Sabbath, Zappa) I certainly wouldn't replace my home system with them, but for a desktop they can't be beat, especially for the price.

This feedback is very late but I still want to share my experience with this nice speakers.
I bought this mid-last year 2007 as a gift to my fiance along with her new mp3 player. I borrowed the speakers on the midnight of Dec.31 for the New Years party on our house and I'm seriously impressed with the sound of this speakers. We even compared this to one of the latest Boss 3.1 speakers (i can't remember the model) and really the sound quality is almost the same but the price is really big issue since the Boss speaker is 8x more expensive.

Great Deal, Best 2.1 Speakerasby moocna - April 30, 2007
Pros: Great sound, no distortion, great volume
Cons: Really dependent on sound source
Review: I bought these speakers 4 years ago, and haven't looked back since. They have awsome bass and treble (though, as the review says the ultra-low bass leaves room for improvement). There is no noticeable distortion anywhere within a reasonable volume (I've tried taking it as loud as it will go, and my ears gave out before distortion kicked in). That being said, it really depends on the sound source. I've had these connected to a number of outputs, and one of them must've been a bad soundcard. Long story short, the volume tended to randomly get louder and quieter, without me actually touching the volume nob, and distortion was really audible at about 70dB.

best sounding computer speakers I've ever heard!by d_train - February 16, 2007
Pros: awesome sound!
Cons: the fact that they are no longer available!
Review: I like a nice bright, clean (un-muffled) sound with a tight, clean, strong bass and these speakers have the sound clarity and depth one would expect from a high quality home stereo system. I've purchased other sets of Altec Lansing computer speakers that were more expensive than these and they just don't compare. I also just got a set of Harmon Kardon Soundsticks (clear speakers for the Mac) that, while they sound good and cost more than twice what these Altec's cost, don't compare for sound quality. I wish these hadn't been discontinued because I'd love to purchase another set or two.

Excellent Sub Satellite systemby dalockmanjr - May 27, 2006
Pros: Nice treble and bass
Cons: Not enough treble
Review: I have this system for a minimum of 5 years now just starting to give me problems now.
-Volume fades up and down
-Lineout to computer is going one channel will play then wiggle the connection and both channels play.
Downward firing mid-range drivers are too much cancles out the high frequency reproduction. Vocals are mid-range so they sound superb.... but string or wind instruments just dont have the detail.
When the system dies on me going to replace with Bose Companion 2

Great stylish speakers for a low priceby beboggled - November 11, 2005
Pros: Sound quality, looks, size, price
Cons: cables provided are a bit short, nothing else
Review: I have had these ATP3 speakers for years and they have pumped out great high fidelity sound for years, with deep bass that can handle music, movies, and games. I got it for 50 dollars, which was really a steal. The new version of these speakers i think look really ugly, while these are much more handsome. However, after about 4 years, the volume control lags somwhat and the right speaker sometimes doesnt work for a few seconds. Despite it's aging, i still love these speakers due to thier quality and sleekness.

More bang for you buckby - February 23, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: For the price, these speakers rock. The two satellite speakers provide crisp, clean, non-distorting highs, thanks to the two little tweets in each, complimented by a downfiring midrange speaker in the base of each. The subwoofer packs a POWERFUL PUNCH. Beware. Other speakers sound like they're being played through some kind of can--the highs aren't really that high and crisp--but these speakers will blow your ears off. For 80 bucks, you can't go wrong. And what's more, the quality's top notch--doesn't look or feel cheap in any regard. Bottom line: unbelievable sound and clarity for the price.

Design??by - January 5, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I agree that the design is cool-looking, but is it practical? The 3" drivers on the satellites are for midrange, so why are they facing down? Any sound other than deep bass is directional, so it doesn't seem like a good idea to point your midrange into the table. To get the best sound out of these speakers, I knock the satellites over so the 3" drivers are aimed at me. This way, midrange is quite acceptable!

Can't beat 'em for 30 bucks!by - November 30, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I was introduced to Altec Lansing quite a few years ago when a Gateway came with them (ACS5's). So, I decided to replace the cr*p HK-206 speakers that came with my new Dell with the ATP3. Very nice. Sure they won't replace a stereo system, but just try and buy a set of Bose or Infinity for your home HI-FI for $30 and the sales person will laugh you out of the store. No hiss, as reported in the few negative customer reviews, but just got them today. We'll see how they hold up. If they are anything even remotely like those old ACS5's of mine, I'll still be using them long after the computer itself is obsolete. And if they only last a year or two, then so be it. Can't beat 'em for 30 bucks!

$29.94 - TGF Staples (:0by - November 29, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: For <$30 after MIR, this is is a steal. My previous setup was two 140W bookshelf speakers connected to a stereo receiver, which obviously took a lot of space. This ATP3 isn't a bad set. A headset jack would be nice, as would subwoofer control. You get what you pay for - don't expect high volumes, however. Since this is an aging model, the $30 price justifies the set - sorry for those who spent $80 on this ATP3 recently. =T

Their sound is just killing me, let it be music, games, or movies. They don't compare to the previous two mentioned models. Excellent treble and bass!!! Great speakers at priceby - November 8, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Bought them this week after reading many reviews. True they don't have much amplification, so I pretty much send a bigger signal to the speaker, from real player crank up the volume and mess w/equalizer, from my cd player turn volume up really high and these speakers can handle them. They have great sound for such a cheap system...the sound doesn't lift off the speakers and fill the room like my bw 602's do, but then again the denon amp and speakers were $800 alone so wasn't expecting that. Definitely enjoy them and the bass is incredible for the sub and the satellites get all the notes!! Buy them, you'll enjoy them, just crank up the volume from cd player or computer.

Review: I spent days thinking I had a driver problem only to find out that the ATP3 case input jack was the culprit. Wiggle the lead and there is all kinds of sound. Offset angle plugs or repositioning of where the jacks come out of the panel is an easy solution. Something else to fix...

The Best Sound System I Have Ever Usedby - October 3, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Being that I live my life on my computer, I decided to do a major upgrade. Included in this upgrade were the Altec Lansing ATP3 speakers. I immediately fell in love with them not only for thier desktop space saving size, but for the sheer quality of the sound they produce. I had to tweak the speakers a little, but even before that they were outstanding. They do not require 600 wires as most surround sound systems do, yet they still produce sound quality to rival most surround sound systems. The speakers themselves are extrememly well designed for both practicality and aesthetics, making them one of the top systems on the market today.

Review: alright i bought these things, played some music, and games, they have great base but the drivers are way too small to do any good, they blow out very easily, and while listening to music with lots of guitars and drums and everything distorts terribly, but the bass is great, but not quite big enough drivers on the sattelites, buy some grado sr 80 headphones, you'll be better off

Bad Speakers? GET REAL, THESE ROCK!by - June 21, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: What are you people thinking about? These speakers kick. No, there isn't a sub-woofer volume control, but I found out that if you use the "Bass" control on the speaker, it actually controols the volume on the woofer. Thurn these up to the 2 O'clock knob, and they will make you def! I HIGHLY recomend this, buy with confidence!

Great speakers... for a while.by - May 9, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Note that this review is based upon the ATP5 (now ATP4.1) set; this product has mysteriously disappeared from the list here. I bought these speakers a little over a year ago, brand new, from Altec's site ($250 retail at the time!). For about six months, they were great. Loud, lots of bass, perfect for games where direction orientation is necessary (Quake tournaments, etc). After that time, though, I turned them on and the subwoofer blew up. Literally -- caught fire under my desk. I called up Altec and they were happy to replace the system. Got the new system and it's lasted for about seven months. Now, the subwoofer is doing the exact same thing it did before it died... it's got a severe lack of bass. Almost as if the speaker is blown, but upon inspection, isn't. The sub is resonating with a horrible "oomph" sound, and tomorrow the system will be on its way back to Altec again, in exchange for a set of 4400s. If you asked me for a review within a few months of my purchase, I'd be all ecstatic... but this is too much. Shipping is starting to outweigh the cost of just purchasing a new set!

Great speakers at a very attractive price.by - May 6, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Hiss is very predominate at high level of listening, and slightly notice able if carefully listen to at low level. Mid range is a little muddy at all listening level. The base is very good for such a cheap setup. It will not make your heart skip, but the thump is loud enough to annoy your roommate. Overall it is a very compact & great value for a system that is as good or better than other systems that cost much higher. A perfect companion for your computer, but is not good enough to replace your home entertainment stereo system.

There are few speakers out there as good as these.by - May 4, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I bought these speakers at least 4 months ago. They are still pumpin'!!! They're great. I can't imagine a better deal for $80 CAD. I wish the sub would pick up a few lower bass frequencies but...hey you can't have it all! The look is great and the control is really good. All around great speakers.

No blowing up hereby - April 14, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I've had the speakers for some time now, and they are still working very well. Most of the time they are at high volume and they haven't shown any signs of problems. So I don't really know what the deal is with them blowing out, but until I see this i would have to say this is a great bang for your buck.

What A Great Buy!by - April 9, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I recently spent about a week going to Best Buy and Frys listening to tons of speakers. These are the only ones that could satisfy my standards, excluding the 5.1 surround sound from Logitech and Yamaha, which I couldn't afford...

Anyone saying they get bad distortion or weak bass and humm/buzzing dosen't know how to EQ. The bass seemed weak to be before I EQd the Winamp Player. Now the bass is as powerful as many higher-end systems. (A nice tip is to turn all software volume down to about 20%, then crank the speakers. You get smoother sound and a LOT less noise) The treble is amazing, translating cymbals and hi-hats perfectly. Mids are lacking but not really noticeable. I have my sub under a desk and it is still quite noticeable in the mix. Dave Matthews Live In Chicago is the best I've ever heard it. Rock On!

Strange buzzby - March 20, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I too had high hopes for these speakers. The look is what sold me. After I plugged them the sound was not what I expected of these high dollar speakers. Also without these speakers even plugged into the computer there was a strange buzzing sound coming out of the right speaker. It was not from EMF either. I made sure of that. I would look elsewhere for quality speakers.

Kings of their price rangeby - March 16, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I wasn't sure what I was going to get when I bought this set, but I ended up with more than I paid for. They sound better than speakers of equal (and in some cases, greater) value. That and they look pretty darn sleek. If you're not looking to spend a whole lot on speakers, but don't mind good sound, these are it. FYI, I have moved on to Klipsches, so I'm not just protecting my investment, the ATP3s really were good speakers while I had them!

Glad I researched!!!by - February 6, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I am a 40ish year old female who like to understand song lyrics and CAN'T STAND RAP or HARD ROCK. I didn't need "headbanger" speakers. Just ordered ATP 3 W (W stands for white) speakers from PRICESHOCK.com and received my speakers in two days for $65.50 which included FREE shipping. I hooked them up last night and I was thrilled with the sound quality, appearance and instant hook-up. They produced EXACTLY the sound I was looking for and I feel I purchased them from a very good vendor. White was very hard to locate and this place had them in stock. I would really encourage you to listen and then make your choice. Since this constitutes a stereo (my puter) for me I couldn't say enough good things about the ATP 3!!

Good Soundsby - February 4, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I've read many reviews for multi-media speakersbefore purchasing the ATP3. The reason I prurchased this unit is for its value. I new the limitations such as high volume distortion, lack of a headphone output and an independent volume control for the sub. This unit performs well to just above the 3/4 range volume control. It will have some distortion at max level. Sub will shake your desk and suggest you place them on the floor for maximum effect. I purchased these babies at Sam's for 49.99. I suggest that this unit will be a great buy for others as well at the 50.00 range.

They have a great sound. I paid $52 for them from Dell. (I just don't have the room for the speaker systems with with 4+ speakers.) These work great. Pros:
Cons:
Review: I purchased these speakers believing they were going to sound great. They did for about 2 weeks, now their blown. They can't stand up to much volume without distortion. I know of cheaper speakers that are better deals. Also the lack of a volume control on the sub is not a good thing. There is also a real bad buzz when the speakers are on that I haven't figured out yet. If you want really good sound and volume buy Klipsch.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: I am very pleased with these speakers. Many reviewers mention the lack of a headphone jack as a negative for the ATP3 as well as the AV300's. I purchased a "Media Hub Switch" at CompUSA for $10.00 which solves the problem and in addition, lets me switch between the speakers and my headphones at the touch of a button. No more reaching around the back of the computer!

Pros:
Cons:

It's ok for lower volume listeningby - December 23, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I purchased these speakers as a 2nd choice to the Yamaha yst-ms50's. The Yamaha's were out of stock at the time and I did'nt want to buy the display model. In the store the Altec's sounded good but I noticed a lack of DEEP bass like that the Yamahas had. When I got them home I have to admit that they sounded very good and had an incredible sound stage. The only problem I found with them was that they were very bright sounding at high output levels. The lack of a bass module control made it impossible to adjust the bass to a good sounding level. The bass control on the sat's controlled both the sat's and the sub making the output to the sat's clip before the bass output was satifactory from the sub. If Altec would find a way to fix these problems, these speakers would be awsome. Never the less I finally got the Yamaha's and they are awsome.

Pros:

Review: I was unsure about these because of a few bad reviews, but the majority ruled again here at CNET! I sent my dad out to get these and they produce AMAZING sound for their price and size! Although mid range is a tad weak, the sound is clear and crisp with no hiss or hum. The sub punches and throbs nicely, but don't expect it to shake pictures off the walls. My computer is a Compaq Pressario with the factory sound card and these speakers rock for MP3's, movies and games. You can't go wrong with these babies! A great price for such clean, potent sound.

Pros:
Cons:
Review: I recently picked up a set of these for about $100 Canadian. I replaced my crude Zoltrix speakers which came with my first computer. Right out of the box, I noticed some coloration in the mids, but why be picky at this price? The highs are fairly detailed and the bass is decent. We're not talking high-end audio here, but for most non-critcal computer audio applications, they more than satisfy. Good Enough!

Good Stuff, but research 1st!by - November 5, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The Altec caught my eye because it looks good. I toyed around with the sound in several stores before thinking 69$ was safe to spend. However at home I noticed why this product got negative comments. Know that the speakers are treble speakers and do not produce any bass whatsoever, they also only work best when you separate them-I mean put them as far apart as you can-or else they will sound very weak. The subwoofer, on the other hand, produces no treble and if you turn the bass up too much it smoothers out the little treble speakers and sounds weird. Overall The woofers are wonderfully deep and the treble speakers are crisp + clear if placed well. Bottom Line- these are worth it, but know what you are buying-I listen to Hip-Hop and Rock and it sounds good on the Altecs but I can't imagine stuff like Classical or Light music playing out of them.

Poor quality soundby - September 10, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Bought Altec Lansing ATP3 for $79. The next day I saw in Costco Harman/Kardon HK 695 Champagne for $100 (the HK can also be purchased from Dell). Tested them both at home simultaneously. There is a huge difference, the ATP3 sounds hollow without any mid-range plus unpleasant overactive bass from subwoofer, which can not be controlled (the HK 695’s sub has volume control). The HK 695 system is superior in every aspect; has even surround mode. The ATP3 are definitely unsuitable for music listening. The only thing I liked on the ATP3 was their shape - anyway they went back to the store the next day.

I get great bass from games and music, though I do miss a headphone jack. My dad has the BA735 and those don't come close to the sound that I can get out of my ATP3's! I haven't tried Tech support, so I don't know how it is, but I did get a 2 year extended warranty from Best Buy. That way if they have any problems I can take them back get them replaced, new, for free!

These speakers are great, till they BLOW!by - August 30, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Good bass and ok high end provided for a decent sound for the money. Until after 36 days of ownership, they blew up. If you check out the review of altec's ATP-5 system, you will see the same problem. I will not be buying any other system from this manufacturer.

A lot of problemsby - August 26, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: These are good speakers for people that just want speakers that sound OK and are easy to put together. I run into a lot of incompatibility problems with my SB Live Platinum. The software restricts the speakers bass output and frequency. Now, I took it to college and packed it in bubble wrap, yet the thing still broke. I have only bass from my speakers, and a sub that's worthless. If you are a audiophile, these are not your speakers.

Excellent product for the priceby - August 24, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I was looking for speakers in the $40-50 price range but ended up with these instead($79 plus tax). The sound of the cheaper speakers was sufficient for my needs though the ATP3 sounded better. What sold me was the fact that the sub-woofer volume adjust was on the right satellite. Other systems had it on the sub woofer or not at all. This was big for me because I liked the convenience of not having to crawl under my computer station to adjust the volume. Also, the sound difference finally sold me. These guys played better and I was attracted to that. They produced a good range and volume in the store but kicked b*** in my room. A good buy that I am happy with.

You Can't Beat the Price!by - August 19, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: What a system! You can't get better without spending outrageous amounts of money...This thing has PLENTY of volume and more bass then you can shake a stick at! It rocks my little room with ease! The two tweeters on each satillite really catch the high-end...down-firing 3" cones on each satillite...VERY NEAT...The sub is really as big as it looks, or bigger! Convienient controls...volume...treble and bass on one of the sats, that's all ya need! Go get these...

Pros:
Cons:
Review: These bad boys are sweet. They may look a little week but once you give them a good tune, movie, or game to play, they'll show what there really made of. My favorite part of the set is the sub(of course). I went from a ASC33 to these bad boys and i couldn't be happier. The old speakers are now just sitting with no use in the garage. sad day. anyways if you have about 80 bucks to blow, get these speakers, you wont be dissapionted.

Can't go wrong with these babiesby - July 21, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I had a pair of Yamahas with 30watts of subwoofer power and the woofer blew on me after three years. I wanted speakers that didn't cost much but could still give the same punch and clarity as my previous set. Well, I went to a local computer show in my area with the intent of settling for the Altec Lansing ASC33 speakers, but came accros these (APT3). The vendor at the show had them on display and they sounded pretty good but he had them kind of low but they still sounded good. I read the specs and he recommended them as well. So I bought them and hooked them up and MAN OH MAN!!! These babies kicks some serious booty. You always read in other peoples comments that they are great for the money, well I say the price is more like a small fee for a set of great quality speakers. The bass is strong thumps with clarity, the satalite speakers throw awesome midranges and stereo quality tweeters. Just wanted to add that I have a Creative Labs Ensoniq sound card which only costs me 25 bucks at a show once and these speakers sound awesome. No exageration, you can't go wrong even if your sound card is 'mediocre' in todays high standard sound card quality. Save your money and get these, they are more than worth it.

Pros:

Review: The low frequency performance is stunning!perhaph it's more than it should since sometimes you feel too much bass but not the mid freq.the only fault is in mid freq.it can't catch up with bass and treble. In short the overall performance of the speakers exhibit a sligthly bandstop filter of sounds.

The most excellent speakers you can buy for the price!!by - July 7, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: A friend of mine bought these speakers, and the first time I looked at them, I laughed. "What a poor sap!" I thought, "He got so ripped off!!" And then he plugged them in. I was blown away, to put it simply. How could a sound so clear be coming from these tiny speakers? So I told him to turn it up. With the volume up well past half, blasting Meat Beat Manifesto, it was still clear! Needless to say, I drove to Best Buy and bought myself a set the same day. Still no complaints. Oh! And their stylish too!

Pros:

Review: Sure they don't have seperate inputs or any other bells and whistles, but setup is a *breeze* and they sound just as good as speakers twce their price. I find they are great for gaming but if you want to blast your music throughout your livign room you might look elsewhere. For those wondering the main speaker is a downward-firing mid in the base of each stand - pretty smart. Had mine for 6 months and no problems so far; best bang for the buck and they look very stylish.

This is a truly excellent set of speakersby - June 28, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I went out on a limb and bought these speakers only cause they sounded good in the store...and I'm more than happy for doing so. The quality is astounding for such a reasonable price. Initially, the mids sounded kind of awkward, but it was nothing that a little equalizer tweaking couldn't handle. Even when I crank the speakers up to ear piercing levels, they're surprisingly clear. One peeve though...these speakers are not too fond of lower bass frequencies. The Altec Lansing ACS 340s (I think that's the model number) that I replaced handled lower frequencies better than this set of speakers. The sheer quality of the sound as a whole makes up for the loss of lower frequencies though. Also, it seems to me that these speakers sound especially good when playing live tracks. All in all, a great value and a superb set of speakers.

Great sounding speakers for the priceby - February 9, 2001
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Bought the ATP3 speakers week ago for $115 Can a lot cheaper if you buy in the U.S.If all you want is two speakers and a sub this is the one to buy. Great for gaming or for just listening to music.Great bass and clear sound. If you like to crank up the volume to the max then you would need a bigger watt system then these.Good for average volume which all I use for I like to keep my ear drums lol. Speakers don`t take very much room on your desk and you can control volume, bass & teble from one of the speakers rather than the sub where most speakers you buy has the volume control which can be a pain in the you know what.Iv`e heard more expenive speakers but they dont nearly sound as good as the ATP3. Buy them you won`t be disappointed. For the price you can`t go wrong.

Maybe I got a bad pair... but...by - November 24, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: These speakers suck. I have just purchased a pair to replace my four year old altecs that had developed a buzz. The sounded good in the store, so i laid down the cash and got some. I will be taking them back tomorrow. Poor power handling (distortion and breakup, especially the tweeters), overactive subwoofer (in a small room, if you like balanced sound, way too much bass, overrides the mids often), and bad distortion on any loud passages. Look cool, but, if pushed, sound horrible.

Rock the house!!by - November 24, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Having owned AL ACS3 3-piece unit (which I bought for $130) for over 6 years has spoiled my listening habits while working on my computer. Recently I purchased ATP3. First, the quibs: No headset input, no separate bass volume control and shallow mids. ACS3 had dual input, headphone jack, and separate base control. Now I have to buy Y-adapter and extensions. However, those shortcomings are easily made up by ATP3's clear highs and amazing bass. Mids are not quite as beefy as I would like, but listening to CDs and games are a near high-fidelity experience. the bass from ATP3 makes my $500 Sony shelf system's bass sound like a cheap boombox. For $70 (from buy.com), this is truly one of the best upgrades I've made to my computer.

The Bass is Hard and soild, and can be adjusted from none)which still sounds GREAT) to Full, which, needless to say, will rattle and loose items to the floor. I think that i'm gonna buy another pair just for my Dreamcast and keep these things forever.... If they made a new version that was MORE powerful, i'd buy them too. But i will never regret buying these amazing, ear defying speakers!

Very nice speakers considering quality, price, and STYLE!by - October 30, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Excellent speakers, overall. I am QUITE IMPRESSED with the mid-range and tweeker output quality, especially considering the size and price. Bass could be a hair better, but I more blame my sound card than the speakers themselves. I am most impressed with the sound quality considering the low-profile and styling of the satellite components! These speakers are most DEFINITELY worth the $60 I paid for them, though NOT the $100 as I have sometimes seen. P.S.: Disappointed in the black-grey color? Try searching for ATP3W.

Blow U Away SOUND! Aesthetically Beautiful!by - October 28, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Thanks to all the CNET comments! I made up my mind on these speakers after reading the reviews and I couldn't be happier! I can't believe the sound for the price (I paid $69!) and my neighbor keeps complaining about the BASS! The sub-woofer turns my whole desk into a speaker and the down-fired mid-ranges add to the effect! Way to go Altec Lansing! Best looking and best sounding speakers on the market! Don't pay for the Monsoons until you've checked these out at less than half the price!

Pros:
Cons:
Review: im not gonna come out and say that a 60 dollar pair of speakers and subwoofer replaced my home stereo. im not even gonna say it blew me away... plain and simply... they go loud, they sound clear at all volumes, strong base. UNBELIEVABLE value. if you want nice sound and dont want to spend $150+, get these.. you wont be sorry

Excellent Speakers for the Moneyby - October 24, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The sound is excellent especially bass end. The weak point would be high end range but still excellent choice for music..nice to have separate controls for bass, treble and volume upfront on one of the speakers. It is amazing the sound that can come from such small speakers.....

Great value, look good, low priceby - October 19, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The good: Great set of speakers. The bass is really incredible for such a small package, and the overall sounds is very crisp, and loud! Cranks out way more sound than I imagined. And, you can't beat the price. The Bad: Could use a tiny bit more lower mid-range, but not unacceptable; the knobs feel a little cheap; and as with all computer speakers, the cables are too short.

A Simple Surprise...A Wonderful Pleasureby - October 14, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I spent many months searching but I overlooked these Speakers because I didn't believe 30 watts of total power would be enough. So, I considered 100 to 400 watt speakers...Glad I didn't pay for those..Simply, the sound is great for movies, CD's, DVD's and MP3 files. Base and treble controls are good. The only thing that would make these speakers better would be the option to adjust the base with or without the master volume control (would like to see this addition on the current volume control panel). At high volume levels the subwoofer really can blast..it would be great to lower the S-woofer volume. Overall, I'm very pleased with these Speakers... Thanks to all for the feedback on these speakers..it helped me make my decision and after hearing them in the store..I knew all of you were right about these.. They sound just like a very expensive home system.

Great Look, Wonderful Sound...by - October 1, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: These speakers are some of the best on the market. They give wonderfully clear sound, for having only two speakers. Not only do these speakers perform great with both music and gaming, but their look adds a spark to any deaktop. And at a price of under $100, I give this speaker system a great thumbs up.

Good Speakers that go thumpby - October 1, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: These spakers are some of the best I have heard in a while. Great bass, especially when you crank it in something like winamp. Only complaint is earphone jack, but i guess you don't buy this to listen to headphones. Wish they were digital to stop analog hiss, but I am sure that is in the drawing boards. Wood sub helps deliver true thumping goodness! Get them!

Skeptical about them.....by - September 11, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I was skeptical about these speakers when I bought them I thought they wasn't going to sound as the FPS 1000 MAN!!! was I wrong about that these ATP3 are great when I first put them on they sound it funny but when I played around with the (newq gold) equalizer the sound was increadible. I can't believe the sound that comes out of these speakers and if you don't have the (newQ gold) EQUALIZER you have to get it too so that you can hear the way these puppies sound. LOVE THEM.......

Great Sound from tiny speakersby - August 11, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: These speakers sound great, with awesome bass. They really rock the room. My computer is top of the line but the OEM speakers were terrible, after searching for speakers over a month I settled on these and I'm 110% glad I did, best money spent to date. I'd recommend thse over Polk or Boston's.

Good price, good bass/treble, no midrange!by - July 24, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I just bought a set of these speakers and to my surprise, it was not capible of picking up the midrange on some songs I have in my collection! Great bass and treble though.... The clincher was playing the song "cracklin rose" by Neil Diamond, durring the bridge " you got the way" there is hand clapping on the right channel these speakers are not playing! My cheap monitor speakers play this part just fine! I'm really dissapointed,it's going to be difficult taking these back, but I want my extended speakers to play everything so I can trash my cheap monitor mounted speakers!

Awsome at this price range!!!by - July 13, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I just bought it today and only took me less than 1 min to setup the speakers. The speakers generate a giganic bass as well as volume. I love the speakers and they are awsome!!! The best one I've ever had. It may not be the best speakers out there in the market, but at this price ($99), I highly recommend this speakers to mainstream user.

Out of the box success & great priceby - June 29, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: Just finished demo'ing them in my large living room and I am very happy. I can't imagine what they'll do in my little office. My ADA305's just went out (they were very good) and I needed replacement. I have Yamaha YST MS28's in my home and like them, but the sub is not in wood, so it rattles at high levels and there are no tonal controls. The ATP3 sub is in wood and that seems to make a big difference. The treble and bass controls are sufficiently effective. I was worried about the downfiring mid-drivers, but vocals and instruments in music come across very well (haven't tested it on games/DVD). The 6.5 bass-driver seems to chew up any signal with ease and the highs are crystal clear. Thanks for all the reviews, I looked long and hard for an affordable set and the ATP3 is it. P.S. Outpost's overnight is as good as advertised-ordered last night just before midnight (eastern) and they're here in Idaho at noon (just $75 total). Great price, sweet sound, and good looking too!

Oh my GOD, these speakers are INCREDIBLEby - June 7, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I just want to thank each and everyone of you for your opinions concerning these speakers. I researched PC speakers for a couple of weeks and wrote down all the models to see if I could find them locally and listen to them. I heard the Labtec models and the Cambridge models and a few Altec Lansings, but try as I might, I could not find anyone who had the ATP3's. However, I read all of your comments here about these speakers and they were by far the most encouraging, so I decided to take a risk and trust you. Man, am I glad I did. The speakers came in today and I fell instantly in love with them. From the moment I got them hooked up I have been testing them, and I have to say that these speakers are by far the best PC speakers I have ever heard, whether it be for music, or games or movies or whatever. They are just incredible. Thanks for helping me make this decision, it's not one I'll likely ever regret.

I got Rippedby - June 2, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: I bought this system at a local superstore, and when I got them home the right speaker sounded like it was blown, all scratchy and horrible. So, I figured it was a manufacture defect. I boxed em up and took em back, when I tried the new set the left speaker was blown! Can you say quality control? why would Altec Lansing not check these speakers before they left the factory? Im boxing them up AGAIN and Ill be very wary of Altec Lansing from now on. What a bummer

Great speakers, very funky style.by - May 29, 2000
Pros:

Punch Bass, a few quirksby - May 25, 2000
Pros:
Cons:
Review: The sound is very good. The wooden box that houses the subwoofer makes for deep, punchy bass. I'm not impressed with the midrange and highs. Music and sound effects are reproduced with proficiency. However, voice comes in really scratchy. If your going to do language programs that require you to listen to lots of voice, get something cheaper geared to the voice ranges. The volume knob is really tight, hard to turn and too small. If you're planning to listen to music or play games, this is a great little system that puts out big sound.
