With 150 watts in the subwoofer and 75 watts per speaker, the $135 Creative MegaWorks 250D-THX 2.1 speakers offer plenty of power, dwarfing competing 2.1 systems, such as I-Trigue L3450 speakers. Better, since they've been around for a while, the price of the superior MegaWorks 250D-THX speakers has dropped beneath that of some of the more recent sets, making them a terrific bargain for anyone seeking top-quality, THX-certified, PC-audio output with minimum setup fuss.

The black, square-shaped MegaWorks 250D-THX speakers each feature a single 3.5-inch driver, while the massive subwoofer uses an 8-inch, down-firing throw driver and a laudable frequency response (25Hz to 20kHz) sure to rattle your floorboards. A wired remote and a set of standard minijack cables are included in the box, but the subwoofer also has a port for an S/PDIF digital-audio cable, should your sound source offer that kind of output.

We watched Chapter 27 of Matrix Revolutions with the subwoofer, the treble, and the master volumes at their highest levels, using the standard analog connection on our Apple Power Mac G4, and we were surprised to hear absolutely zero distortion. At a more reasonable listening level, the MegaWorks 250D-THX subwoofer still offered tons of throttle without jeopardizing the clarity of the dialogue or the score.

Gaming offered similar results: throw a grenade or fire a rifle in Call of Duty, and be prepared to field noise complaints from angry neighbors--the low-end experience is intense. Our musical test for the speakers, Wilco's "Hummingbird" (from a CD), also ended with a positive outcome. Less bright than the SoundSticks II, the MegaWorks 250D-THX maintain a very respectable high-end clarity, while the low end on the kick and the bass offers a thick and warm complement that is never muddy, though we did have to turn the subwoofer volume down to 50 percent to achieve a musical balance.

Despite their audio quality, the MegaWorks 250D-THX speakers are not without their flaws. The subwoofer-connected remote (which features a headphone jack, mute and power-standby options, and controls for the treble, the subwoofer, and the master volume) is armed with a jumpy, unreliable select button. Another facet of the MegaWorks 250Ds that may give you pause: the huge subwoofer. You won't get enormous low-end bump with a tiny box, but at 11.5 by 11.5 by 13.0 inches (HWD), there had better be plenty of room under your desk.

Minor complaints aside, the Creative MegaWorks 250D-THX speakers offer considerable power and clarity, outshining much of the similarly priced competition.

The Greatest

Pros: While pumping up to 75w, the satellites are very small and are well shielded; the satellites produce rich sound; the sub produces an ungodly amount of solid bottom end; OK remote

Cons: The remote does leave a little to be desired, it only has 5 LEDs to show volume, sub, and treble levels, also the power and mute buttons are stiff

Review: Absolutely great set of speakers, damn near flawless... But next time Creative, give us a better remote...

Pros: loud indeed, very very clear, impresive subwofer, excellente mid and high

Cons: is not a 5.1 and its a bit expensive but you get what you pay, the best i think.

Review: I must to say ive never note a hiss, maybe because my soundcard(x-fi music extreme)wich is thx certified aswell. this speakers are extremly loud, my father can tell you. And now im very sensitive to the sound quality because the speakers systems of my friends sound not good enough for me.

The real deal in quality sound from a PC

Pros: Clear, pristine mids and highs - and the bass! These are incredible! I also like the remote - easy to adjust on the fly.

Cons: I really can't find a fault with these speakers!

Review: I have owned these speakers for two years. The sound is phenomenal. Jazz, classical, soft rock all sound refined and on the money. I listened to the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system and the highs burned my ears - way too much sizzle for me. These, however, are just right. Did I mention that the place these seem to excell is the midrange (the most critical area for music). The bass is in a word - excellent. I am soooo sad that these speakers are no longer available in the U.S. I wanted to purchase a set for my office - alas can't buy them in the U.S anymore (damnit). If I hopped a plane to England - no problem. The only set available here is the 210D which I have ordered, but there's no remote - ok it does have a volume control. Cambridge (a part of Creative) had a jewel and decided to offer it to everyone but Americans! I know I am rambling here (sorry). Here's my closing - these are the best multimedia speakers I have ever heard! I hope the 210Ds are as good. If you can snag these - buy them!

Brilliant Speakers

Pros: These are brilliant for any purpose. Great base, mids and highs!

Cons: Slight hissing when no noise is being played, nothing to worry about. Not surround sound... but mega cheap off e-bay

Review: I bought these speekers super cheap off ebay and they blew me away. These puppies and are amazing for any use (i highly recomend trying these out on a THX Cerified movie). My only gripe is of a minimal hissing from the satalites when no noise is being played. Buy these... seriously!!!!!!!!!

Sound good but have PROBLEMS

Pros: Sound great, can get unbelievably loud, super loud bass, a powerful system

Cons: Overheats really easy, cheap controller

Review: I have had problems with some of the lower cambridge speakers in the past and therefore i decided to spend a bit more money this time to get the megaworks speakers. These speakers sound great, better than many i have ever heard and with a THX certification they BETTER! Also they can get extremely loud without any distortion. Also the bass bumps really loud and can shake my entire house! Unfortunately these speakers overheat really easily. During some house parties when i use my speakers and they are turned up fairly loud (not even at their loudest) the bass will simply overheat and the speakers will begin to hiss, then cut out and not make any sound until you turn them off for 5-10 minutes to allow the bass to cool down. Even with a giant fan pointed directly at the back of the bass, it still overheated entirely too easily. This aspect of the speakers is unbelievably annoying, since they are meant to be turned up loud they should be able to handle the heat. Also the controller is CHEAP, mine stopped working and continually would turn off all the speakers and reset my bass and treble and volume settings. Somehow just recently it started working again! YAY i dont have to shell out 30 bucks for a new one! Anyways, these are amazing speakers for the price, but if you intend to turn them up loud for extended periods of time (AKA use them how they are intended to be used) you better look somewhere else.

good but..

Pros: The sound is really great! The bass is powerful like an earthquake. I can hear everything I want to hear - I am serious - actually I can hear a bit more..

Cons: The hiss is surprisingly loud. It spoils the whole outcome. It is much louder than the PC itself. If I new that before I wouldn't buy it. To be fair I have to tell that the speakers are aimed right against my ears as it intended to be and that makes the

Awesome sound quality

Pros: I recently purchased these speakers and was blown away by the sound. The satellite speakers are small with great highs and mids while the sub pounds out the bass. The floor facing sub really shakes. Comes with all the cables for the digital inputs as w

Cons: Lots of wires but not overly cumbersome. Somewhat high price $150 at Fry's, however, the THX sound quality is worth every penny.
