The bottom line: With an excellent subwoofer and two-way sats, this multimedia speaker system does justice to PC games and DVD sound.

An update to Klipsch's ProMedia 5.1, the ProMedia Ultra 5.1 incorporates several design refinements: a larger, retuned subwoofer; slicker satellites; a restyled command module; and updated crossovers. The Ultra 5.1 certainly delivers excellent performance, but we expect that from a system listed at $399.
The Ultra 5.1's wired command module is a cut above that of competing systems, featuring a highly readable numeric display and a large dial that allows you to set levels with precision. Unfortunately, since it lacks digital-audio inputs, onboard Dolby Digital decoding, and a wireless remote, this Klipsch isn't well suited for use with game consoles or home-theater installations.
To the Ultra 5.1's credit, its satellites and center speaker are two-way designs. Each features a 3-inch midbass driver and a 0.75-inch metal-polymer dome tweeter mounted in a Klipsch horn. The sub uses dual side-firing 8-inch drivers and houses amps for the entire system. The center and the sats each receive a very respectable 60 watts, while an even more impressive 170 watts goes to the subwoofer.
Connected to our PC's Creative Labs Audigy 2 Platinum EX sound card, the Ultra 5.1 proved its sonic proficiency. When we fired up Alice DeeJay's "Better Off Alone," the powerful sub drove home the thumping electronic kick drum with impressive force and tight precision, even at very loud volumes. Explosive battles in the Soldier of Fortune II PC game further established the sub's moxie, while the satellites' smooth, even quality staved off ear fatigue during long gaming sessions.
The "Fury" chapter of the Requiem for a Dream DVD demonstrated the Ultra 5.1's excellent imaging. A telephone's busy signal precisely circled the front and rear speakers. Dynamic transitions between sonic intensity levels were smooth, but a slightly brighter center speaker would have made the dialogue a little clearer.
Overall, the Ultra 5.1 has the best sub of any multimedia speaker system we've tested. That said, we prefer the airier-sounding sats, the deeper sound field, and the Dolby Digital command module of Logitech's comparably priced Z-680.

Do not buy them. They knew there was an issue and had a flat rate all ready to go for the board replacements. Now a different area burned up and want more money.

I've had my Klipsch pro media 4.1's for over 6 years
Pros: Crazy, room filling sound.
Not a problem in 6+ years, they work as well as when I bought them.
Cons: Cons? What cons?
I've tried the logitech's and the lot. Hands down, nothing is better for your pc.
My laptop is connected to my living room flat panel and I watch everything on it. The speakers fill the room with incredible sound. I looked for a second speaker set for another room and tried most of the top end speakers available, and compared everything to these.
You can't buy a better system for yout pc.
Klipsch would gladly resolve any issues if you buy through their retailers. They are a quality company.
Buy these! Forget the rest.

This is the best 5.1 audio system on the market today.
Pros: Excellent sound quality and well worth the money. You cannot find a better speaker system than the Klipsch Ultra 5.1s on the market today.
Cons: None! Very well worth the money!
Updated on Dec 6, 2009Used Promedia Ultra 5.1 speaker systems are still available for sale on eBay, ranging from $100 to $300. These speakers are definitely of higher quality than the Logitech 5.1 speakers on the market today.

Great product, no issues after 4 years
Pros: Ease of set up, tuneability that works well with a high quality sound card, mute colors that blend in well with the environment
Cons: The lack of an adjustable foot that can be turned for different mounting position. Should come with a surge protector built in.

Amazing. It?s a Bliss! The Sound is purely Astonishing!
Pros: -Super ideal for a home theater if equipped with a top soundcard
-Super dazzling highs with crisp sound equipped with powerful lows coming from the Base
-Unmatchable with anything I?ve ever seen
Cons: Neighbors complaining about very loud base
These speakers produce a sound that you don?t normally get to hear unless you in a studio with top professional equipments. They are perfect almost for anything you may think of. I?m not sure about some of you who complain about the reliability of this system, I have had mine for about 4 years blasting music almost everyday, enjoying the system to its fullest. I have never even encountered the slightest problem and i doubt i would face any issues.

AMAZING sound... for 1.5 hours
Pros: Incredibly high quality sound, reasonable price given sound quality
Cons: Amp died after 1.5 hours of use.
This experience has been a colossal disappointment. In my mind, Klipsch has always been the pinnacle of audio quality. It would appear that recently they have let that reputation slip, which is very unfortunate. Until this experience, I have been a huge backer of Klipsch products, but I can no longer support them given this radical drop in quality. Under other circumstances, I would have taken this speaker set back, gotten an exchange, and resumed listening, but given what I read, I simply cannot chance getting stuck with a set of expensive speakers which will very likely need to be sent back for warranty work, with me paying the expensive shipping costs.
I decided to go with the only competing speaker system I have been able to find; the Logitech Z5500. Easily equal in quality in from my tests thus far.
I am am giving the ProMedia Ultra 5.1 a rating of 5 (Average), due to the quality of the components used. Any product which runs for 1.5 hours before dying would get a 1, but the sound quality easily deserves a 10, so I'm putting my vote right in the middle.

Great sound, Modern styling, Worth it
Pros: Sound, Style, Further in review...
Cons: Well the only real cons are the lack of features and the sub is a little overpowering at times.
P.S. I am using the built-in 8.1 surround in my Gigabyte N-force 4 ultra motherboard and it still sounds great i am planning to get a goo sound card but i need to save up. im not going cheap.
For the people with problems get them at London Drugs If you run into any problems that are not related to people Cranking them they will replace them within a max of 3 days no holds barred and i do beleive that Klipsch has solved the problem.

Excellent speakers, flaky amp - BEWARE!!!
Pros: Superb sound!
Cons: Amp failure rate excessive - terrible Klipsch support
Am disgusted to have spent several hundreds of dollars on a system with a known fault that Klipsch chooses to ignore (well, after the amp goes walkabout, Klipsch will repair or sell you a replacement amp for $90 plus shipping (and a three week to two month wait), so you can cross your fingers and HOPE it doesn't quit AGAIN - No thanks... no more $$$ to Klipsch)... Going to buy a Logitech Z5500 - BUYER BEWARE!!!!

Your ears will love these babies
Pros: good quality on high volume
Cons: must have a really good sound card
out of 63 user reviews
short-lived blissful audio experience
Pros: Tight bass, non-shrill/piercing treble, powerful sound
Cons: Short-lived, cheap-looking control module, no digital decoder
The sound quality of these babies is simply excellent (a bit lacking in the details department, but still very good nonetheless). Base is tight and not too boomy or overpowering, treble and mid-range very well pronounced, dual side-firing 8" subwoofer does excellent job at producing rumbles and rattling windows and even doors and walls, and smart looking satellites (when you take the grills off).
BUT...
I have been warned by users before me, but i just couldnt resist the temptation of excellent sound quality. Now I am paying the price of my curiosity. The amp blew out last night, leaving only very small, muffled sound. And I have only purchased the set 3 months ago. All this, after paying nearly $300 for the speakers and an additional $90 for an external digital decoding soundcard for my laptop, bring my rating of this product to "poor". Klipsch shouldve done a better job at producing more long-lasting amps, especially since this problem is now known to inflict most (if not all) of Promedia Ultra 5.1s. Isnt that what R&D is for? Really, with the high prevalence of such problem, this item should be recalled and announced "defective".
I emailed Klipsch' customer service this morning and am still waiting for their response. I have read in another review forum that they at least have friendly, well-informed folks to address this matter and are quick in mailing a pre-paid return shipping form and even replacing the unit, but I have yet to experience that. We'll see.

Beautiful sound that never lasts
Pros: Sound is open and wonderfully full
Cons: Amplifier stinks - and just goes boom every 6 mo
Sadly, because I love the Klipsch sound overall, I'd have to recommend that no one take these home unless they really don't expect more than a year or two service at most.
If you read up on the issues with Klipsch subwoofers on the web (with their built in amps) I think you'll find a disturbing trend, in that I am not alone in these problems.
Great speakers - but a horrible and pathetically short lived amplifier ruin the experience.

unbelievable sound! monstrous sub!!
Pros: monstorous dual driver subwoofer(VERY loud might i add); crystal clear highs; decent mids; cool control module; sexy styling.... too much to list lol
Cons: pricey ;doesnt include wall mounting brackets 4 the rear surrounds; a little tweaking of the sound card required to get the best sound(took me ten minutes); thats really it and they're minor
i hooked them up in ten minutes.
the highs r crystal clear.(after a little tweeking of the sound card)
i've read a lot of reviews that the subwoofer blows after a while. i havent had ne problem. the amp gets pretty warm though. that might be a problem eventually , but i highly doubt it.
the control pod is very easy to use.
VERY VERY LOUD!!!!!! these speakers r so loud my roomate could fell the bass reverberate through the walls three rooms down the hall. he said he could feel it in his chest!!! yes, they're that loud!!!!
also, these speakers sound so good that you can hear things u never could have imagined hearing before.
i recommend that if you're willing to spend a decent amount of dough on pc speakers this is the way to go!!!!

If you have the money, it just doesn't get any better then this
Pros: Awsome sound, will not bottom out, Best speakers you'll buy
Cons: The price tag
While there is not digital input on the system, anyone with commone sense understands that once the signal leaves the reciver to the speakers it is turned into an analog signal. Not to mention digital only takes a select sample of audio while Analog sends the entire wavelength.
However this system is simple fantastic, you'll never hear any distortion in the sound regaurdless of volume. If you have the money, and an ear to really hear the perfection of this system you will love it.

It's a real pleasure listening to music coming out of my computer now!
Pros: Rich sound, easy, fast and perfectly functional controls (designed by somebody who actually listens to sounds coming out of computer speakers?)
Cons: big, a bit ugly (but not as predecesors of these, which were disturbingly big & ugly)
I used to have Logitech Z-680. For two years. I thought they were very good and I was really happy with them. Then the volume button gave up and I exchanged them for what was newer, and so I thought would be a better product: Z-5500.
I had to return these without even trying the sound. Yes, it seemed to be an upgrade to my original Z-680 but it was made of cheaper materials, speakers had wires coming out of them (no clips, as if Logitech new how far away I have my $400 speakers placed from computer), and no jack for headset anywhere to be found!?
So, reluctantly I had to buy the Klipsch Ultra 5.1 (reluctantly because I did not know whether they would sound as good as the Logitech, plus they were bigger and maybe a bit uglier)
But, I say, lucky me! The two are incomparable. They are worlds apart. I am not an audiophile, but I like good sound and the sound coming out of Klipsch is SUPERIOR. Period. There is simply no comparison.
While listening to the same songs, I hear sounds now I have never heard coming out of the Logitech (throughout the whole spectrum: base, middles and highs). Really, it sounds a bit like new music, new dimensions. I am not exaggerating.
I also tried to play UT just to see how they behave in a game. The same results: superior (I am not sure if I am biased at this point already, but it also seemed to me that the directional audio is much better defined with the Klipsch).
Also, the controls are significantly more intuitive and quicker to access, despite being simpler.
I am a happy camper.
What else to say? Only, remember why do you buy speakers in the first place! For all the impressive acronyms on the box, or for the sound?

worked...for 30 minutes
Pros: Clear treble
Cons: Mid is lacking
The mid range was very mediocre. Not impressed.
Listened to some mp3's for 30 minutes and it stopped working. Crisp treble, ok bass, next to no midrange. Why people rave so much about these, I'm really not sure. Maybe everyone's used to crap PC speakers that the heavy bass with these excites their ears? Klipsch has put out one shotty piece of hardware!
Logitech's I guess are better? I may go back to Best Buy and try to listen to them. Funny thing, now that I think of it. Best Buy's speaker display wasn't hooked up because people would apparently "blast the speakers too loudly". This seemed fishy to me at the time, and their utter lack of any willingness to let me listen to them before I bought them didn't help. BestBuy salesmen are about a 1/2 notch above car salesmen in my experience. Reading the reviews of these speakers breaking down, I would imagine the in store speakers were toast as well. Screw this prosumer PC speaker junk, just invest in real speakers and an amp. You'll be much happier in the long run. Don't believe the raving reviews. Compared to cheap JBL's or some similar prosumer stereo system speaker, these speakers are just mediocre in the overall scheme of things.

Excellent multimedia speakers; the very best in PC audio.
Pros: Great audio fidelity, powerful subwoofer.
Cons: None that I can think of.
I could not hear any distortion as I cranked the volume up on this system. Klipsch has done an amazing job with these speakers and everything about them screams professional. One another potential "knock" (if you see it as such) is that there are no digital input or output jacks. Besides that these truly the very best in multimedia audio.

Absolutely Amazing

Superb Speaker System!!!
Pros: These speakers are very well made in every sense. The design is awesome, the controls are well designed and easy to use. They are very powerful yet precisely crafted as to reproduce very fine/very exact sounds from tight bass to great mids and topped of
Cons: 500+ watts of power drawn, so the system basically requires its own outlet for peak performance. A little too powerful for small areas/rooms (i.e. will not sound as crisp in small settings). Sound field could have been a bit deeper.

Awesome Sound!!!
Pros: This is by far the loudest and cleanest system I've heard. I cranked the volume up to 80 (Highest setting) and the sound was still clear, I just had to turn the sub-woofer down some. My neighbors hate Doom 3 now!
Cons: No optical input, and no wireless remote.

Pros: Bid it off ebay for $180 to enhance the new projector and laptop combination, the result is quite impressive. When I added the M-audio sonic theater 7.1 USB external processor, it becomes a superb system and really starts to show Klipsch 's full potentia
Cons: Sure, lack of digital in, remote, built-in surround decoder would be down side, but with these days software decoder like winDVD6 or M-audio or Audigy 's hardware/software combination, you have to admire Klipsch's full potential as a speaker system for su

Pros: I haven't heard this system but I think it's safe to say that it sounds amazing.

Good sound, less feature
Pros: This is indeed a good sounding system. Better EQ than the promedia 5.1. I've had these for a while and they're a good, solid system.
Cons: That said, I just picked up a set of the Logitech Z5500 and w/o question the Logitech is a better value. Why? Sound quality: Both are good systems and the sound for the buck is significantly better than you could get from the HTIB side of the store.

Cons: The cost is way up there. You will be satisfied with the sound but at this price, I was expecting a little more features on the control pod. Also, the wires will drive you crazy. You might want to invest in some quality 5.1 surround sound THX cables or Mo

Pros: Great sound from Highs, Mids, and Lows. Subs are excellent quality, and it shakes the whole room when listening to DVD's. Klipsch crammed the quality of there legendery sound, into a 400$ system, which was well worth it. Sound to price ratio, is the well
