One word to describe the overall sound quality would be satisfactory. In every song, episode, or movie that I watched, the vocals were very clear and detailed. In lighter rock and acoustic songs, the instruments sounded very clear and had a certain amount of depth to them. On the other hand, when I tested these with somewhat heavier rock (not metal) songs, hip-hop, and some contemporary music, the bass was lacking (or if you are audio-savvy, "considerably" lacking) in the overall sound. I also noticed the percussion and the bass were drowning out the vocals or creating a slightly muddy feel that lasted throughout the entire song.
In the speakers, there are two knobs, one to adjust the volume and the other to adjust the tone. The tone adds the background effect of the instruments and the voice to the song as a whole. That being said, it seems to have no effect after it is adjusted past the midpoint, and when listening to other media such as interviews or late night talk shows, one may even have to turn it down because it seems to capture too much background noise and interferes with the voice.
When it comes to rating speakers that are priced below $50, the value for the price is one of the most important criteria for me. Although there are several criticisms that I have regarding the audio quality of the speakers, the "bang for the buck" factor is what clearly supersedes them and changes my overall rating from three to four stars. If you are purchasing these speakers if you are on a budget, or for simple and casual listening, the aforementioned criticisms will be negligible and you will enjoy these speakers for a very long time. However, if you listen to fast-paced music, consider yourself to be an audiophile, audio-savvy, audio crazed, or whatever you call it these days, these speakers may not fit your criteria.
To the few of you who may have a hard time deciding whether to purchase these speakers or pass, consider what your personal audio demands may be and (more importantly) how much you are willing to pay to obtain that quality. I will say this: For the lower end price range, these speakers have the best audio quality, the best build, and the best durability and longevity. It will go above and beyond to satisfy your needs for simple listening and entertainment. If you do not think these speakers will meet your needs, considering saving up for a more expensive unit, as these are truly the best speakers for those who are on a budget.
