Unless you're a serious gamer or a home-theater enthusiast, odds are you don't need elaborate multichannel desktop speakers. If you're content to rely on the spare combination of two speakers and a subwoofer, Logitech's $150 Z-2200 2.1-channel speaker system could turn even the most acoustically ambivalent person into an audiophile.

Each of the Z-2200's two 80-watt satellites includes a three-inch driver with an aluminum phase plug for cooler operation and more efficient dispersion of high frequencies than drivers with dust caps provide. The drivers are housed in an attractive, gray-metallic plastic enclosure that measures 7.0 by 4.3 by 6.0 inches (H, W, D) and features a removable dust cover. Our only gripe has to do with the hardwired speaker cables. Although the 82-inch cable is adequate for most desktop work areas, we would still appreciate the flexibility of quick-connect jacks to add longer cables, especially since the included speaker pedestals can be mounted on a wall.

The hardwired power cable on the 120-watt subwoofer is less of an irritant. Matching the design of the satellites, the subwoofer enclosure measures 11 by 11 by 15 inches (H, W, D) and boasts an 8-inch throw driver and a dual-flared port design for maximum bass output. Since this is a 2.1-channel system, connections are limited to left and right RCA satellite jacks and a 15-pin wired remote port. The 81-inch line-out cable is long enough to connect the sub to your PC without stretching. Logitech also throws in a color-coded adapter for connecting to PlayStation, Xbox, and GameCube consoles. The small wired remote plugs into the subwoofer and contains a large volume-control knob, a bass-level knob, a power button, and a handy headphone jack.

We connected the Z-2200s to a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Gamer LE sound card and loaded Pirates of the Caribbean, a THX-mastered DVD movie that we hoped would test the THX-certified speakers. Despite the lack of multichannel surround sound, we were impressed by what we heard (and felt). During the scene The Battle, cannon explosions shook the walls of our 10-by-12-foot office, while the satellites did a fine job of evenly broadcasting mid- and high-level sounds throughout the room, providing a virtual center-channel effect and a clarity that rivals that of most high-end systems.

Gameplay was equally impressive. We tested the Z-2200s while playing Halo: Combat Evolved with the bass set to three-quarter power, and we could feel the response with each explosion. Likewise, the satellites produced a fullness of sound that rocked the room. To test the speakers' music reproduction, we queued up the Ramones' "Howling at the Moon" track and cranked it way up--the way it is meant to be played. Let's just say that the boys from Queens never sounded so good. Even at the highest volume, the speakers sounded neither muddy nor distorted, though the neighbors got a little bent out of shape.

Despite our gripe with the hardwired cabling, we were completely blown away by the performance of the Z-2200s. For the money, Logitech's Z-2200 2.1-speaker system is hard to beat, whether you're into gaming, music, desktop theater, or annoying your neighbors.

Great sound quality with tons of bass and performance!

Pros: has tons of bass and performance. is able to handle all the bass u give out and has a great stereo sound if hooked up to a/v cable for surround sound. sound quality is crisp and a easy to use volume control and bass control for high low tune ablitity

Cons: after the volume is turned up oh so high the bass distorts and loss of bass power. stands that hold speakers up is flimsy and not very manageable.

Impressed me at first

Pros: - Very powerful subwoofer
- Relatively clear sound and bass
- Looks good (lol)

Cons: - The bass frequencies are too powerful compared to the tweeters (aka everything is too bassy)
- The bass knob set to minimum doesn't take away much of the bass either
- Its frequency response is 35Hz - simply not enough.

Review: The problem is the frequency response. Many music styles/genres have bass/sub-bass at around 25Hz even, which is no problem for loads of subs out there - this one is very limited.
It focuses on power too much - its subwoofer is strong (even too bassy) and nice that you can alter the bass output on it but I need to get rid of it and buy another kind with 20-25Hz freq response.
The funny thing is, one can find one for better price even.

So a the concusion for me is: Freq. response is much more important than Output Power.. My next sub will be weaker but more precise. NB: You would usually use its 10-15% of its capacity - 25% is the tops I ever used - was afraid of breaking the shaking windows under the load of some good drum&bass.

By the way I love its dimensions: its huge and impresive sub - which is also heavy..

Owned them for 3 and a half years, still going strong!

Pros: Powerful, booming bass; satellites really deliver.

Cons: None whatsoever!

Review: I bought these speakers as a birthday present for myself back in September of '04 and they've kept me happy so far! No problems with any hissing, static, or any other issues whatsoever. I also like the headphone jack on the remote...I know that's standard now, but the speakers I had prior to these did not have that, and my gaming is pretty much exclusively done using headphones. Overall, these speakers are great, as is everything else that comes from Logitech!

Amazing sound for the price.

Pros: Great bass response, crisp and clear sound from the satellites, very flat response - no EQ needed.

Cons: A slight occasional scratch noise from controller.

Review: I have read that these speakers do not last much longer than 6 months for others.. They have now lasted me about 4 years and still work like out of the box, aside from the occasional controller noise. I use them almost every day and often put them quite loud, without abuse they will last another 10 years easy. They sound remarkable for their price, only lacking midbass dynamics.. which can be expected from 3" drivers. Their response seems to be about 39Hz to 18kHz +-3dB to my ears, using signal generators. To the others complaining of hissing and cracking, that is merely a sound card driver problem. I had the same thing and a rollback fixed it right away. I would also note that my cousin has the Z-2300's, and I think my satellites are much more dynamic. A great set of 2.1 multimedia speakers indeed!

GREAT, for a few months!

Pros: great sound, great bass, great everything almost

Cons: the greatness only lasted a few months

Review: These speakers were great for a few months. I have terrific sound for my music, great loud bass for dance parties, great action when playing Halo for Xbox on it, great sound during movies. I loved my purchase, but then I started having problems hearing snaps, crackles and buzzing. I tried to deal with it for a few months but it got louder and less tolerable. So the speakers did not last and ultimately I gave them this low a rating because if the speakers cannot last more than a few months they are useless to me.

Having said that, I called Logitech. Turns out there is some hardware defect in the speakers and that alot of other customers have had the problem. Logitech was great and shipped me brand new z-2300 which are working fine for me now. I am thankful that I only had to spend 10 min on the phone with Logitech before I had my new speakers shipped to me. I will use my new speakers a little more and write a review for the z-2300s soon. Hope for the best.

Great Sound...While They Worked!!!

Pros: Great Value, Impressive Bass

Cons: Wired Connections Too Short For Some, Shorted Out After 6 Months

Review: While I absolutely loved the sound from these speakers, the fact that they cannot last for 6 months is sad, and according to other reviews, a disturbing trend.

That said, I have talked to Logitech Customer Service, and I really have to mention that I was treated with top-notch service. Their response to my problem was that they would ship me the new Z-2300 version of these speakers absolutely free, without even making me ship the old ones back for inspection. That's giving the customer the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully the Z-2300's will be everything the 2200's were, without the problems.

Close but not close enough

Pros: High power, size, remote with bass control and headphone.

Cons: Poorly designed amp. The amp emitts pops and clicks from the left speaker.

Review: Yes this system has the power to rock the house and the style, shape, size and pure power and sound are a plus not to mention THX, but where it all falls apart is in the amps poor design, After a while the left speaker started making popping and clicking noises and it does it even if the speakers are not connected to the soudcard and after switching the left and right speakers the noise was still there. After researching this problem on the Internet I started seeing many reviewers having the same problem with the left speaker only. I must turn the speakers off when not using them or play them at a level where I can not hear the noise. I really like these speakers, but I can not take the noise that comes the left speaker anylonger.

Pros: When I first got the speakers and figured out how get them going they where great. And I recommed them earlyer, but now...

Cons: Four months later...cracking and hiss from skeekers when nothing is moving on computer. A short in the conection to the subwoofer. Under warranty they say I will be getting new speakers. New Z-2300's we will see how they go next.
