The surging popularity of MP3 music, video games, and computer-based DVD drives has spurred demand for high-quality multimedia speaker systems. One such product is Logitech's flagship Z-680, which comprises four identical satellites, a center speaker, and a ported subwoofer. Although the Z-680 was designed for PCs and game consoles, its solid build, standard speaker-wire connectors, and wall-mountable stands make the kit a candidate for small home theaters, as well. But note that the Z-680 costs more than many HTIBs.

Unlike much of the competition, the Z-680 comes with an external command module/preamp that serves as a kind of mini A/V receiver. It handles Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS processing, but since our Creative Labs Audigy 2 Platinum EX sound card includes a Dolby Digital decoder, the Z-680's processor was more of a convenience than a necessity for us. Just like the remote, the panel has straightforward controls with which you adjust levels and settings, as well as select from up to four audio sources. Unfortunately, we had to place the module so close to us that its 8.5-inch height obscured a slice of our computer monitor; increasing the distance made the two-line, blue-backlit LCD too hard to read.

Unlike some competitors' speakers, the Z-680's satellites and center aren't two-way, instead offering a single 3-inch driver mounted in a vented cabinet, but the system's sound doesn't suffer. The sub has a direct-firing 8-inch driver. Logitech's subwoofer-based amplifier has plenty of juice, delivering 188 watts to the sub, 62 watts to each sat, and 69 watts to the center.

We started our listening tests by playing Quake III. The satellites' accurate imaging helped us track enemies, and explosions pounded so hard that we had to lower the sub's level. When we fired up the Requiem for a Dream DVD, the soundstage had truly excellent depth, the surrounds integrated seamlessly, and center-speaker dialogue was clear.

On the negative side, the subwoofer sometimes came across as slightly boomy, particularly with dynamic music. Klipsch's ProMedia ensembles have tighter subs, but Klipsch sats typically don't sound as natural as the Z-680's. Despite its few imperfections, the Z-680 is a superlative multimedia speaker system.

Awesome system - Still working strong

Pros: Awesome sound, no distortion, very reliable and easily controlled.

Cons: ould have more inputs.

Review: I've been using this system, bought secondhand, for about 2 years and it is excellent. I have had zero problems and it can really fill a room with great sound. I would recommend this system to anyone who can get ahold of it!

Sound great for a little while

Pros: powerfull sound easy to use

Cons: Poor longevity/poor customer service

Review: I have had this set up for a little over three years. I baught them because I had freinds with the same set up and the sound was excellent at first. The amplifiers apperently don't last very long and when you call Logitech, they want you to spend another 400.00 dollars on their latest and greatest. They are disposable and the customer service leaves much to be desired.

Great Speakers

Pros: Love the four suround & the mid rage

Cons: Had problems with the Console, Could have a bigger Subwoofer

Review: The Logitech Z-680 sounds better than the Z-5500 speakers, Even though the sub woffer is smaller than the Z-5500 sub woffer. If you can get this speaker system at a fear price get it. I have both Z-680 and Z-5500 so thats the way I can tell which one sounds better than the other. They are both good systems.
I tried the Z-680 system out as a home theatre system on my Stero TV, And it sounds good had to get and adapter from Logitech. But mainly it is for one off my computer Systems.

Great! Even has Superior Optical Input!

Pros: Many settings, althogh 6 channel direct is best... great sound, nice bass

Cons: control box needs to be within 5 feet of woofer

Review: This multimedia solution is fantastic. The sound is great! I have owned my system since summer of 2003. I use it with my PC, but I also like to kick out some massive audio power by hooking up the Playstation 2 via optical cable. The sound is amazing; optic fiber pwns the competition. Great bass, great sound, I definitely recommend. Hiss is not a problem by the way.

Wonderful system

Pros: Great sound, powerful bass

Cons: There is a slightly noticable hiss

Review: I returned the main control unit, they sent me a new one because the hiss, or white noise as they called it was loud. The new unit made it quiter. Must have 5.1 sound card, Audigy Z is fine for this, though any will do. Wonderful system.

Unrivaled Performance, Functions and Quality!

Pros: For the price, you can't buy a better 5.1 multimedia system!

Cons: What's there not to like?

Review: Who ever has a complaint about this surround system is probably a multimedia novice.

I've owned my Logitech Z-680's for nearly two years now and I am the envy of who ever comes over and hear them.

Configured with my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX external USB sound card, I was able to integrate my PC (6 channel direct), DVD (Coax), TV (via sound card line out), VCR (sound card line out), headphones (headphone jack) and portable media (front mini plug) simultaneously. I'm not a gamer but there is an optical connection that I can use some day as well.

I also found satellite speaker stands which clamps directly onto the 680's speaker stands. I'm able to securely raise the satellites as high as 47" and place them into a true 5.1 setup.

The results are stunning. Configured correctly, the Z-680 sounds as good, if not better than most speakers out there costing 4 times as much.

I've auditioned Bose, Creative Lab, Altec Lansing, Klipsch and many more systems. The Logitech Z-680 was my ear's choice over all of them!

Pros: I've traveled over 10,000 miles and they sound like new

Cons: the cord between woofer and controler to short.

Review: you'd be surprised how well they work outside. I used 2 100foot 16-2 exstendion cords and cut one in half (2-50foot) to space the speekers

Great sound at an affordable price.

Pros: The crisp sound and booming bass are well worth the price.

Cons: Wires, wires, wires, a wireless option or converter would be ideal.

Review: I was given some birthday money for the sole purpose of dressing up my XBOX gameroom - the inlaws wanted me to take a break and enjoy myself. Anyway, this system added a lot to the room and works great in conjunction with my sound mat. I had to buy extender cables for the rear speakers (not expensive) but overall, this wasn't a bad investment. I just wish there were less wires to deal with. I give it a B++

Pros: Very clear sound

Cons: Bass almost excellent

Review: I truly recommend this 5.1 system to a videogame player, although you can use it as a home theater with your movies with DTS and Dolby Digital sound, I feel that the bass could sound a lot better for 180 W.

Overall, go and get it, don’t hesitate, plus is not that expensive.

A Worthy Component for PC and Home Theatre

Review: I was looking for speakers for my home theater / pc and these fit the bill to a t. O have a Hercules game theater xp decoder on 1.7 gh generic pc. I have my nvida 9700 card with dvd output to my zenith tv. The tv is the weak link in my current entertainment system. Right out of the box I plug these bad boys in and after a little tweaking in placement I have a thx sound system that would make George Lucas cream his pantz. Easy set up my only complaint is that since I have place my sub woofer back behind my couches away from the pc’s I cannot find a fiber connection that will reach it so I have to use the rca cable. It still sounds great. Movies MP3’s are great. The TV output is ok depending upon the signal HBO SHOW ect sound great while WCI and smaller stations sound kind of poor.

Dead set right outta the box

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purposely bought the logitechs over the Klipsch Promedia 5.1s because I've read all the problems with the Klipsch BASH amps crapping out. Many people are on their 3rd to 5th sets! Just look at the klipsch website. Anyway, I buy the logitechs. Dead amp right outta the box. My two front channels are dead. The speakers work fine when connected to the rear channels, but the front channels are non-functioning. I don't know what to say. Klipsch and Logitech are selling $400 systems that are built like $4 systems. It's a shame and a disgrace, in my opinion. Sure, they sound GREAT - *when* they *happen* to work. My advice to you, the reader: pass on both systems and wait until the electronics in these high-wattage PC sound systems "mature." Then you should be able to spend $400 on something that will actually WORK instead of crapping out.

The All Wonder Speakers!

Pros:

Cons:

For as low as $250 you receive a system that outperforms most $1000 dollar systems. 500 watts continuous power and a peak of 1000 watts. The only other worthy speakers in its class are the Klipsch Promedia 5.1 speakers which aren't nearly as good and are created with a defect that causes them to stop working after a couple months! The definite choice is clear, the Z-680 speakers are clear and crisp and better than anything you can get for the price.

The Best Speakers...Ever

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the greatest speakers I have ever heard. I just recently tested them at my friends house for a good 3 hours. Not only that but I chose them to be my speakers for my order of my Area 51 and currently await it's arrival. They are slightly cheaper than the Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 but the sound is just out of this world. I also love the way you can hang them off the wall. It helps for someone like me who craves desk space. The control unit is easy to read and full of options. I love the big knob especially at night, trying to fumble to boost the volume while playing my games. These speakers can only be described as one thing, PURE BLISS. Logitech has amazed me with their Mice, Keyboards, and Joysticks. And now they have blown me away with their speakers.

I have had mine now for over a month and I don't regret it at all. Incredible sound and features for the price

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After owning z560s for my computer for the past year, I had to buy the z680s for the xbox/tv the moment I heard they were out. Never regretted it in the slightest. The bass is enough to make every book in your bookshelves rattle, (thats a good thing :), and the satelites are excellent at picking up the treble and mid as well. The system has a stereo input, 6 channel input, an optical AND a digital coax input... as well as a wireless remote. No one can believe the price of the system after hearing them... buy them, you WON'T regret it, garanteed. Oh, and the klipsch fan... I'd like to hear the 2 8 inch subs of the promedia 5.1s reach that of the z680s... Oh, one extra comment, the dolby prologic effects rock for music! I'd give this two thumbs up if I could... I've had them quite a while now btw

Truly outstanding sound.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought the Z-560's for my computer, and loved them so much it was a no-brainer to pick up the 680's for my home theater. These speakers are so good I expect to be passing them on to my children many years from now. I simply can't see ever upgrading from here. One small gripe - you can't see the blue LED readout on the control unless you are positioned directly in front of it. I encourage all to google "z-680 review" and read what the pro reviewers say. You won't be disappointed! Highest recommendation.

constant hiss

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I would love these speakers, if it were not for a constant hiss from all of the speakers. Even with the volume turned all the way down, the hiss remains.

Great Sound And Great Versatility

Pros:

Cons:

Review: These speakers pump out some of the loudest and best sounds that I have heard. The bass is truely baning and the sound from the speakers is crystal clear even when cranked pretty heigh. I use these speakers for my Computer and Xbox and they can even be hooked up to a DVD player all at the same time! These speakers are a MUST for PC gamers!!!

Great Speakers!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Wow, I'm so lucky I stumbled upon these speakers!! I already have been through a set of Klipsch, won't ever buy there product again. I've had a Cambridge soundworks system too. I was at the local retailer, and going to buy the Megaworks 510d, but they were out of stock. I saw these z680's and gambled on them. I've never bought a Logitech product. Thank you for my luck these spkrs kick a**, and great asthetics too! Just upgrade the spkr wire.

A must for the game lovers with top of the line systems!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The speakers give out inpecable sound and the sub is almost crisper than my bose subwoofer for my surround on my tv. The effects are a bit worthless, but the overall package is unbeatable!

Buy 16 guage speaker cables!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The speakers are excellent. You must buy 16 guage speaker wire with the Z-680's, the difference is very noticeable. I wish the instructions told you what the different "effects" were designed for. I have played with them and are all very different sounding.
