X-230 2.1 Speaker System

Entered CNET Catalog: 08/06/2004

SKU: 0097855021595

Manufacturer: Logitech Inc.

Manufacturer description

Crank up the audio on your PC with this 2.1 speaker system and enjoy clean, crisp, consistent sound from your games, music, and more. The Logitech X-230's high-tech subwoofer adjusts itself dynamically to deliver distortion-free bass. And the two wall-mountable satellite speakers use Logitech's patented FDD2 technology to eliminate the uneven sound response created by conventional dual-driver designs. The result: a clear, uniform sound field without the "hot spots" and inconsistency of other dual-driver satellites.

Clear and Powerful desktop speaker system

Pros: What is best about these speaker is what you expect... the sound. The sound is clear and the bass is clean. You can easily play music in one room and listen in the next The styling of these speakers is quite nice and they are not oversized.

Cons: An easier to access bass level knob would have been beneficial. The master volume is located on the right hand speaker. A bass adjustment would have been nice there as well.

Review: I you are looking for a great set of desktop speakers that put out great sound, I would highly recommend these. I purchased these from newegg on sale. You can't beat the value.

Great Sound, Great Price!

Pros: Good sound, Good design, Great Price.

Cons: Not too powerful, Bass not to tight.

Review: I love how good speakers sound, and im the type of guy that hates bad sound. If you want cheap speakers for your PC, but a really nice and decent sound, you wont be dissapointed. My father has the bose 2.1 system and he heard this speakers and thought, why spend so much when you can get great sound (not as great as bose of course) for 5 times less!

The only problem is that on my speakers, when you turn the volume it makes a sound like some dirt inside the connections or something.

Amazingly priced, amazing quality.

Pros: I have had this system for almost 4 years. Great sound, small parts. This set is amazing, if it ever breaks I will defenitly get another one. Low price, doesnt skimp on the sound at all.

Cons: None. This system is perfect.

Review: This product is awesome for just about anyone looking for great sound quality, performance, and a great flashy looking sound system for their pc's.

Best Budget Speakers Available

Pros: Great Price, modern / good looking, very good sound quality, somewhat small, powerful.

Cons: Sound quality can't stand up to the top of the line z-2300 (but for 1/4 the price, who cares), sub volume control is on the sub; not a remote

Review: I read somewhere that these were the best 2.1 computer speakers available for under $40. I bought them for $30 and for the money they sound incredible, almost as good as my floor standing Sony's in the same room.

great speakers...great price...subwoofer is the issue

Pros: great sound quality
look really good
no cracking of sound and are over 2 years old
outstanding base if you tweak through media player (subwoofer maxed out while listening to music and still no cracking )

Cons: subwoofer control is in back...real nuisance.
no controller to access the subwoofer
if you insert headphones into jack, u have to lower the volume from the computer , if u don?t , ur headphones will explode

Review: Would definitely recommend to a friend. Still use these speakers ever since getting them. Planning on buy one with remote functionality

Best smooth sounding 2.1 speaker system.

Pros: - Clear sound.
- Strong Bass.
- Clear at highs and lows.
- Lightweight and easy to move.
- Easy to use with ipods (has a 3.5 mm connector).
- Extremely durable and good looking.

Cons: -Even though it could be a plus, the bass is too strong.

Review: If you buy this system then you better be ok with some pretty powerful bass. This small subwoofer packs a strong punch. If this system finds its way into your home, then I believe that you will be very satisfied!

For the size and price and size I couldn't be happier.

Pros: The bass is surprisingly loud for the wattage.

Cons: Wire length limits cofiguration capabilities.

Review: The sound blew me away when I turned it on, but I should admit I have my sub facing to underneath my desk which I think helps the bass. The one con is the cable setup has all the wires including the sub go to one of the speakers so everything needs to stay pretty closely contained.

Great Speakers

Pros: Good sound, good base

Cons: Could be a little better

Review: 9 out of 10 for me. These speakers do it all! Great base, much louder than necessary! (2/3 of of the way turned up it can be heard all the way through my two story house). These are perfect for anybody! The X-530's are perfect, however, if you are an audiophile/hardcore gamer. Logitech makes great products! I am more than satisfied!

Great speakers for the money

Pros: Sound pretty good, look cool, small subwoofer is surprisingly powerful, Low price. (I got mine on buy.com for 21 bucks.)

Cons: The thin fabric on the speaker cones feels kinda delicate. The sattalite speakers are tall and narrow so they tip over easily.

May the force be with you!

Pros: Awsome Looking Speakers; Great Sound; Bass That'll Make Your House Jump

Cons: Only 2 Speakers

Review: I love these speakers. Why? Not only do I love Logitech but these speakers give a whallop of 2.1 sound! I would love to put these in 7.1 surround (With a bigger base).

These are 2.1 surround sound so we'll stick with 2.1. These speakers give high quality sound without the need of an expensive sound card.

The base is pumping! Make your house jump! I wouldn't mind putting this thing in my car - jeez.

This set of speakers is "THE BANG FOR A BUCK"!

Speakers Ok for price

Pros: okay bass alright sound

Cons: After while Bass becomes loose and just like air

Review: speakers are good for price i must admit. The bass is good for the first few months then they tend to distort and you tend to hear a airy noice coming from the air tube. But overall a average and good speaker system considering the price.

After Some Tweaking, Sound I Can Live With

Pros: Serious Bang for the Buck ( especially after tweaking), Nice Styling

Cons: Overly Aggressive Bass Can Overshadow set's Good Qualities

Review: Accepting that they would act as simply a stop-gap measure til I found a good price for what I originally sought ( no good sales for the Logitech z-2300 or Creative I-trigue L3800 at the local stores), I had bought the x-230 set a few days ago.

I wanted to like these speakers...

...nice styling, spacious sound...

...but, even with the bass module turned all the way down, they were far too boomy.

Fileaudiophile's recommendations ( be sure to read his review!) were essential towards my finally discovering solutions to getting (relatively) good sound out of X-230's:

Currently, I have both My Windows Media and i-Tunes equalizers at the settings F/A suggested.

The bass module now resides under the desk. It's at it's minimal setting and turned so that it's port is firing into carpet.

Here, the result is a smooth non-obtrusive...and still quite potent... bass that let's the satellites show off their best qualities.

Again; thanks for the tips, Fileaudiophile.

Crystal Tones, Deep base = Love at first sound

Pros: Can hang from wall or sit on desktop. Thick protective wires, Excellent sound

Cons: Now I have to re-record hundreds of MP3 with over 220kbps because music imperfections can be heard. Flat notes sound flat and you want to stab your ears out!!!

Review: First my props to CNET, because this is where I first researched which speakers to buy. Thank you!

Second: Notice in the cons the three exclaimation marks. I thought my previous CA speakers were very good, and they were better than the previous coffee can sounding ones. These do not have frail wires; that is for better electrical conduction. They are beautifully designed and elegant as pictured. Separate volume controls for the subwoofer and the satalites. I was pleasantly suprised to see that the base swivles so I can mount these on the wall. But seriously I have to record hundreds of songs over again on MP3 because of the music definition clairity. I began recording a while ago with 320kbps quality so that is good, but everything less than original recording of 128kbps is horrid. Converting from a lower to a higher kbps just makes things worse. The highest 320kbps sounds spectacular the converted formats with clipped high notes and flat bass makes you want to go "Oedipus Rex" on your ears!!!
The price was good, $55 tax incl. at Office Depot, but still worth it, no regrets. Get them.

Great Speakers for the price

Pros: Deep bass sound that's compatible with i-pod

Cons: None so far

Review: I bought these speakers from "the geek squad" at Best Buy and spoke to a young man that listened to my concerns, especially the price, and he showed me these, then had me listen to them. I couldn't believe the sound quality at this price. He noted that he had the same pair and recently upgraded to 5.1 speakers (I forget the brand) and said that he actually prefers his old X-230's. He did mention that it was imperative to get the Sub-Wolfer (included)as not to put too much stress on the 2 peripheral speakers.

I would totally recommend these speakers at any price!!

Best value imaginable

Pros: VERY good sound for the price

Cons: The desktop portion is bigger than the Bose I compared

Review: I did a side by side comparison of these speakers with the Bose Companion3 2.1 speakers. I could not differentiate the sound quality at high or low volumes or with classical music vs rock music. The Bose may have had a slight advantage in the midrange. I liked how small the Bose speakers were, so I was leaning towards them before I looked at the price. WHAT!? $250 vs $50 for the Logitech? No brainer. I'm listening toe the X230's as I write this...

The Best Value

Pros: Energy efficient, theatre quality audio

Cons: No surround limits audio range

Review: When I decided it was time to upgrade to a new PC system that would reduce energy cost, I decided to replace everything but the keyboard/mouse/printer/modem.

The choice for this unit was a very lucky choice, since I did not experience the audio before plugging it in.

I am pleased that I chose a monitor with no built-in speakers because this is the perfect solution.

The wattage is very energy friendly, the volume is perfect for condo living and the color is a compliment to my new system, being that the tower and the monitor both match the speakers.

There is a headphone port in the front right speaker as well as a volume and a seperate volume on the subwoofer as well.

When watching a DVD, this system delivers the theatre experience, where if I do not have a bag of popcorn, I feel something is missing.

With the focus on energy efficiency these days, it's comforting to know that Logitech has provided the perfect solution to keep the energy bills down.

Look look look look

Pros: Great base, cool looking, slim, cheap on ebay $26

Cons: no major cons

Review: I have heard hundreds of 100 dollar speakers which were either border line, not loud enoughf, fuzzy or just didn't quite work. But when I found the Logitech x 230 speakers I went to heaven... with an amazing base and loud but not fuzzy speaker when turned up. The Logitech feature a small compact desighn that works and is slim and looks like you spent 200 big ones on it .

OK new out of the box, BAD after time

Pros: Above Average sound when new,

Cons: Bass gives out, Flimsy wooden base design,

Review: The X-230 gives above average sound and gives you the bang for your buck, but I've noticed after a couple weeks of heavy bass use, the bass becomes loose and just sounds like air from the tube. The two satellite drivers deliver clear sound, but not the best. This system could use some room for improvement, I think Logitech should take this item of the shelves it's that bad. I am returning these pieces of junk and buying the Bose Companion 3 system.

Great deal and value!

Pros: Sound clarity, bass

Cons: Styling could be updated to compete with something like the Sound Sticks

Review: Great speakers at this price! When I first saw the reviews, I was a skeptic since Logitech primarily makes mice, keyboards but not speakers really. When I tried then, they really blew me away especially at this price. The bass really booms and the midrange and treble are extremely clear for speakers of this size. Get these!!! I bought mine at a local store given the high shipping prices online generally.

Biggest BANG for your Buck!

Pros: Unbelievable sound out of inexpensive speakers!

Cons: Buzzy bass in subwoof when cranked too high, no biggie

Review: Plugged these babies in and WOW! All the other reviews were right on -- I spent $31 on these, INCLUDING shipping, from UBID and I'm one happy camper. I played several songs and the sound was very nice; good bass, mid-range and treble. I cranked the subwoofer up to about 7 (not 11) and it did buzz a bit, but hey, these aren't Klipsch La Scala's right? So, I cranked it back down to 5, and it was just right. I then played a little Far Cry, and when I first touched off the M-14, I was SHOCKED at the roar of the gun -- I was THERE!! Now I truly know what "immersive" means. Thanks, logitech!!

The music sounds great, the price looks great!

Pros: Very strong sound, Immersive base, sharp sound.

Cons: Power switch on speaker can be difficult to use

Review: The Logitech X-230 speakers are amazing. The sound is clear, sharp and immersive with great base. The speakers units are light and stylish while still delivering excellent sound and power. The sub woofer has an independant volum control so you won't blast the neighbours late at night. The only downside is because the speakers are so light, you have to put your hand around the speaker to puch the power button. A very minor thing and barely worth mentioning. Overall, great quality system, great price and most importantly, great sound.

excellent speakers, great value

Pros: sound clarity, frequency range, price

Cons: mini-towers need weighted bases

Review: These speakers sound leaps and bounds better than the 3-year-old Altec Lansing set I'm now shuffling to my spare tv/dvd. Crisp highs, strong midrange, and deep precise bass. More volume than I'll ever need.

My only gripe is that the mini-towers are a bit wobbly on my desk due to their high center of gravity and plastic bases. It's a very small concern considering all the positives.

I am extremely pleased with this purchase and would recommend these speakers to anyone!

Can't imagine how thses things can only cost about $25

Pros: Great sound, dirt cheap

Cons: I refuse to complain at this price point. They are FANTASTIC!!!

Review: The speakers have a great crisp sound that has a full range. Even at relatively high volume I'm still impressed. At extremely high volume there is a little distortion and the bass cracks a bit, but I never have it that high. These are incredible PC speakers, but if you want a bass pounding heart thumping experience upgrade from PC speakers.

With some EQ, surprising sound in a small package

Pros: Price is right, size is small and sound is better than anything in the price point

Cons: EQ is needed - weak low mids and 100Hz is muddy

Review: In a unique setup, this model is CAPABLE of sounding better than it does out of the box, but for this incredibly low price you can't really be too picky. With proper placement of the subwoofer and a little positioning the audio image is not distorted nor does it clip the amp with extended low frequencies. The 100Hz response is a little too present and sloppy, but placing the sub on its side helped this as did use of the EQ in iTunes to warm up the mids in the 250Hz and 500Hz ranges as well as to reduce the 2K bite. For a budget set of speakers, you do get a lot for your money - if you dial them in correctly.

Excellent sound and well built

Pros: Very good bass response, Well Built, Headphone Jack on right speaker.

Cons: No Sub remote volume control, satellites aren't powerful enough.

Review: The X230's are my first 2.1 channel speaker setup, after putting up with standard Dell speakers for far too long. I like to listen to my music fairly loud, but don't have much space, so these suited my needs perfectly. On first using them, the difference between standard speakers was sublime. They look very smart next to a black Dell, and the sub is quite small, whilst still delivering outstanding bass that is punchy. Jazz music suits them especially as does hip-hop. The headphone jack is very convenient for late night usage.

However, after a few months, and a few parties, there is a noticeable distortion at mid-volume from the satellite speakers. It is more annoying than intrusive, although I have only myself to blame for pumping the volume up too much!

To sum them up, they are the best speakers to go for in the price range and will suit most peoples needs, offering superb value for money and great sound from a compact package.

Great value, sub too intense.

Pros: Overall, it sounds great. The price is unbeatable ($30-50). It will get as loud or as quiet as you need it to, while still sounding great. Sub has plenty of power.

Cons: Sub has too much power. With the sub turned all the way down, it is almost quiet enough. There seems to be a boost at about 50Hz also. I have to cut 50Hz by about 6dB to get it to sound right.

Best buy for the bucks!

Pros: Clean evenly matched sound

Cons: Can think of none

Review: I hooked these up to my IPOD and the sound easily filled my living/dining area. The bass and midrange are evenly matched, the bass doesn't overwhelm but definitely noticeable.
I've been listening to floor models at several stores and I'm glad I picked these. I was looking for the best speakers at no more then $50 and I found them. If you are on a budget these are for you and they are better then the stuff in the $99 range. Definitely better then the three satellite mini towers.
