"With some EQ, surprising sound in a small package"

by fileaudiophile on September 11, 2005

Pros: Price is right, size is small and sound is better than anything in the price point

Cons: EQ is needed - weak low mids and 100Hz is muddy

Summary: In a unique setup, this model is CAPABLE of sounding better than it does out of the box, but for this incredibly low price you can't really be too picky. With proper placement of the subwoofer and a little positioning the audio image is not distorted nor does it clip the amp with extended low frequencies. The 100Hz response is a little too present and sloppy, but placing the sub on its side helped this as did use of the EQ in iTunes to warm up the mids in the 250Hz and 500Hz ranges as well as to reduce the 2K bite. For a budget set of speakers, you do get a lot for your money - if you dial them in correctly.

Accepting that they would act as simply a stop-gap measure til I found a good price for what I originally sought ( no good sales for the Logitech z-2300 or Creative I-trigue L3800 at the local stores), I had bought the x-230 set a few days ago.

I wanted to like these speakers...

    ...nice styling, spacious sound...

...but, even with the bass module turned all the way down, they were far too boomy.

Fileaudiophile's recommendations were essential towards my finally discovering solutions to getting (relatively) good sound out of X-230's:

Currently, I have both My Windows Media and i-Tunes equalizers at the settings F/A suggested.

The bass module now resides under the desk. It's at it's minimal setting and turned so that it's port is firing into carpet.

Here, the result is a smooth non-obtrusive...and still quite potent... bass that let's the satellites show off their best qualities.

Again; thanks for the tips, Fileaudiophile. :)

I'm impressed that somebody actually managed to make an unbiased review on this set. Now I will probably consider these for my next purchase along with Logitech's Z4.

    Thanks a bunch mr!
