For a handheld with a GPS receiver and a large, 320x480-pixel display, the iQue is relatively light and compact, weighing 5.2 ounces and measuring 2.8 by 5 by 0.8 inches. The depth tapers slightly to about 0.5 inches, making the device a bit more pocketable.
![]() |
| Though pretty large for a PDA, the iQue makes up for its size with a roomy screen. |
![]() |
| A little wedgy: The iQue is thick at the top but tapers toward the bottom. |
The protective cover of most handhelds attaches to the top of the device, but on the iQue, the attachment moves to the bottom and gives its standard position to the flip-up GPS receiver. To start satellite acquisition, you turn on the unit and pop open the antenna, whose hinge lets you choose the best angle for reception.
The Palm launch and scroll buttons below the display are standard, but one of them is mapped (no pun intended) to switch between the GPS map-related screens. You zoom in and out of maps with the scrollwheel, and the Escape key lets you exit an application. Those two controls are on the left side, which is handy when your stylus hand is occupied.
![]() |
| Navigation options: The jog dial is great for zooming in on maps, and the Escape button backs you out of apps. |
![]() |
| The cradle is a bit heavy, but you can recharge the device without it. |
The iQue comes with a sturdy but heavy syncing cradle and an AC adapter, whose outlet prongs fold in to save space. We also appreciated the little AC jack on the bottom of the device, which enables you to leave the cradle at home when you travel. Another plus: the inclusion of the Palm Universal Connector on the bottom of the iQue provides for compatibility with a whole host of existing Palm add-ons, such as keyboards, adapters and sync cables.
Though Palm and Sony have moved to Intel and Texas Instruments chips, Garmin stuck with the traditional Motorola option for the iQue. But at 200MHz, the DragonBall MXL ARM 9 processor is no relic, and the iQue's Palm OS 5.2.1 and 32MB of RAM are similarly up-to-date. Additional storage--a must if you want to load large maps--is available via the Secure Digital/MultiMediaCard (SD/MMC) slot.
Clearly, the iQue's main attraction is its built-in GPS receiver, which takes advantage of the FAA and Department of Transportation's wide-area augmentation system (WAAS) to increase the accuracy of the GPS plotting. With 12 channels, this Garmin can connect to up to 12 satellites simultaneously, though only 4 are required for a 3D location fix. As we mentioned, the receiver flips up, and you can adjust the antenna to get the best reception.
To complement the receiver, Garmin provides a two-disc set of extensive maps. MapSource's detailed City Select North America 5.0 covers the United States and parts of Canada, including streets, parks, and waterways. Beyond simple navigation, the software also offers traffic directions and restrictions, as well as more than 5 million points of interest. You can install all the maps on your computer (they take up about 1.8GB) and download just what you need to your handheld. You can't load third-party maps such as Rand McNally StreetFinder.
![]() |
| Write on: The 320x480-pixel display has a virtual-Graffiti area. |
![]() |
| One for the road: You'll probably need spacious SD or MMC media to store your detailed maps. |
The iQue comes with a large software collection for use with the GPS and the maps. The programs are well integrated with the address-book and even date-book databases. When you select a contact's address in QueRoutes, the iQue will plot a course to that location. You can also attach a destination to a calendar entry to give yourself directions to your next meeting. Other applications let you plan trips stop by stop, record your route, calculate distances and travel times, and find points of interest such as banks, restaurants, theaters, and lodging.
In stark contrast to the powerful mapping tools, the iQue's other Palm programs are sparse. Aside from a decent audio application/MP3 player and the PowerOne calculator, the software CD contains little more than Palm Desktop 4.1, Palm Reader, and some third-party demos.
The iQue has a speedy 200MHz processor to handle the resource-intensive tasks of map zooming and redrawing. Nevertheless, the device paused occasionally while redrawing some complex urban areas. Palm OS 5.2.1 enables support for more system RAM; we suggest you supplement the internal 32MB with a 128MB SD card to make sure you have room for your maps.
Like Sony's larger CLIEs, the iQue has a spacious 320x480-pixel transflective screen that can produce 65,536 colors. We thought the display looked great indoors with the backlight on; map detail was crisp and clear down to the smallest icons. Viewing in direct sunlight with the backlight off returned similarly pleasing results and saved some juice--just don't blind yourself by holding the iQue at the wrong angle. Sound was also good and loud enough for listening to tunes comfortably even in the noisiest environments.

Looking good: Though slightly less colorful than a CLIE's screen, the iQue's display is bright and sharp.
The iQue was a bit poky getting its first satellite fix, taking about four minutes. Reconnecting was substantially faster at a minute or less when our location was open to the sky. The unit clung tenaciously to its signal as we schlepped around the San Francisco Bay Area, disconnecting only when we tarried too long under an overpass or between skyscrapers.
The iQue is also adept at calculating and giving directions. A smooth female voice announces how many miles you are from an upcoming turn, then repeats the turn command when you get within a few hundred feet. Though the screen tells you street names, the voice understandably doesn't: imagine a computer trying to pronounce Gough, Duboce, and Guerrero. If you stray off course, the iQue quickly finds a new route with which to guide you.
Unfortunately, the iQue has a glaring weakness: battery life. The gluttonous display and GPS receiver quickly sap power. For our test, we ran a movie in Kinoma Player with the screen brightness at 50 percent. After 2 hours, 11 minutes, the low-battery warning appeared, and the backlight automatically dimmed to about 10 percent. The device completely ran out of steam at the 3-hour mark. Performance will be a bit better with the GPS receiver as long as you minimize backlight use: one charge got us approximately 3 hours, 45 minutes of intermittent GPS activity. The iQue also has a battery-saving mode, in which the unit syncs with satellites as little as possible.

Verdict is still out on this one...
Pros: Compact enough to carry in your pocket
Cons: Very difficult to setup
1) You must have a DVD player in your PC to setup the Garmin iQue 3600--they do not offer CD-Rom or download support of the full system;
2) Installing maps is a nightmare -- first, they don't tell you that if you wanted to install all maps of the US, you need a 2 gig Secure Digital card--you might just get one or two cities on the SD card that comes pre-loaded;
3) To install maps, you need to click on individual cities across a region. Did it ever occur to Garmin that we might just want to install a few States? Other programs I've used allow you to select the states you want to install and you're done! It took me about 10 minutes to click on what seems like each county in the Northeast and that was followed by an hour worth of downloading and hot syncing.
3) The unit does not come with voice commands pre-loaded. I learned that the hard way and had to go back and "change voice" (not add, mind you, change the voice to get GPS prompts).
4) On my first attempt at hot syncing, the iQue recognized my user id and installed all the programs from my old palm 3 C. Garmin Tech Help cautioned me against using an old user id because old Palm programs "may not be compatible" and "may cause a malfunction."
Since everything seems to be working, I am not sure if it pays to go through the hours long setup that is required to reset the unit.
Now that the nightmare is seemingly over, the unit does have some cool features, like the ability to do a test run (simulating the actual route with voice prompts) so you get an idea of the route it plans to take you on which will allow you to make changes before you ever get on the road.
Note, that the iQue 3600 is a discontinued 2003 model.

Overall: Excellent for the Price
Pros: Outstanding Customer Service, Navigation, expandable memory, Palm familiarity
Cons: OS somewhat unstable at first, but problems have been corrected
Customer phone service is slow, but they are knowledgeable. I dropped my new unit shortly after I bought it and the Beam feature quit working. I happened to be in Kansas City (Garmin home office) on business and dropped it off on a Monday. I continued my trip and a "Brand New" unit was on my doorstep when I arrived at home on Thursday. No bickering, complaining, or interrogation. Newer unit is much more stable (always syncs and never resets).
Battery goes quick if you have screen brightness on high, but you can easily adjust it so you can easily see the screen and it lasts much longer.

Excellent all-in-one GPS solution
Pros: POI database is excellent; fast processor; nice screen; good mapping software
Cons: Occasional crashes; GPS sensitivity not comparable to state-of-the-art receivers
For those used to the Palm OS, there will be no surprises here; all the usual Palm core applications (date book, scheduler, etc.) are present.
As a GPS, the unit is more than up to the task. It ships with the Garmin City Select software. I have had a chance to compare CS with INav's much-touted iGuidance software, and I find it to be superior to iGuidance in most respects. The Points of Interest (POI) database (a very important consideration, IMO) contains over 5 million entries, which puts it at the front of the pack.
The routes it calculates are not always optimal, but no GPS is perfect in this regard.
My biggest gripe with this unit is the receiver's lack of sensitivity relative to more up-to-date technology available. The most sensitive GPS's on the market right now are based on the SiRF Star III chipset; the 3600 is based on a Garmin proprietary chipset. Consequently, if you are navigating in an "urban canyon" (an urban area with many large buildings to block GPS signals), it can be impossible to maintain a signal lock. (In such an area, a SiRF-based unit would have no difficulty). For my own needs (I live in the suburbs), this is not often an issue.
If you live in -- or frequently navigate in -- primarily dense downtown city areas, you might be better off looking for a more modern GPS receiver based on SiRF III. Otherwise, for the money, I think the 3600 is an excellent solution.

I've wanted this for some time, now I do and I LOVE IT. This is the BEST GPS FOR THE MONEY!!
Pros: Great navigation software, has good reception, easily read, VERY user friendly, cheaper than most other GPS, SLIM and portable!, has tons of features, couldn't say enough great things about this one.
Cons: There are some minor things nothing is perfect... Low lasting battery life (I use mine as GPS not palm pilot so it's always plugged into DC outlet), Sound needs to be louder (get a car kit with spkr!)

high marks for trying hard
Pros: great concept, looks and feels good
Cons: software conflicts, sensitive to moisture and shock
I have been using a palm zire pda and since I needed a gps I thought the pda upgrade would be a good idea... wrong. Software from my Zire will not sync to the software for my 3600. Another hour wait, Customer service tried hard for two hours (install, uninstall, beam, etc etc) but cannot help until I upgrade microsoft outlook so I can maybe use it as a conduit to transfer files from Zire to ique. Now I have data beamed onto my ique from Zire that cannot be accepted by ique software so i have to remove 4 weeks work from my ique and reinstall (first I have to install on a second computer to insure I have a protected backup) to sync my ique to the desktop software. Does it sound like my head is reeling?
In summary, although I like the unit, I have spent too mant hours troubleshooting problems. When I can get a Blackberry with a phone and GPS it will be the obvious hardware to use. I will eventually have explored the limitations of the ique and will use it avoiding minefields. Oh yeah, you CANNOT run Zire software on the same computer as a ique 3600! (gps software conflict) Recommend you buy a pda and an independant gps.
Have since been successful in configuring both zire and ique. Was not difficult but needed the right customer support rep.

Indispensible but unsupported
Pros: Great form factor for travelers
Cons: Garmin doesn't have their act together
I agree with the reviews, and would like to add the following specifics so a new owner doesn?t have to search in vain for answers to their questions:
Map Data: Way out of date. Maybe 1 in 50 Visitor Centers around the US was where the data showed. Many roads and attractions missing even though they?ve been around for years and years. Garmin says they update every 12-18 months so a new version should be out soon, but don?t expect everything to be up to date. Also, it?s best if you preview the calculated route before you head out, to avoid goofy routing at the end (dragging you through side streets instead of having you do a simple u-turn).
Support: Don?t bother. Website is very confusing when looking for program/data updates. FAQs worthless. Tech Support said they have NO INPUT to Engineering or the website contents so save your breath!
Car Kit: Mandatory. Get one for each vehicle if you swap often. I don?t like how easily the volume gets inadvertently changed whenever you go near the 12v plug/speaker. I?ve reduced the diameter of the knob with a Dremel and inserted a rubber friction piece to avoid this.
Searches: Comes up empty-handed on occasion for no good reason. After you?ve entered an address in the Address Book and asked for a location search, sometimes the street name has to be entered manually, although it appears on the street number field above.
Crashes: About once a week, although mercifully never when actually navigating. Garmin says it?s probably a 12v power spike, although their power adaptor is the logical place to filter spikes out (like for every other 12v device out there). I also carefully enlarged the reset hole in the back for fast resetting with the stylus point (although there is a reset pin inside the screw-off top of the stylus).
Stylus: The point material is too hard, is seriously wearing the screen in the graffiti area.
Free Downloadable Applications: Try the free JPEGView (why didn?t Garmin give us the ability to view images?). Get FileZ to allow you to manage (specifically delete) files. VFSMark lets you benchmark SD memory card speeds.
Memory: Obviously you?ll need a larger SD memory card. I?m okay with a 256MB card, but 512MB might be best because it would hold about half the US. Think twice about putting a large card and filling it up: the search times and map data download times are bad enough as it is.
Tracking: For some reason you can?t leave a breadcrumb trail as you travel like with most other GPS units. You can turn tracking on, then stop it and display it however.
MP3 Playback: Clicky, not really usable, unless you?re not very discerning.
Battery: Short life even when turned off, but more importantly is $150 to replace by Garmin (although it?s the same fee to completely replace the unit).
Two things I'd add to my original review: It will take at least a 1 gig SD card without problems, as I've done it. And apparently you can buy a new battery with installation tools and instructions on eBay for about $20.
Still really like the unit.

Great product, but delicate
Pros: Very good navigation / Excellent Customer Support
Cons: Reliability / Battery Life
Navigates as well or better than Magellin Never-Lost (built into some Hertz cars)
I really like the product, despite flaws.
Very good display, not quite as good as the Garmin portables for car use.
Very good customer support from Garmin. Got my first unit replaced after warranty period when I broke fragile external antenna connector.
But.. battery life is short, not a good GPS for hiking, biking. Units tend to reset due to static electricity. You do not lose data, but you will lose the current route and need to re-select destination.

Pros: It's the cheapest way to get GPS on the planet. This is a wonderful GPS and performs all the functions of a typical handheld, because it runs Palm OS, just like any other.

Cons: 1. Battery life is a turn-off. I could, at best, only get 1 hour continuous use. 2. Used it to show my friend who seemed to be interested but suddenly switched itself off, and would not start until I had to do a soft reset. There goes one potential custo

Great Product and you can bring it every where you go
Pros: Very good built-in GPS Palm PDA. You can bring it every where with you. High quality Map and Navigation.
Cons: the build-in antenna seems a little weak than other GPS units from Garmin. Also the units shuts off every few mins during the navigation. Don't if that is normal. and lastly the battery life is bad and I have to reset the unit to be able to turn the power

Good PDA but poor battery life
Pros: The PDA is very good, high quality except for battery. I think because GPS uses lots of battery when it is on. To solve that problem, there is website www.Seidioonline.com. They do have a full line accessories for Garmin iQue 3600. And their prices not to

Expensive toy
Pros: Routing is nice, and the machine talks clearly and gets you there. It says, authoritatively, that my house is on the other side of the street, but - that's pretty close.
Cons: Those who say the battery life is terrible are being kind to Garmin. Those who say the display is nice have the backlight turned on and have even worse battery life! Without the backlight the display is awful, readable only in direct light and only from

Great PDA, needs a better battery
Pros: 1. The GPS is awesome. I don't know how I got along without it. 2. The iQue has a beautiful and big screen, which is good for viewing pictures and for the GPS maps. 3. OS 5.2.1 is great. I love the new virtual graffiti and the new customization features
Cons: 1. Very poor battery life, but I got the dashboard mount so I can charge on the go. I don't know how I would survive without it. 2. Still has lots of software glitches (it hangs up on me an average of 2 times per day and requires a soft reset), but they

Very Good GPS, Adequate PDA.
Pros: The GPS system is great, the database is very good. The screen resolution is great. Memory is better than previous PDA's.
Cons: Battery life is horrible! Very few programs. The included third party programs are not really included they are borrowed until you pay more money for them, isn't $500.00 plus enough for a decent software package? The system seems to crash a lot when u

A Fantastic Combination
Pros: GPS, MP3, voice recorder, and all of it in a PDA. Screen display is great, and I haven't had an issue with it that looking through the documentation hasn't resolved. You need to learn to use it properly, but once you do, it's a GREAT device. Expect to hav
Cons: Like everyone else says, the battery doesn't last long. But if you are in your car with it plugged in, it will charge while using the GPS

Incredible PDA
Pros: I finally got my hands on one of these PDA's and I have to say. WOW!!! The GPS works flawlessly. I have to say I was very skeptical in the beginning but now that I have tested it Garmin has definitely made good on this marriage of a PDA and GPS unit co
Cons: Now I have to buy my wife one.... :)

Toy GPS
Pros: The idea to blend a GPS in a PDA
Cons: If you need a serious GPS donīt waste your money with a toy. GPS features and reliability are just good enough to send the maid to the grocery store. PDA features are nothing but a joke. If you need stuff that works, buy an Ipaq from HP, itīs a real comp
