    "The Black Sync-Hole"

    by gstark99 on April 26, 2005

Pros: WiFi worked out of the box

Cons: Still not comparable to the Palm

Summary: I just switched to a pocket PC from a Palm Platform. I was disappointed with the lack of basic functionality that was in the palm platform, therefore, I gave the Pocket PC a less than average rating. I've had parts of the screen lock up, needing to hard reset to access anything on that part of the screen. Occasionally when I try to syncronize, active sync just sits on "Connecting" for several minutes and then says "Not Connected". I have to take the pda out of the cradle, and retry several times to get it to work. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for when it connects successfully. The tasks only allow high, medium and low priorities while the palm allows 5 priority levels. Contacts are missing things the palm has like a picture and a birthday. You can't filter notes on categories. The active sync only allows you to syncronize to the default outlook folder so forget about keeping work and private appointments separate. The filtering on Categories is not useful either, because it actually removes anything from the PDA that is not in a category being syncronized to outlook. I will likely be returning my PDA for a new Palm...

I know what you're talking about when it comes to the hard resets and synch problems the the pocket PC. i'm on my second one in just 14 days but i still think it beats the Palm units. (providing you've got a good pocket PC) The features are very cool and although it does use the microsoft outlook you can still separate things if you really want. The big problem with Palm is the non replaceable battery. My Tungsten E lasted just under a year before the battery was unchargeable. So, unfortunate issues do occur with these kinds of products. i look forward to my second Pocket PC working just fine. I would recommend that first time buyers of this item get a refurbed unit because the factory will check all the specs before the unit is resold. I would give Pocket PC a '7' in ratings. The screen and operating system is superior to that of the Tungsten E from Palm, and the graphics look better to my eye.
