"BAD for play, OK for work..."
Pros: Near perfect Internet browsing with 802.11b, great Word/Excel/Powerpoint support, alot of memory
Cons: Very poor speaker, very poor game control support, hotsync cradle NOT included?, poor system performance (due to hard drive)
Summary: UNLIKE THE PREVIOUS USER REVIEWS, I ACTUALLY OWNED THIS DEVICE. I am also an official Palm OS software programmer and developer. In one sentence, I can describe LifeDrive: "BAD for play, OK for work". If you are going to be playing music MP3s and playing games (especially emulators) then DO NOT purchase this device (would recommend Tungsten|T3). System performance felt sluggish with 1 second pauses while accessing the hard drive. Device does not come with a hostsync cradle, which should have been included with the $500 price. Internet access through 802.11b was near perfect, with web pages looking great in landscape screen mode. Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files opened and could be edited flawlessly too on this device. Battery life (w/ all services on) was about average (3-4 hours). I use my Palm mostly for play (MP3s and games), which is why the low score. Device would have been a perfect 10 if the speaker was much better and if the 5-way navigator and application hard buttons worked properly in games and emulators. Nice and interesting effort by Palm, but device has critical flaws. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO YOU TO PASS ON LIFEDRIVE AND PURCHASE THE TUNGSTEN|T3 (A DEVICE I OWN AND CURRENT BEST PDA ON THE MARKET). Hopefully Palm reads these reviews, and will design something better in the near future.

Would you say that the T/X is actually better than the lifedrive? i have been wanting a lifedrive for a while now, but am a little unsure as to whether or not the difference between it and my T/X will be worth the money.

it would have been a real help if i had read this hobest review before i bought this product, i hope companies actually put forward what to expect form the device, like you did.. iam really pleased woth your effort.Mosf of the people who buy expensive devices either are short of time to decide what to buy or arent informed what to look for by the company.. and the retailers dont bother to give the customer on what is it that they are really looking for,, and company just boasts about the product,, had thy been more sincere( after all they would use the product themselves before relese) telling about the products expectations we wont loose our valuable money on such gadgets..people like me have to just live with this coz the place i bought dont have a return policy of the product.. so where is the solution for me.. peoplein US can plainly give it back... can you suggest as to what should i do...i stray in india.plese reply

I too am the proud owner of a T3. Have had it for a few years but now it is on it's last legs. I was going to replace it with the Lifedrive until I read your comments. Now I am not sure what to do. I did hear that Palm was coming out with a new Lifedrive in order to change the Hitachi drive to a new one because of the access time. Haven't heard any more about that. Any suggestions from anyone?

I have own about 5 different PDAs. I am a Palm fan. But this Lifedrive has more problems than I could ever imagine. Multiple resets at every turn. Resets for no apparent reasons. And don't try to listen to MP3 and go to a different program you will get a pause with static so long you swear your palm is about to die. I sold it after six months and bought a Palm TX forget about the Hardrive business it is not worth it

I found your review quite enlightening, though a couple of points were not very clear to me. First, you said that the performance was a little sluggish. Was that just between songs or at any time the PDA had to access a program? Secondly, I''m not clear on problem with running games on it. Can't the buttons below the screen be set up in a way to run games? Also, forgive my ignorance, but what are emulators? Thanks!
