"Definitely better than a piece of paper."

by Gonenuhts on November 10, 2005

Pros: Unlike whatīs between my ears, it never forgets.

Cons: No USB-powered cable out of the box.

Summary: I abandoned those tiny pieces of paper, now I use the not-recognizable notepad, instead. When in a hurry, handwriting is still faster than any character-recognition technique. If you ever get 5 seconds to breath, then you can transfer your notes to standard "Arial"...
Since I must take it back and forth, and I spend most of time at work, the chunky cradle sits at home, and a USB-powered cable keeps it Hotsyncīed to my office, while charging batteries. Do you really need that chunky cradle attached to a 110V outlet in your office desk? I know I donīt.

Forget about e-mail synch too, since any attachments would eat its memory in a heartbeat; I use tasks, phone list and notes (synched to Outlook) only. The password feature is a plus, so all those logins and passwords can be remembered, if you can only remember ONE. Somebody would have to steal it from you, and take some time to crack its password, not to mention you can hide everything. By then, you changed all the passwords, so it is pointless to worry.

Get yourself a SD card too, and some free program to backup ALL the contents of the Palm, including those "security files", since you donīt know when will it run out of batteries, or if it will forget everything you stuffed in it. Remember to copy the backup program too, so it can be used to restore everything else. Donīt rely on your office or home PCs for backup purposes, since they are way more vulnerable to damage than your Palm (virus versus back-pocket-crunching, tough battle). Just use both, and be sure the card is ok once in a while.

Forget about Word and Excel, since most of the formatting will be destroyed on the Palm. Only real simple files can be synchronized between two PCs, and wonīt be corrupted in the process. Word and Excel fans should turn to Pocket PCs and pay through the **** for it.

Now, you bought a "Pocket PC"? Did you really think you would get rid of boot-up time? HAHAHAHAHA, FORGET IT. A Palm is what every PC should be, a zero-wait device to keep all your stuff. I didnīt have to wait my paper notebook to load any OS, I wonīt put up with that now.
