"Solid, reliable, indispensible"
Summary: I bought a Platinum two years ago after a ridiculously extensive shop around, because it was clearly the best combination of features and price at the time. Well, I never had a problem since (I think it crashed once after I installed some dodgy software), despite giving it a good bashing around the world... then I lost it the other week... major bummer. Now, I've bought two more - one for me, one for my bro. The price just gets better and, if you're after an easy to use handheld, the features on some of the others don't justify the cost. I looked long and hard at the new Clie SJ22. Colour screen would be nice... 16 MHz... rechargeable battery and it looks great. But I bought two platinums with 8M Springboard expansion cards (ie 16M total), leather cases, etc for less than the price of one ("entry-level") Clie. The Platinum is just as fast I use rechargeable AAs anyway and I actully prefer the heavier text on the Platinum screen to the Sony screen. The major drawbacks with the Platinum are that the backlight is pretty woeful and there's no jog-dial. So if a high res colour screen and lots of nick nacks are important to you, Sony seems to win gold but if you want to use your handheld as a handheld, save your silver and go Platinum!
