"Good all round cheap gps for car or walking"
Pros: Good software, easy to use, cheap
Cons: when loses power has to have settings put back
Summary: Good under $200 gps. Battery life is OK (I've gotten up to 4 hours off the battery while walking). Pharos mapping software is excellent (this is my second generation Pharos device). The signal comes in very well and rapidly corrects the route when you go off course. The speaker is good and LOUD (important for driving...I've had very wimpy units which you could not hear over the road noise). The touchscreen display is bright and easy to use (though for some strange reason they omitted a stylus holder on the unit). My major complaint is that when the battery dies all your settings disappear. This wouldn't be so bad except the GPS does not reset the system clock as in many other units (GPS is based on minutely accurate time for gosh sakes...so why can't they set the system clock when it gets a GPS lock?). If you are using this attached to a car this is not really relevant. But if you are sticking this in the glove compartment when you are not using it (I've had a GPS unit stolen already, so this is a pretty good idea anyway), beware of the battery dying. Just be prepared to keep resetting the time and date continuously (or just ignore the clock and use the GPS functions exclusively). You must reset the touch screen when it loses power (click on the touchscreen calibration points).
