"OK, but. . ."
Pros: Multiple Databases
Cons: Not Vista Mobile Sync Compatible, Memory Hog
Summary: I purchased ACT! 2008 because the 2007 version handheld sync was not Vista compatible. Guess what ? neither is the 2008 version. Customer support has been nonexistent, and the only help I could find in their user community recommended I spend $249 per year for a sync service to my PDA/Phone. I would have also had to spend another $240 per year to turn on the data portion of my service, making the cost $489 per year to sync my contacts. Sadly, I think he was right. I am going back to Outlook with Contact Manager or Maximizer.

My act does crash from time to time but, candidly not as much as outlook. Considering that act's resources are considerable more constrained than microsoft and their user comuninity is much smaller I think the application (in my enviornment) is relatively stable. 2gb+ of memory is advisable. You may want to try uninstalling/reinstalling. Sometimes applications don't load propely through no fault of their or the users.
As far as using outlook for conact manager. I purchased the buisiness contact add on and it was horrific (crashed so many times I unistalled it) plus it was hard to use and could not find any useful training/documentation.
Act has allot of cool/customizable features that make it very flexible. I run my small company on it and it keeps track of stuff and allows me to make customized documents that I have not figured out how to do in outlook (admittedly this could be user error)
All in all I have yet to find a better application for contact mananagemnt
