    "Pretty Good"

    by mike1234565 on July 30, 2008

Pros: Fun and addicting like it always was

Cons: Very short single player gameplay

Summary: Haven't played Civ since Civ 2 on my old PC, but I was definitely in the market for a fun semi-time consuming game. Saw this game in a store, picked it up and was brought back to however many years ago when I used to play Civ 2 for hours on end.

Thing I like most about this game is the detail applied to the faction you choose and the upgrades you get from successful combat. Play is intricate and very detailed yet you dont have to micro-manage settlers to build up every square like you did in the old versions (very annoying). Gameplay is very fun and although figuring out the difference between what the left analog and right analog sticks do may be confusing at first, in about 20 turns it all becomes clear.

Game is also much more beginner friendly than previous versions yet strategy still has to be learned the hard way.

Main thing that was upsetting was the relatively short and quick way to score a win. I say short because, with the 4 ways of beating the game, it's easy to achieve any of those by the 18th or 19th centuries for the most part regardless of difficulty. Combine that with a smaller world (I remember being able to create a zillion cities in the old versions as opposed to this one) and it feels a little compressed. Also, once you obtain an absolute advantage over 2 or more races at any time period, the game is as good as over. I kinda missed the old game where I could actually play on even after I won and start colonizing other planets and create bigger and better units.

In summary, although I enjoyed the neverending feel of my old Civ game greatly, this one has me addicted and playing for hours on end just the same.
