"Sounds good but lacks key features." on by DanHilberman
Pros: Sound is excellent for table radio and lives up to the enormous choice of radio stations.
Cons: After a couple months i find I want the following features added:
a) retain Wireless encryption Key through power outage
b) allow two or three Wi-Fi links, not just oneSummary: continuing features I want:
c) I want to turn OFF the snooze featured) Need clearer message when wireless signal is too low, how about 5 bars like my PC. Most messages blame the radio station, not the link
e) I want to program alarms by day of the week, like my thermostat
f) When I contacted VTECH because my favorite radio station didn't work, they didn't care!! Even the radio station technician could not get them to help (KRTY in San Francisco).
g) When encryption Key is lost, need clear message
h) Does not work well on medium signal (3 bars on my laptop), had to add higher gain antenna to my router.
i) When alarm comes ON to a radio station, bring volume up slowly over 10-15 seconds so I don't jump out of bed.
Good beginning internet radio but features need to catch up with decades of clock radio features. -
"Excellent Product (Recommend)" on by Process249

"A waste of money" on by EnricoPolazzo
Pros: Sound Quality
Cons: The new radio completely stopped working 1 year and 4 months after I bought it. Tech support was a waste of time. They did offer 15% off a new unit, but why?
Don't waste your money on this item.Summary: I purchased a new unit in June of 2009. It completely stopped working in October of 2010. Tech support was a waste of time. Their only suggestion was to unplug the unit, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Since the radio was 4 months past the 1 year warranty the only thing they offered me was 15% off of a new unit, but why would I want to spend $140 on a radio that going to last a year.
Don't waste your money on this item. -
"Very cool, high quality, low$, wi-fi radio/alarm clock." on by remcobob
Pros: Linear setup if you already have a wireless network. Read the directions ,takes about 40 minutes while the family watches (Daughter's comment, "I want one!).
A few hitches but overall, 5 stars Great sound for a little box.Cons: Glitches so far. Can't set day of week so weather data is off. See below.
Second issue - You setup up your favorites either manually on the device or on the web site. Manually is easy but slow, website only transferred 4 links out of 14.Summary: Best choice for very high quality radio if your "over the air signal" is poor. The only issue you will have is if your wireless signal is not strong. I just upgraded to a 3 antenna N from a b/g and it made a big difference on my laptop g speed (solid 54 vs 20-30).
The weather feature - The first day shown is not today, you have to scan till the day of the week (started on Tue and it was Thurs but it doesn't tell you it's Tue weather on the first display.) Maybe this will fix itself over time.
Getting computer connection requires password on a IS9181 user account. I don't like using passwords on personal account but I guess I'm stuck if I want to access my computer music. Will run playlists (cool), but has to be in same directory as music files.
Very good manual. Good coverage of setup, step by step including network setup and computer link setup for 2000, xp vista, win7, and various Mac OS.
Tested a Celtic music station from Germany first for the wife and she was sold. Will add Tango from Argentina, etc. 10,000+ stations, many with no commercials, public radio, etc. Can't get some local stations because they don't direct stream on the web or release the URL for the direct feed.
Great sound, not 7.1 like the living room but beats any other clock radio.
WOW
Double WOW, VTECH website was cheapest source
