While Audiovox isn't known for making the sleekest portable DVD players, it does produce relatively affordable ones. With its D1700 model, Audiovox is attempting to strike the right balance between decent cosmetics, performance, and price. Did the company succeed? Ultimately, that will depend on how much stores and online retailers discount the D1700.

On the road, again
As a step-up model to the , this portable DVD player follows Audiovox's philosophy of sacrificing a little style to meet a price point. In this case, that price point is $799. Like the DV1680, the D1700 isn't exactly svelte, weighing in at 3 pounds with the lithium-ion battery (2 pounds without). However, the unit's cosmetics are a tad slicker.

Flip open the clamshell casing, and you'll find a 7-inch screen, two tiny speakers, and three buttons. These buttons, which adorn the top half of the D1700, are actually a nice touch; two analog dials control color and brightness settings while the third lets you select the display mode (4:3, 16:9, 16:9 zoom to fit screen, or off).

On the bottom half of the deck, you'll find a full set of command buttons. While the backlit LCD is easily readable in darkness, the nonbacklit buttons are not. Another gripe: The remote is much harder to use than the credit card-sized controller that comes with the DV1680.

In terms of connectivity, there's the standard minijack headphone output as well as a composite minijack input/output for connecting the unit to a TV or receiving a signal from a camcorder. You also get a dongle to output S-Video signals, and you can toggle between PAL and NTSC video--just bear in mind that this is only a Region 1 DVD deck, so even if you do get PAL content, you need to make certain that it isn't copy-protected. You won't find a component-video output for optimal picture quality on high-end TVs or an optical digital-audio out.

Quality control
As far as picture quality is concerned, we found that the D1700 inherited some problems from the DV1680--namely, contending with hot spots and brightness transitions. In one scene in the From Hell DVD, Johnny Depp's character and a doctor are chatting in a pitch-black room. As the room quickly lights up, the LCD was polluted with blocky artifacts near the light source.

While watching the "making-of" documentaries on the From Hell special-features disc, we noticed some picture softness when jumping between scenes shot on digital video and the film itself. Otherwise, we found the picture to be reasonably crisp; it's far from the quality of a progressive-scan deck or a DVD-equipped notebook, but the D1700 is a respectable performer.

Thanks to the inclusion of the aforementioned color and brightness dials, the display works well enough. There is a slight ghosting effect--the image becomes inverted and difficult to see at certain angles--but two people sitting side by side will be able to view a movie without problems. When it comes to audio, the unit's built-in speakers are loud enough, but not surprisingly, they sound hollow and tinny. We recommend using a decent pair of headphones (earbuds come with the player) for listening to discs, particularly on planes.

Battery life was decent at a little more than three hours. But buyers should be aware that the included battery pack, which snaps to the bottom of the unit, adds some bulk. Also, the D1700 doesn't have a built-in battery like Panasonic's sleek . What it lacks in panache, though, the D1700 makes up for in extras. Not only do you get the rechargeable battery and a vehicle power adapter straight out of the box, but you also get a charger that can draw power from a PC's USB port.

Since this Audiovox can also serve double duty as a home deck, we hooked it up to a 27-inch Samsung Tantus DynaFlat HDTV set to see how it would perform. There were no major gaffes to note with the picture quality, though we wish that the player had a component output for optimal performance. Overall, as a home player, the 1700 is on a par with a budget-level deck.

If you have a laptop that lacks a DVD-ROM drive, a portable DVD player such as the D1700 might be worth considering. While the $799 list price is too high, we've been able to find it for as little as $500 online, making it one of the least expensive portable DVD players currently on the market. If you're really looking to get your video fix on a shoestring budget, check out Audiovox's step-down model, the DV1680, which yields similar performance and now sells for less than $450 on the Web.

Don't buy this model

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The Model D1700 is very bad reliability, it never complete to run any single DVD movie. Please go new model D1730 if you really want to own Audiovox. I just got the model D1730, it runs very good for any type of DVDs, VCDs, CD-RWs with very good pictures and sounds quality. I run it daily 2-3 hours for a month. It is very reliable without any crash at least so far. Go D1730!

Listen Do Not Buy!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got this cheap $399 that should have clued me in .I read the reviews, and thought "hey maybe its not as bad as people say, it might be good for me", ha no way. First DVD put in Brand new Monsters Inc. ,it would keep adding sub-titles, over and over I tried many ways to get rid of them, nothing worked. Next DVD would flash by then end up on Main Audiovox page weird. Finally started another DVD and it ran!! Than just ended and hour in. Spend a little more for a name brand.

"three strikes and out"

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased one of these units at CompuUSA a couple months ago. After I got it home and tested it out, it skipped constantly. So I returned it for another unit that I tested briefly in the store. After a couple weeks that unit started to skip too. When I took that unit back a store test of unit number 3 showed that it skipped too. That was all I needed to see. AudioCrap.

Works great for a budget player

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Great player for the money. I bought a rev.8 player that suffers from none of the freezing problems mentioned in other reviews. The unit comes with everything you need except a case and will operate about 3.5 hours on a single battery charge.

Intermittent freezing on some DVDs.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this player at RC Willey just over two weeks ago. I chose this device because of the bright picture and sound quality. It also had all the features I wanted in an portable DVD player (CD-R, MP3, VCD capabilities). Unfortunately, this device simply would not play certain DVDs (even brand new ones like Lord of the Rings and Monsters Inc.). I tried to take this player back for a refund, but I was two days over the two week return window. Therefore I could only get in-store credit. I have read the other reviews of this device and highly recommend you heed their warnings. I also recommend you purchase your product somewhere other than RC Willey.

excellent deal!!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: i got this player as a gift for christmas. i'll be honest there were a few movies that skipped. so to be on the safe side i exchanged it for another. and until this day(knock on wood) it had skipped only once, other than that it's a good player. if you trust the more popular name brands then by all means dish out the extra cash and go for it. If you're looking for value then give the d1700 a try.

Definately disappointed!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I gave player to my son for Christmas only 6 weeks later we returned it for a new one (kept freezing and skipping). Now 5 months later it is in the bag we purchased to protect and extend the life of the player, but mostly because it now skips and freezes. What a waste of money!

great picture and value but skips and freezes

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I found the unit a awesome deal at $480.00 (military base price) the picture, sound and features are great, especially a included car adapter! But what good is the aforementioned when the player skips and freezes! Keep in mind this has nothing to do with movement...the skipping and freezing happened while stationary on my desk. Even though warranty covers it I can't have faith in the product, particularly when I note that many other reviewers have experienced the same thing. May have to spend more and get a higher end brand.

Plays all formats

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Most reviews don't mention the compact disk formats that the DVD plays. The best of the others do not play formats like VCD and SVCD. The Audiovox 1700 does, play everything I throw at it. I make videos with my Mac G4. The Audiovox 1700 plays the VCD I make with Toast and SVCDs I make with my Virtual PC. This is a huge plus. I sold my regular DVD player and use this as my primary machine.

Great Unit,Greater Bargain

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have had my unit for about 6 months traveled to california, to Moscow, to East Coast the unit is wonderful, clear picture and sound, the great thing is that it place DVD, and VCD, from almost any region, so just for that its worth the cost!!!!!!!!

VERY annoying player

Pros:

Cons:

Review: For the $600 I spent on this player really expected something a little better. I spend atleast 30 min just trying to get the player to play my movie. Once it starts it seems to be ok, but not all the time. Sometimes it skips scenes...the picture becomes distorted. I find this player very annoying and by the time the movie starts playing you're so annoyed you don't even feel like watching a movie anymore. Read the reviews around mine. We all seem to of had the same problems with this. Think twice before purchasing this product. My advice...go the extra $100 and get a brand name.

Great Player, No Problems

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I received the D1700 for graduation and it has performed flawlessly. The sound is wonderful and the picture crisp. It is reasonably compat and I bring it wherever I go. The cost of the unit was $510 and a four year warranty another $70.

wonderful device

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Bright, light, and delightful. This device is a real treat, especially if you want DVD playback without entanglements. Put in a disc and select "play". The speakers are sufficiently clear and go plenty loud and you don't need a separate case of attachments to use it. Folks with late night jobs; lengthy travel plans; vacations; and kids (who get really irritated when stuck in the car for four hours with nothing to do) will appreciate this handy device. It runs 3 hours+ on one charge, plugs into the car's cigarette lighter and into the AC outlet in your home. Dolby 5.1 Surround and video output make this unit quite possibly the only DVD player you need (all connectors supplied). Enjoy! This one's for you!

I just couldn't live with it !

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It has many features and accessories which were included with the player. It displays excellent images and produces very good sound...when it plays...now the bad part, it would play only about 50% of the time. It'll skip and just hang the other 50%. It was very frustrating and I first thought the problems were isolated to my unit only...please read the reviews of DV1700 under DV1680 model. I immediately returned it for a refund. I just couldn't live with it! I'm looking for a different brand.

Audiovox IS dependable

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Believe it or not, aside from the numerous features and comparatively low price, I think the best part of this player is the support. When I dropped mine off of the top of a bunk bed and it broke, Audiovox sent me a brand new unit, no questions asked!(under warranty)
