Lightweight and sleek, this feature-rich portable DVD player has a 9-inch LCD, offers solid performance both on the road and at home connected to your TV, and even has support for DVD-Audio and MP3 CDs. The only problem is its rather hefty price tag.

Blue-light special
At 2.2 pounds, the LA95 isn't the lightest portable DVD player, but it's nowhere as heavy as most DVD-equipped laptops, and it isn't a nuisance to carry. All in all, it has a pretty sturdy feel, and though we didn't dare drop it, it traveled just fine in a lightly padded carrying case.

Other than its ample, 9-inch display, the first thing you'll notice when you open the player is the multidirectional mouse button/jog dial that's illuminated by a cool-looking, blue backlight, which you can choose to turn off. We also appreciated the backlit transport buttons (Next Chapter, Previous Chapter, Pause), as well as the power on/off buttons. Another plus: the small, easy-to-use remote incorporates a navigational mouse button.

Around the side, you'll find four minijack outputs that allow you to connect the player to your TV, as well as a surround-sound A/V receiver. The LA95 supports playback of DVD-Audio discs, CD-R/RWs, MP3 CDs, select DVD-Rs, and even DVD-RAM, according to Panasonic. There's also Dolby Digital- and DTS-compatible optical audio output (cable not included). You won't find a multitude of picture adjustment options, but all of the standard DVD features are here, and the jog dial allows you to scan forward and reverse at multiple speeds for quick scene searches.

All in all, we had no major gripes with the display. We found that we could view movies from an off-axis position, which means that someone sitting in the seat next to you on a plane won't have a problem watching your movie along with you. But you should be aware that you'd get a sharper picture from a DVD-equipped laptop.

Good for the home, too
In addition to using the player on a few coast-to-coast flights, we also took the time to hook it up to a modest, 27-inch Samsung set and a 32-inch, HD-ready Sony WEGA. Generally, we were pleased with the picture and sound quality. Though there are no component-video connections for optimal picture quality, the 2001 version of Planet of the Apes looked sharp, with vivid colors, on the Sony. Users with higher-end TVs will want to invest in a progressive-scan player (this player is interlaced-only), but the LA95 is ideal for connecting to, say, a TV in a hotel or a conference room.

If you're in the habit of taking longer flights, you'll probably want to invest in the optional, $169.95 (list price) battery pack, which connects to the bottom of the unit and adds 1.1 pounds to the overall weight. As it stands, the rechargeable lithium-ion battery that comes with the LA95 gives you slightly more than 2.5 hours of juice, which is enough to watch most full-length movies but not enough, for example, to view the entire Apocalypse Now Redux.

That said, this is one of those products that certainly is a nice luxury--if you can afford it. With a list price of $1,299 (though you can find it for closer to $1,000), we can't say it's a bargain, particularly since DVD-equipped laptops are quickly coming down in price. But for some people, especially those who haven't yet invested in a DVD player and who travel a lot, the LA95 is worth considering.

Good Product Awful Warranty

Pros: Does Everything Advertised

Cons: This a middling but annoying. My unit broke soon (within a month) after I got it. It just stopped tracking (and was not abused). You would think that replacement would be with a new unit but Panasonic apparently replaces with reconditioned products. T

Excellent small machine with good quality

Pros: Good sound, good picture, and with theadd-on battery pack, plenty of hours to watch a DVD or two. Good connectivity options, a quality product that though a bit on the pricey side is well worth the money.

Cons: It does need the extra battery pack to get a decent amount of playback time when not connected to the power. Otherwise it is hard to fault.

Large Screen, Good Picture, Great Sound!

Pros: 1. Feature Set. 2. AWESOME Sound! 3. I disagree with above comments about picture quality. I found it to be quite good compared to other models. I wonder if this varies from unit to unit. 4. Control Layout 5. Panasonic Quality!

Cons: Slight problem with headphone jack but nothing a little "jiggling" wouldn't fix.

Great all around DVD Player

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Ive had mien for about half a year and it still works and looks great. Te player has everything the standard user would ever need to use and more. The blue dial in the middle makes the player way easier to use. The sound is better than the speakers on my TV. The player is great for everybody.

A good player for dvd but kind of user unfriendly to operate

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Generally a good unit to stick a dvd in and watch but I find the manual poorly written and the navigating menus difficult. The on screen icons are very poor quality and difficult to figure out what they are without looking in the manual. I do like the additional battery pack though; great for travelling by air and watching lots of movies. For listening to audio cd's I find it lacks some functions, like onscreen menu's for selecting tunes, random etc. A great unit for watching movies on the road and even hooking up to you TV at home to watch the dvds but not so good for music.

Scratches your dvd's

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I recently purchased this item as a Christmas gift.I thought the look was very sleek and stylish. The video and audio features were quite good.Though the player has a very hefty price tag,it seemed that I got my money's worth.Unfourtunately a problem arose. When playing dvds everything seems to work out fine, but you notice that after some time your dvds develop subtle and then some major scratches that will affect picture quality. In my opinion for the kind of money panasonic is asking for this item,it should work like a dream.Too bad it doesn't.

TERRIFIC-BEYOND MY EXPECTATIONS

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I received my DVD-LA95 for Christmas 2002, as a gift. While I have a complete Home Theater set-up, I previously felt that the portable DVD players were too pricey. I am glad someone in the family felt it was worthwhile and gave me this wonderful gift. About a month ago I just purchased a Philips DVDR985 Recorder, which uses DVD+R and DVD+RW blanks on which to record favorites from my video & laser disc collection. To my surprise, both of these media types worked, without fail, on my new Panasonic DVD-LA95.Terrific machine & am happy a family member gave me this great gift.

Probably the best one out there!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Being the previous owner of the infamous Audiovox D1700 with so many problems skipping and freezing, I wanted a dependable portable DVD player with many features and I found it! This Panasonic DVD-LA95 has been a joy. It displays a brilliant, sharp pictures and great sound, I couldn't ask for more. At first, I thought about being bit pricy, but it is worth every dollar. My 5 year old daughter and I play it everyday, many hours each. I'm convinced that this is probably the best one out there!

Great sound but poor picture...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I was ready to order the LA95 based on the good reviews it got and the Panasonic's reputation for quality products. However, after trying an LA95 out at a local store, I was disappointed with the picture quality. The artifacts were very noticeable when viewing the screen from 2 feet away or less. When viewing from more than 2 ft. away, however, the picture was great. The problem is that if you are going use the LA95 on a plane or tabletop, you will likely be viewing it 2 ft. away or less, and the eyestrain will be unbearable. For this scenario, I would definitely go with the Toshiba SD-P2000, as its progressive scanned 8.9" picture beats that of the LA95, but the SD-P2000 may not loud enough for some to use in a moving vehicle where there is significant background noise. So, if you are going to mainly use it in a van at a distance of 3ft or so from the viewer(s), then the LA95 is the one to get, especially since it's sound is probably the loudest and best of all the portable DVD players on the market today.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I wasn't impressed. The screens are a low cost items these days, but you would never know it when you buy this unit. You would be better off spending your money on a Laptop with DVD. This unti should not cost more than 400 bucks.

A travel toy, not a work toy.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased my LA-95 in Feb. of this year. I also purchased the additional battery to extend play time (up to 8 hours-and it does it). There are a lot of people to keep saying that they can buy a laptop for only $400 more. They are right, but this is a travel toy-pure and simple. This "toy" is not for the budget seeker. Do not buy this if you can't afford both a laptop and a portable dvd player. I have a computer at my desk and a laptop, thats why when I am on vacation I do not want my laptop! LEAVE IT AT HOME! This unit (LA-95) is small, lightweight, and will play for 8 hours plus. The screen quality is very good and the layout of the unit is quite nice. I have logged many hours already on my LA-95 and it has worked perfectly. The sound is decent, but for air travel buy a set of noise cancelling headphones and you will be happier. The remote is a real one, not one of those with the little bubbles that flaten out over time like on the credit card size remotes, it has real buttons and a joystick of sorts to help navigate the menus. This units has impressed me thus far. I will say as I said earlier DO NOT BUY THIS because your looking for a great deal, if you don't have a laptop step-up and pay $1500 for a decent one and you will have your dvd player with shorter play time and a much bigger, heavier unit. Trust me I travel for business with the laptop and it's a drag to haul around and to only get 3 hours worth of movies.

Bought one; important caveats

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Good points: excellent look and feel; excellent picture; adequate sound; plays mp3 CDs as well. Bad Points: 1) std battery <2 hrs w/movie 2) extended battery cost me $140. Doubled weight. HOKEY DESIGN! Clips to bottom but is only 2/3 the width - like stacking a big book on a small book - boo to designers. 3) no case at all - for $800 should have one 4) clunky powerpack (like a regular laptop) doubles travel bulk Conclusion -- overall, IMO, currently the best on the market all things considered. Very good but not outstanding product.

Great machine, but plastic case.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The bells and whistles are great, but the case is a shiny silver plastic (I'm sure to keep weight down). Just makes it feel a bit cheap. However, the picture is great. Playback is fine - no problems. I have not compared it besides another machine, so cannot review this. I searched for price and features, comparing all in the category. I bought from eCost (@ $720 - 6/17/02). I found this to be the best deal. You can get a laptop for a couple of hundred more to play DVDs, but I wanted a DVD player for travel.

Beats a laptop computer hands-down!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: When DVD drives first appeared on laptop computers, I thought all my prayers had been answered. Finally, my own in-flight movie! I never understood the little machines that ONLY played movies. Now I'm a true believer in the "one-trick pony" players, for the following reasons: 1) no need to boot up; 2) my laptop's DVD player "froze up" in the middle of movies more times than I care to remember; 3) you can connect this player to the tv in your hotel room and use the remote - just try that with your typical laptop computer!; and 4) this is so much smaller and lighter than a laptop. If you have to travel with a laptop, I can see the logic of just using that as your dvd player. Otherwise, there is no comparison. (One final note: you will need to invest in some noise-cancellation headphones to really enjoy these on an airplane - you don't realize just how loud a plane is until you try to listen to music or watch a movie while traveling.)

Pros:

Cons:

OH MY GOD IS IT SWEET

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Yes, this is the ultimate, ant with the ultimate comes the ultimate price, but if you have the money (like i did... emphasis on did) it is great. The picture is fine, not as nice as a crt or hdtv, but nontheless still great. But the major shinner here is the sound IT IS EXCELLENT. I was blown a way with the quality from the portable, the leading toshiba with the suposed great picture quality has weak headphone power and buit in speaker. Yet, the la95 has the total opposite, loud clear and audio out for dts and dolby digital. The device is super portable, cleanly designed, a really technological marvel. Also it has dvd audio support, so you can hold on to it for a few years before ebaying it. The size of the player is just right and fits snuggly into the popular caselogic case you find at best buys these day. I suggest www.mjshow.com i got it for 850 shipped to CA with no problems. So in all acutally you don;t have to pay an arm and a leg. IF YOU HAVE AND MONEY AND A LOVE FOR MOVIES THIS IS IT.

Great DVD if you can afford it

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Decided to go with the LA95 after much internet research and viewing different models in stores. I even rented a couple at airports during trips. I was able to pick one up for $800. At that price the extra $100-150 was well worth it to get the much larger 9 inch screen. The picture is good and the larger screen is great when our family travels X-country on flights where more than one person can easily see the screen. If you plan on having 2 viewers on an airplance you will need to get a headphone adapter as there is only one output and the speakers don't provide adequate sound for adults. My 2 year old son doesn't mind the speakers. The smaller models, especially 5", are really designed for one viewer only. In general the portable DVD's make our many trips doable with our 2 year old as we have an entertainment option to keep him occupied on 6 hour flights or while sitting in the airport. If you can get a good price go for the 9" screen you won't be disappointed.

Great toy-not for the the value seekers

Pros:

Cons:

Review: What a beautiful little player? I have done a lot of research prior to my purchase and their are a couple of reasons I choose the Panasonic; 1)The optional battery pushes viewing time to over 5 hours easy. 2)The the screen size is IMPRESSIVE. The machine is small in size, but packs a nice large screen. 3)Has anyone out there carried their laptop around to watch movies? I will carry my for business, but lets be realistic who wants to lug it when your on vacation with the wife and kids. Anyone who makes the argument that they should buy a laptop instead of this does not get it. This is a toy-period. A laptop is a tool. Buy one of these if you can afford to have both.

WHY??? Way too pricey

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This would be one of the stupidest purchases I can think of. Why spend nearly $1000 for a one-trick pony, when, for just a few hundred more, you could get a full-featured Apple iBook. It's nearly the same size, has a larger screen, is admittedly a bit heavier - but is a _full_ laptop, allowing you to do everything inherent to that platform. $1000 for JUST a DVD player seems incredibly stupid. If you're going to spend that kind of cash, get your money's worth.

Looks Snazzy but the picture quality is not up to par

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Did a lot of research before I invested in one of these expensive gadget and it came down to the Toshiba SPD1500 and this one. The LA95 is all style but the picture quality is significantly inferior to the Toshiba. It was a hard choice to because the LA95 is slimmer, sleeker, lighter, screen is 1" larger, and it can open 180 degrees, but after close scrutiny of playback of the same DVD on both you see significan block artifacts on this unit. So to me it's the picture that really counts, so I sacrificed all the cool looks for the best picture quality.

BEAUTIFUL - Best Features available 11/30/01

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The quality looks of this Player is a beautiful first impression, this beauty even puts Sony in a lesser position. This system plays any proper DVD/CD type media and has ALL functions made for any comparable device. Another feature that completly rocks is that the inputs can be used to playback from digital camcorders, cameras, and in the case of my Kodak DC290, annotated audio of the jpegs. This works out as a fine, 9" TV monitor (buy 3 inexpensive RCA-RCA connectors). Purchased from Digitaletailer.com for $749 + $33 grnd shipping. A little pricey but I'm happy I separated my desire for a laptop w/ a DVD drive because it's not the same. This unit can double a full-featured home theater system (has all component outputs) and has a better picture than ANY laptop could produce. Here's a special, extra tip: Go to Circuit City, purchase the Sony FRS-T77 speakers and AMAZE everyone with BIG theater sound re-produced by such a small combination. If you don't know about these speakers, believe me, you have no idea! In closing; you get the best picture, on a reasonably large size local screen, all the functions of a stationary player and then some, in the most beautiful system of it's kind in this DVD/entertainment unit.
