The DVD-L100 is an innovative new way to bring DVD movies, digital music and even family photos with you wherever you go. Lifting the huge 10" wide screen display reveals a locking disc bay that accurately tracks DVDs, CDs and even CD-R/W discs no matter what position the player is in. The versatility of the DVD-L100 allows you to bring the 10" portable DVD to many different locations and enjoy the largest picture available. The integral Memory Stick slot can be used to instantly transfer digital photos or MP3 files. These pictures and music can be burned onto the increasingly popular CD-R/W discs, and the player also reads the Photo CDs available from many photo finishing retailers. Off road, online or just in the palm of your hand, the DVD-L100 is the perfect portable partner for people on the go!

Samsung's DVD-L100 sports the biggest screen--10 inches diagonally--currently available in a portable DVD player. A screen that large has its advantages and disadvantages, and those looking to save weight in their bloated laptop bags should probably choose another model. However, if you want a deck to mount in your family car, like the idea of having a decent-sized screen for on-the-go viewing, and don't mind carrying a big player, the L100 is an appealing choice.Samsung's DVD-L100 sports the biggest screen--10 inches diagonally--currently available in a portable DVD player. A screen that large has its advantages and disadvantages, and those looking to save weight in their bloated laptop bags should probably choose another model. However, if you want a deck to mount in your family car, like the idea of having a decent-sized screen for on-the-go viewing, and don't mind carrying a big player, the L100 is an appealing choice.

Design
More than any other portable, the $999 (list) DVD-L100 resembles a small laptop computer. In fact, when it went through the X-ray machine at the airport, security flagged it as a notebook. Laptops--but not DVD players--must be taken out of your bag before going through the screening machine. After we informed the security personnel that it was a DVD player, one of them said, "It's that Samsung with the 10-inch screen, isn't it?"

Indeed, it was--all three pounds of it with the battery pack attached. That's a bit heavier than many smaller portable models but the same weight as the Toshiba SD-P2000. The player itself is fairly trim despite its large screen, but we had a bigger gripe with the power adapter: It's high-tech and looks cool, but it took up too much room in our carry-on bag. We also wished that Samsung included a car-lighter power adapter.

Available controls are conveniently arranged, allowing for easy access to all standard DVD functions except for the setup menu, which must be activated via the credit-card-style remote. We had no complaints about that remote, but if you lose it, you won't be able to get into the setup menu--a bummer.

One note about the detachable battery back: It's fairly compact and clips onto the back of the L100 without adding much bulk. Samsung sells a larger battery that offers substantially more juice but adds extra weight to the unit.

Features
The DVD-L100 has a fairly ample feature set, including a Memory Stick slot; two headphone jacks so that you can watch a movie with the person sitting next to you; plus the standard zoom and angle-change features during playback. On the sound front, you'll find a dialogue-boost option (a.k.a. dynamic compensation) as well as a faux-surround mode.

The L100 doesn't have much in the way of picture-tweaking capabilities; you can adjust the brightness level, but that's about it. There's also no way to change aspect ratio on the 16:9 LCD, so if you watch content that isn't enhanced for wide-screen sets--such as the DVD of the TV show Get a Life that we used--everyone appears short and fat.

As noted, in case you're interested in mounting the unit to the underside of a kitchen cabinet or to the roof of your SUV, you can display video upside down at the touch of a button. Samsung doesn't supply the optional mounting kit, which will run you an extra $125 to $200 when installed by a professional.

In addition to audio CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3 CDs, the L100 handles VCDs, DVD-Rs, DVD+Rs, and DVD+RWs, although it couldn't read a DVD-RW. Samsung provides two applications--Digital Audio Manager and Digital Photo Manager--for viewing images and music stored on a Memory Stick (most Photo CDs are also supported). All JPEGs with a resolution of less than 1,600x1,200 can be played back with the Photo Manager program. A slide-show mode and some rudimentary image-editing options are also available. Unfortunately, the Audio Manager, which displays ID3 tags, is not compatible with MP3 CD-Rs. This Samsung will still play most MP3 CDs, but it will display only the first eight characters of titles.

Though it lacks a component-video output, the L100 includes a decent set of connectivity options. The player outputs composite video and stereo audio via an included breakout cable that terminates in standard RCA jacks. That same cable can act as an A/V input, so you can monitor video from an external source such as a trunk-mounted DVD changer. In addition, you get an S-Video jack. The single digital-audio output jack requires an optional optical cable to pass Dolby Digital and DTS signals to a surround receiver or a 5.1-channel, in-car audio system.

Performance
One of the disadvantages of having a larger screen is that it tends to require more energy. Our unit pooped out at a little less than two and a half hours, which is disappointing, particularly if you're a fan of longer films such as Lord of the Rings or Apocalypse Now Redux.

The big, 10-inch screen is great if more than one person will be watching, and the viewing angle was very good for an LCD--folks to either side of the display won't notice a significant change in brightness. Image quality was only average for an LCD, however; we noticed interlaced artifacts in pans, which showed up as jagged diagonal lines, and many images appeared a tad soft. Test patterns and a quick look at The Crocodile Hunter--perfect fare to occupy backseat boys and girls--revealed a slightly unsaturated color palette, but at least skin tones, scale tones, grass, and other colors looked accurate. The screen was nice and bright, but it tended to obscure details in the shadows.

As noted above, there aren't any screen adjustments aside from brightness, and even that little knob didn't seem to have much influence. We didn't have any problems with the L100's output to a regular TV; the S-Video feed was fine for an interlaced player.

In the final analysis, if a bigger screen is what you're after, the sleekly designed L100 has some strong positives to recommend it, particularly if it finds a permanent home on the ceiling of a minivan. However, for slightly less cash, you can buy Toshiba's SD-P2000, which offers superior performance and better battery life. That player has a smaller screen than this Samsung, but it's probably a better choice for personal viewing. samsung dvd

out standing unit, used for travel

Pros: great screen size. Made a mount for the roof of our minivan and used the reverse screen feature only found on samsung. Have used countless hours without hardly a glitch. Much cheeper and better than built in entertainment systems.

Cons: Upon restart of a movie subtitles appear, wierd~

Samsung DVD L200 great for cars

Pros: I compared the Samsung DVD L200 to Toshiba spd2500. The Toshiba has better technical specs, but suffered from an inability to flip the screen over for mounting on a car ceiling. Also, the Samsung had better side to side off axis viewing. The Toshiba seemed

Cons: The L200 only has a 800x 600 pixel screen and limited picture settings (contrast, brightness, etc), and non progressive scanning. However, it is perfect for my intended role: as a roof mounted DVD player to keep the kids entertained on the way to vegas.

Great picture, good sound, OK menu

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I went ahead and bought this player for the family trips that are over 2 hours in length. For this reason I wanted the largest screen possible which this player has. OK the sound through the speakers may not be that great but I wasn't expecting a home theater, but using my CD audio adapter into the tape player of the car and WOW. I'm ready to sit in my car and have my own drive in movie with out leaving the garage. Also with headphones I was blown away by the detail of the sound. On Beauty and the Beast I could actually hear the rustling of the dress as Belle walked down the stair case before the big dance. I will say if you plan on showing pictures with the memory stick, VCD, or DVD the aspect will not be true and they will be stretched but if it is just with friends and family they'll get the idea. I haven't had a problem showing video through it or even playing my PS2 but you will have to buy the double female RCA adapters, which cost $2 a piece. I don't have the vehicle mounting kit, I just rest it on the arm rest between the front seats so I can remove it and hide it if leaving the vehicle for any time. The battery is nice and small attaching to the back of the player. I preferred the way it attached to the player rather than most players that have batteries that mount to the bottom. I found the battery to last just over 2 hours which can be annoying since most movies have trailers making them 2 hours or more. To get by that I purchased the DVD battery pack by Energizer ($75 at Best Buy) which is 7.4 V the same as the supplied battery even though Samsung says the power in is supposed to be 8.4V. The battery pack has a power supply for 360 min. about 6 hours but I've found it to last about 4.5 to 5 hours. I believe this is cheaper than what the Samsung extended life battery is going for. Another plus I like about this player over the Toshiba 2000 was that you didn't have to be viewing straight on for the best picture. You can actually be pretty far off to the side and still have a good picture. A few drawbacks of this product which have already been mentioned are: 1. battery drains if left to connected to player even with power off 2. menu buttons are only on the remote so if you don't have that you'll lose alot of functions. 3. Gets hot if not allowed to breath. 4. background illumination dial has no real purpose. I gave value a 7 because for the price it would have been nice not to have battery that drains when not in use and more functions on the player would have been nice. I gave support a 5 because I haven't had to use it and have no opinion on it. Quality an 8 because no problems as of yet for the 3 months I've had it. Features 8 because it has alot of things most which I probably won't use like photo editing , c'mon thats for my computer. Hope this helps someone

The Best Unit/Value Available

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I purchased the L100 for $630. Do your shopping for prices have gone UP. While it does have some of the traits complained about with all the other units (i.e. poor speakers, lower than advertised battery life, and gets warm after opterating) none of these detractors warrant purchasing the competition. Note to the Engineers. The battery depleats any time it is attached to the unit. Big no-no in customer convience. Also, why have the Fiber Optic port illuminated if it is not in use? Another unnecessary power drain. Battery life is more in the 2:15 to 2:30 range. And why no long life batteries yet? And why the huge cost? But the picture is marvalous. Features and options numerous. Sound on a quality headset stupendous. For use in an airplane you'll need noise canceling (see Brookstone.com for the best value). And in most cases you'll need some amplification to make those quiet DVDs audible. The only portable amp is at Radio Shack. Temperture build is nominal. I'll plop it on my bare belly while in the hotel room and it never gets uncomfortable. And, thus, amongst the lowest temps noted for the portables. Form factor is like no other and it comes with a screen cover. Aside from the outragious cost and that it drains while plugged into a unused unit, the battery is small, light, and good for a solid 140 minutes. Photo CD feature has a trick to it. You have to use the newer versions of EasyCD to right the files to the disk. It is NOT a Kodak Photo CD format and the feature name may suggest. But it is proprietary software that I have yet to figure out how to create thumbnials for the photo album. My low number for quality is a smak at the engineers for the items noted above. Otherwise, you won't find a better unit. Bottom line: Buy for under $700 and you'll love your purchase.

Snazzy little player

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Very nicely designed with Sony's memory stick embedded. I can now view pictures, play mp3 files, and oh yeah did I mention view DVD's? The form factor of this player is very unique. Its very slim and light and with perhaps the largest LCD screen on the market right now. The battery is attached to the back so it wont get in the way of the viewer.

Memory Stick Works Great!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: No one reviewed the memory stick options yet, so here it is: Just insert memory stick, change mode via button to memory stick, select between audio and pics, and you can go through the pics. I have the sony F717 digicam, and use the samsung as a "large" monitor & instant demo for my pics at shows. Yes, you could do the same with a laptop - not buts. The memory image system lets you go through each image, see a thumbtack overview, or have a slideshow running (at variable speeds). it has a very slow access speed, though, for my hi res pics (1.5 MB JPEGS) it takes nearly a minute to go to the next image. Have not tested the music feature yet. Sidenote: I can not find a supplier for extra batteries, nor are these extended batteries available yet!

Serious Design Flaw

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I just purchased this unit from Costco online. When the unit arrived I noticed that the originalseal on the box was already cut. I assume that this was a return since there was a dead pixel in the center of the screen. Costco has a great return policy so there was no worry there. The real problem is that is is not possible to play a native 4:3 DVd in the normal mode on the LCD screen. All DVDs get streched to fill the screen. Since I purchaed this unit to show my work on to prospective clients( I do wedding documentaries)everyone looks fat. This in my opinion is unacceptable. What bride would want to book me if all of the people in my work look squashed? I told the people at support that all of there competition are able to do this. I had no choice but to return the unit for a refund. what a dissapointment.

Beautiful screen

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I don't normally have time to write a review, but I figured in this case I probably should, since I believe I have answers to many of the issues/problems that people have with this unit. After seeing one at a local Best Buy, I fell in love with the display. It absolutely knocked the socks off every other portable DVD player I'd ever seen. And I've been looking at them since the first model hit the market. I can barely tell the difference between minimal and maximum brightness, so I just leave it on minimum all the time. I was using it on an airplane, and the person next to me remarked that it looked perfectly clear from their seat. It is harder to see in bright light, but all LCDs suffer from this limitation. This unit does get hot on the bottom, but I've used it for several hours in a row and it never caused a problem. Battery life is something over 2 hours, but I haven't figured out exactly how long. I often plugged it into AC power.(Here's a hint: the AC adapter says this unit requires 8.4V, but the supplied battery is only 7.4V. I successfully rigged up a 7.2V RC car battery to work with this unit, and things looked promising - everything played as normal. No guarantees, and I'll still buy the better battery when it's available. But for now, my $40 solution will suffice.) There are some secret features to this unit. The most interesting is the fast forward buttons. To make the unit go fast forward, hold down the chapter advance button for about 1 second. The unit will go into 2x speed. Do it again, and it goes to 4x. From there it jumps to 8x, 16x, 32x, and 128x. Hit play to resume normal speed. If you hit pause while the unit is already paused, it does a frame advance (step). Fast forward in a manner similar to the above yeilds 1/8x, 1/4x, and 1/2x motion. Reverse does not work in pause mode. The unit will restart from a stop point provided it has not been turned off. If you turn it off, or it shut's itself off, you have to start from the beginning again. Also, it wasn't readily apparent to me that you can change things from the display menu, but you can. Works great when you want to turn subtitles on/off, change the sound, etc. Finally, someone complained that they were unable to get it to work with a camcorder. It's a piece of cake. I used the supplied video cable, the video cable that came with my camcorder, and a set of female-female RCA adapters. Hit the AV button twice (first hit sends it to the Memory Stick slot), and you're in business. After using the unit awhile, the sound volume seems to have gotten better. I noticed that the volume control is a bit on the noisy side, and I wonder if it might not take a bit of "exercise" to really let it shine. In the store, it seemed very quiet. In a hotel room, it was way too loud. Basically, I bought this unit to play DVDs on the many long flights that I find myself on, as well as in the hotel rooms. It has performed admirably in both of those situations. yes, it has some quirks that I'm still getting used to, but all in all I'm pleased with the purchase. Mind you, I had $900 in gift cirtificates, so it only cost me $100 additional.

The BEST on the market

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Ok, I read some of these reviews and decided to add my 2 cents. If you can afford this model, approx. $1000.00, it's one not to pass up. Some of the reviews talk aboutthe speakers being bad...but the speakers on all models that I looked at are just the same. Basically they stick. But this is a portable DVD player. I can't consider trying to have a room full of folks try to watch this player...much less try to listen to it. With a standard pair of headphones, the sound is outstanding. Also, in response to those folks that bash this unit. Obviously, they didn't use the remote control to access the extended sound features (3D, ect). These enhance the sound so much more it feels like your part of the action. The first movie I watched was 'When we were soliders'. At points during the movie, i actually thought that bullets were wizzing past my ears. There were also times that I had to turn the unit down, because the sound was too loud. As for the picture and quality of the picture. It's outstanding. For anyone out there trying to decide if this model is the one for you. Before you make up your mind, go to your local Best Buy store. I recommend Best Buy, because they are consumer frneidly and you can 'play' with the unit before you buy it. I actually had the sales clerk unlock the unit and let me hold it up at different angels. At no time did the picture get distorted or fuzzy. I also got them to get me a pair of headphones to check out what the unit sounded like. Sure...if I were to change a few things, I'd like for there to be a few more of the remote control features on the actual unit, but the remote is smaller and as light as a credit card...How can you complain about that. The battery is about 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 hours long. I sent Samsung an email asking about a battery that was more powerful and was informed that it would be available sometime this month. The unit is durable, handles well and is easy to use. Just pop in a dvd and go. I haven't used the camcorder hookup or tried to hook this unit up to the home yet...but come on folks. It's a portable unit Why would I want to??? I had to get a bagt to carry the player and was able to find a backpack style that was made for laptops, which suites me just fine. Because of the size of the screen, the standard portable dvd player carrying bag isn't long enough. I had to call email support and got the standard 24 hour turn around time. Although I would have loved to speak to someone live it's almost common place to have to send questions by email. Not much more to say about this unit...other than I don't regret for a moment purchasing it. It gets a 4 3/4 out of 5 as far as I'm concerned and I'd recommend it to anyone trying to decide which one to buy.

Looks good but...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: My friend and I have been to two retailers in an unsuccessful attempt to replicate what Samsung claims is possible. Specifically, the manual indicates the ability to attach a camcorder for viewing. So far - no luck. I've skeptically emailed Samsung in hopes of some advice or info re: a software update or something. If anyone has been successful in this endeavor then I'd like to hear from him or her!

A superb DVD player.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've check one out in the Consumer electronics show and I had to get it for myself. The 10" on this thing is a sight to behold. The picture quality and clarity is absolutely stunning. I've never seen anything quite like it. The player is ultra portable with a very sleek design. Fellow passenger on my flights have asked me if it was a computer. Obviously its not. =) I love the fact that I can view pictures and also play MP3's on this thing using the embedded Memory Stick. The only down side I found in the player was its initial price. But overall, I think I've found the perfect DVD/CD/MP3/picture player.

Better video than Panasonic LA95, but still there are issues

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought (and later returned) both the Samsung L100 and the Panasonic LA95 and compared them side-by-side using the same DVD's. The screen on the L100 is larger and it has a better appearance than the Panasonic LA95. The audio level (like other Samsung products I own) is too low. A "10" volume on the L100 provides approximately the same audio as a "5" setting on the LA95. With normal headphones on an airplane, I had to listen at "10" to hear the DVD properly. The "advanced" features (like fast forward)on the L100 are only accessible via the remote. Similar LA95 features are available using buttons on the unit. It is pretty silly to have to use a remote when the unit is on a tray table in front of you on an airplane. If possible, I would leave the remote at home-it is just another thing to lose. The L100 comes with a carrying case. The LA95 doesn't (shame on you Panasonic). It is supposed to be possible to view .jpg's using the L100 from CD-R's, but don't count on it. I was unable to figure out how to make this work. I suspect that the disks have to be generated in Kodak Photo CD format. I can't generate these. Samsung needs to allow .jpg's to be viewed from a normal data CD's, not some proprietary disk format. The manual was no help on resolution of this issue. It was also fairly difficult to tell if the unit was even "supposed" to be able to do it using the manual. However, text on the box strongly implied that it was. If the LA95 had a larger and better picture (and allowed .jpg reading), it would definitely be the unit to buy. Panasonic has a much better "handle" on what is needed on a portable DVD player. Too bad the screen was such a disappointment. Perhaps the next Panasonic model will be better. I was able to get 1.5 hours viewing from a fully charged L100 battery. I returned both units because: -I can't handle ANY additional weight to carry around (my notebook and files are almost killing me now) -I worried constantly about the unit getting damaged or stolen in the airport on the plane and in the hotel (I locked it in the room safe). I don't worry as much about my notebook because I don't own it (and I suspect that it would be less attractive to "casual, impulse" thieves anyway). -The cost is too high. The novelty of watching a DVD on an airplane was fun, but I suspect one would get over it pretty quick. My advice: Buy all of the units you are thinking about. Test all at home. Take one on a trip. Return what you don't want. This was all that it took for me to get the portable dvd "bug" out of my system. Now, I don't "lust" after one anymore.

Killer Screen

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Just blows me away. Tip: some wide screen movies look funny, I was able to re-aspect them using the setup-TV picture settings (Wide Screen). This DVD is availale on EBay. Batteries are another matter, and only gets 2 hrs on a battery. Sturdy case, picture is not the absolute best but the 10 inch size is awesome. I think it will overheat if placed on cloth with no air underneath. Pretty good unit for $ 750 !!! For $ 1000, iffy

Best of the bunch but not perfect

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I wanted a DVD for the car mainly, as well as other travel, or a kids room for sleep overs etc. I looked at all of them and the only ones I seriously considered were this and toshiba's 9 in. I bought samsung for these reasons. Toshiba has higher resolution, but the samsung picture seems just as good in detail, also it seems to have a better viewing angle. The picture does not degrade at an angle. The clincher is the 10 in over 9 in. In a car even that one inch makes a difference. The sound for both of these borders on unacceptable. The samsung is slightly louder than the toshiba, not by much. In a car on the highway, max vollume is really not acceptable, and truly you will need external powered speakers or headphones to hear all of the DVD. When plugged to a home theater or headphones, sound quality is good. But the included speakers are a joke on both. The thing I like least about the samsung is that there is no car adapter made for it. You must buy an power inverter because the DC voltage is 8.4, no universal fits that. It is possible to find a DC adapter for toshiba. The samsung also had memory stick. I wish they would hav used a different flash memory medium, this is pretty much sony stuff. But it is nice to have digital images on memory stick, put it in and view your picturs on portable 10 screen. Can also use MP3 files wiht memory stick. Can't compare battery life, but the samsung is lucky to get just over 2 hours. THey say they have a 6 hr battery but i have not seen that anywhere. Lastly, the samsung is thinner and nicer looking in my opinion. Support for Samsung is terrible. Emails take days to respond in broken english. I have yet to figure out what software is supported for making picture CD that can be viewed on this player. You have to shop around to find the best deal. Don't pay $999.

One fine portable DVD player

Pros:

Cons:

Review: After playing with the player for a couple of weeks, there are a few things I have found. The picture is great (checking the picture by itself and hooking it up to my TV at home). It has all the features I need. Metal case feels very secure. The concerns are; battery life is not what the manufacturer states (I am lucky to have any battery left after watching a two hour movie),it took an entire 4 hour layover to charge the battery. The installed speakers are kind of tinny sounding (although it sounds great with headphones or computer speakers). It heats up during play. I would buy again but I wish I could find a replacement battery that lasted longer or knew where to buy another battery.

Tough competiton from Toshiba

Pros:

Cons:

Review: The new Toshiba 2000 has a higher pixel count, and progressive scan and beats it in a number of areas other than the screen size which is 8.9". It blows the LA-95 away that is a given. But hey it's got memory stick and Faroujida or something which apparrently takes out jagged lines so I guess kind of like progressive scan? 10" is also nice but if these portables get any bigger, I'm just going to carry my laptop instead, I still like my Sony DVP-FX1 because it truly is a portable no bigger than a DVD case!

Review: 10" screen....feel like watching a movie on laptop computer. Good design, resonable price and nice features. It's also MP3 player. This must be the best portable DVD player out there.

Review: Hello, dear custumers. I dont recomend this DVD-L100. Its cheap compare with the Panasonic DVD-La95. It will never get close to Panasonic best DVD-La95. This DVD-L100 from Samsung doest not have much features. If you bye it you will regret. My brother have it and its sucks?
