Portable DVD players are joining cell phones, MP3 players, and notebooks as must-haves for discriminating travelers--or at least parents who want to keep the kids from killing one another during family road trips. Toshiba's SD-P2000 improves upon its predecessor, the SD-P1000, by bringing the same excellent, progressive-scan video quality to a much larger screen. While the unit doesn't quite fulfill its home-theater aspirations, its performance and comparatively low price tag should appeal to road-weary parents and business travelers alike.

Design
The SD-P2000 is an attractive, silver player with a fold-up, 8.9-inch, 16:9-shaped LCD. It resembles a baby notebook computer, with the top-loading disc drive and the navigation buttons replacing the keyboard. Available controls are conveniently laid out, allowing for easy access to all standard DVD functions. The included remote provides additional control options and is slightly larger and more user-friendly than most credit card-style units. Small stereo speakers are located directly under the screen, but travelers--and their companions--will appreciate the dual set of stereo headphone minijacks.

The otherwise svelte unit is burdened by the lithium-ion battery that snaps snugly onto its underside. The battery nearly doubles the player's overall thickness and increases its weight from about two pounds to three pounds. A lightweight AC adapter does double duty, charging the battery or providing power, but it cannot do both simultaneously.

Features
At almost nine inches measured diagonally, the 16:9 screen is positively luxurious by portable standards. The SD-P2000 can even display video upside down, in case you're interested in mounting it to the underside of a kitchen cabinet or the roof of your SUV.

Prefer to listen to some tunes on your portable player? In addition to audio CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3 CDs, the SD-P2000 even handles two-channel playback of DVD-Audio discs. VCDs, DVD-Rs, and DVD+Rs also play back with no problems, although this Toshiba can't handle either rewritable DVD format.

Video geeks will love the array of customizations available via the setup menus. You can toggle among three customizable video-memory slots, each of which has fully adjustable brightness, contrast, and so on. You also get standard, faux-surround and dialogue audio settings. Automatic aspect-ratio control worked well to size the image to the wide screen, but it can also be overridden manually. Toshiba's superior zoom mode can magnify the action in various areas of the screen, and a capture function lets you snag any frame as wallpaper for the LCD's background.

The SD-P2000 includes as many connections as any portable DVD player that we've seen. It outputs composite video and stereo audio via an included breakout cable that terminates in standard RCA jacks. The same cable can act as an A/V input, so you can monitor video from an external source such as a VCR. An S-Video output jack is also available. A single digital-audio output jack is compatible with both optical and coaxial connections, so it will pass Dolby Digital and DTS signals to virtually any audio receiver.

Performance
As a portable unit, the SD-P2000's greatest strength is its large, progressive-scan screen. We tested this Toshiba with a variety of DVDs and found the color to be excellent by LCD standards, although reds were slightly orange. The jagged lines and unnatural movement (a.k.a. interlace artifacts) associated with pretty much every other LCD were entirely absent and were instead replaced by the smooth, filmlike stability of progressive-scan video. This player's only real drawbacks are an occasional flicker on some panning shots, and--as is the case with most LCDs--a fairly dramatic loss in brightness when viewed from either side.

Although its battery life beats that of many portable DVD players, we were still a little disappointed in our average measurement of three and a half hours. The detachable battery pack adds significant heft to the unit, and it takes a whopping five and a half hours to fully recharge. We expect enough battery life to at least be able to finish the extended cut of Lord of the Rings! At least Toshiba offers a larger, $200 battery that increases playback time by an additional 50 percent.

While the bevy of A/V outputs is impressive for a portable, the most vaunted high-end feature--the component-video output--performed poorly in both interlaced and progressive-scan modes. The image that we saw on our Hitachi 51SWX20B TV was overly noisy with excessive contrast; the SD-P2000's S-Video output looked significantly better. This isn't a huge issue as far as we're concerned; most users who care about component-output performance will already have a progressive-scan deck at home.

The Toshiba SD-P2000 is a full-featured, portable DVD player anchored by a large built-in screen with excellent video quality. Among the portable competition, Samsung's DVD-LA95 has a similar-sized screen but is not a progressive-scan model. With online prices comfortably less than $650, the SD-P2000 bests the competition and deserves our Editors' Choice award among portable DVD players.

Pros: Size...dimensions

Cons: Unreliable every use. Battery does not stay charged-ever. Failed numerous times. Will not play ANY DVD now and I hardly ever used it in the first place. US military in Middle East (dust is not an issue where I am) and the DVD player simply won't work.

Pros: I have the SD-P2500 which is virtually the same as the P-2000, but since it has not been reviewed I want to add my two cents. The SD-P2500 has a great picture, is fully loaded, and with a good set of earphones the sound is fine.

Cons: I travel by plane several times a month and decided a DVD player would make the trips much more pleasant. I researched most of the available players and decided the Toshiba was rated the highest and would not become outdated in a year. It is full-featur

I love this player, but for long trips, get an extended battery for cheap

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Ditto to all the excellent reviews on CNET, which I found very useful while researching which player to get. The Toshiba SD-P2000 was hands down the best portable DVD player due to its great screen (why else are you buying the thing for anyway?) and thoughtful design (such as two headphone jacks so you don’t have to pack yet another dongle when you travel with the kids; you can also push a button which will invert the image, so you can mount the player to the interior ceiling of your car, though I am unaware of any pre-made mounting system to do this; if you have a moonroof in your car, some simple metal “C” brackets wedged into the gap between the moonroof and your car ceiling would work fine, and you wouldn’t even have to make any permanent holes in your car since friction would keep everything in place). Using www.pricegrabber.com, I was able to find this unit for $515 brand new with a U.S. warranty (www.6ave.com if you are interested). I also noticed that as of 5/1/03 Sam’s Club carries the unit for $549 (if I had known this before I bought on-line, I probably would have chosen Sam’s just for the convenience and easy return policy). I did want to tell people about a cheap alternative to the 5 hour battery pack (the Toshiba 5 hour battery pack costs $180-$200 on the web). Instead, pay approx. $35 for a 12V battery pack, which you can then plug your DVD player into using a car adapter (of course, you need to have the car adapter to do this). The cheapest 12V battery I found was at: http://store.yahoo.com/efunctional/1265.html It works great. This is a 7 AMP Hour model, and is relatively small (about the size of two pocket books stuck together). Not quite as slick as the battery which clips onto the bottom of the Toshiba player, but in my mind the trade-off is well worth it. These battery packs are designed for camcorder enthusiasts who need to do extended taping, but they work just dandy for a portable DVD player. I can get 4-5 hours using this battery no problem, and the nice thing is that you can use the battery for other 12V gadgets (such as charging a cell phone with an auto adapter, for example). The $200 Toshiba 5 hour battery will only work on Toshiba DVD players, so you’d be out of luck once you buy your next non-Toshiba portable DVD player. I also highly recommend the Suspension Theater system, which lets you easily use the DVD player in your car, and provides an excellent carrying case for the DVD player and all accessories. The system retails for $129 at many places, but I found it at www.brandsmall.com for $69.00 (and very reasonable shipping to boot). The best photos of the system (though not the best price) is at: http://www.portabledvdstore.com/sustheatsys.html#buynow Enjoy!

Very good screen

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Very impressive portable DVD player. Progressive scan is nice. Battery live is also nice, and player will work in vehicle using Targus cigarette-lighter-to-110 plug. Using headphone jack with Aiwa noise-cancelling microphone on the plane works well---and draws lots of stares of envy. The one negative: inexplicably, the remote DOES NOT control the volume! What were they thinking?

Just another item to add clutter to your life

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It seems completely insane to me that people buy these things. Americans just loooove to surround themselves with as much stuff as possible, and apparently they are willing to pay for it. The high end of this product's price spectrum ($600-ish) get's you a used (sometimes new) *fully featured* laptop with a 14" or larger screen and a DVD player. For a few hundred dollars more you have a PowerBook Ti (used).

Plays store DVDs very stably

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I baically am saying diddo to all the positive comments already stated here by other reviewers. This player is working well for me so far. I just returned a model by Cyberhome from the Home Shopping Network since it contantly would start to stutter while playing. I had to cycle power to reset it and sometimes this took multiple attempts. The SD-P2000 played all three movies without a single lockup, stutter or problem. I want to add one thing based on a review towards the end of the list by user: kevlarb, 21-Oct-2002. This user stated that you can't use the DC/AC inverters in a car. I just proved that not entirely correct today. I have a Portawattz 150W model and it played just fine. The only problem I had was the DC plug was not tight in the socket at first so the power kept shutting off. Once fixed it played without any hitch. This player is fantastic so far with a bright clear picture. People have complained about the sound. All portables probably have tinny sound since they can't put big speakers in this thing. My son has repeatedly stated that he can hear it just fine in a noisy van. Noise cancelling headphones will probably help still, so I will look for a pair.

Great Picture, but lacking accessories.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this player for my minivan. The picture quality is great, like every review I've read. I also bought the Car/Airplane power adapter (Mito - MIDC740) which is being advertized for this player (SDP2000). However, the plug did not fit the player. The MIDC740 is only compatable with the SDP1500 model. I am still looking for a power adapter. It would be good if Toshiba provided one, as an option. Also, the remote control does not have volume controls. Thank God B&H Photo in NYC were very helpful with advise and refunding my cost.

Great picture but terrible reliability/quality

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought it less than 2 months ago. The picture is great. The first charge allowed playback of about 3.5 hours, as advertised. Subsequent charging (5 hours each time)allowed playback of less than an hour each. This $650+ toy is already broken after just one use. Toshiba Support said to take it to a local authorized Toshiba repair station, but the local repair stations said to send it into Toshiba. No one wants to repair it. Toshiba Support is unwilling to send out a new battery for me to checkout if the battery is the problem.

Great Portable DVD Player with Progresive Scan

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This DVD player is very good. It has great value and is a good purchase for anyone. It is a little costy and you will probably need to look at some accessories such as a $200 dollar extened battery and car adapter kit as the player provides a rather normal 3.5 hours worth of playtime. Its picture is the best for any DVD player I've seen, portable and home players included. Go get one if you already have not!

Great Machine aside from Battery

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I finally took the plunge after looking for a year. I wanted a versatile player along with a quality picture. Some folks don't feel the sound quality is that good, but I think it performs just fine with it's internal speakers - after all, this IS a portable unit. I share the minor disappointment with other folks in that the battery is bulky & has short life. Other than that go for it! Also, purchased at Sharper Image and they price matched - gotta love that!

Spend The Money

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I searched for a long time to find a really good portable dvd player. I was a little uneasy to spend so much onm such a small thing but I am so glad I did. The screen is amazing. A ma zing. No I am not a freak. Also, evryone said the sound wasn't good, not loud enough. I do not have that problem. The sound is just fine. It is a little tinny but it doesn't have a sub-woofer anyway. So I think the sound will be good. Also with some headphones, the sound gets even better. I have only one thing to say against it. The battery. Now, the battery should not be enough to make you not buy it. I tis about 3.5 hours. But spend an extra $150 and get a 5.5 hour battery. Than you have nine hours. Thats more than enough for most trips. And you can get an adapter for your car or plug it in on a train or plane somewhere. Now I got the gout. And this machine makes it easy for me to watch movies and nurse my gout. The battery is fine. The pack gets a little warm but not enough to disturb you. You won't catch on fire. If you do, stop, drop and roll. But other than this, a good player. I have to go put my leg up and try to drain some of the uric acid from my food. Happy Hunting. This is a great one.

Great for parents and kids on the go and the sound is loud enough

Pros:

Cons:

Review: We just bought this player prior to leaving for a one week trip back east. We have a 10 month old daughter who loves the Baby Einstein videos. Every time she started to get fussy, especially on the six hour flights, we just turned on the video and she was very content. I just prayed that the battery held out for the advertised 3+ hours (it did). Despite what the CNET reviewer and many other raters said, we found the sound volume to be fine. It was more than adequate to be heard on the plane and in the car. I guess if a bunch of people wanted to watch from six or more feet away in a noisy environment you might have problems; but who buys a DVD 9" screen to be watched in that setting? My only grip so far is the flimsy latch that locks the screen in the down position. It took only four days to stop functioning.

Excellent for a portable

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It's only natural to compare the Toshiba SDP2000 to Panasonic LA-95. Remember folks it's a portable. Well, OK the battery makes it a lot thicker than the nearest rival (Panasonic LA-95), but then the footprint of both add-on batteries for the Panasonic (either the extended 5 or 7 hr), are smaller than the actual Panasonic unit & I think make it look unbalanced (with a gap all the way around it, plus the fact that you will definitely need to buy an add-on battery for the Panasonic). At least Toshiba have made the battery the same dimensions as the actual unit. In addition, the Panasonic doesn't allow direct connection to a TV via S-VHS (that is, without shelling out more money for a connecting adaptor), let alone also missing the component video-out for progressive-scan (which allows the Toshiba to connect to 2 separate sources in different rooms). Although the sound from Toshiba's on-board speakers are inadequate (& this applies to any portable), it has the luxury of having 2 headphone sockets without yet another adaptor (even better if you buy portable noise-cancelling headphones, such as Sony MDR-NC11). Finally, the remote on the Toshiba is credit card style, rather than the typical larger standard remotes supplied with Panasonic portables. Enough said, just buy it! Cheers. BTW, to answer some of the comments already here, the Toshiba has no multi-region hack, the screen will not display DVDs from Region 0 (PAL) but will output these to a NTSC-capable TV, & use Monster F-F adaptor plugs to marry the cable from the Toshiba to the cable supplied with VCRs, PS2, etc.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Has very easy to use controls, EXCELLENT video, but built in speakers are weak. However, these items were never made to have room filling surround sound quality, but just hang on a set of good sound cancellation headsets or plug in a FM transmitter to use your car system and it is fantastic. I would suggest Toshiba offer accessories like a 12v charger and carrying case to fill out this item.

Extremely pleased!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have reviewed, researched, and tried out all the competitors such as the Samsung 10", the Panasonic LA-95 9", and just about every other out there. They all do not even come close to the quality I've found in the Toshiba SD-P2000. The picture quality and size on the Samsung was great, but the sound, when used through even the best quality headphones, left me feeling disappointed and wanting for more when compared against the Toshiba. The Panasonic was a little better, but just not as good either. The screen on the Panasonic was grainy too, by the way. Picture and especially sound are a must, for me anyway, to get the full DVD experience through a portable player. The dual headphones option was also one of the selling points for me. Overall though, the sound and picture are currently superior in my opinion and all the features within the player are pretty remarkable too. In my opinion this product is top notch and I would not hesitate to recommend the Toshiba to friends and family. Also, I cannot wait to see what else Toshiba comes out with in the future, but for now I'm very satified. Nice job Toshiba!!

Forget the Samsung, Hands down this is THE Best Player

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I am a business traveler, so I am on an airplane every other week. I just purchased the SD-2000 and I love it. I looked at the 10" Samsung model and I was distressed by two things: 1) The Samsung is a big as a laptop computer and almost costs as much 2) The picture quality was noticiably inferior when compared to the Toshiba. Oh, and I have read the Toshiba reviews and have heard people complain about the low sound. The bottom line is this, Toshiba made a calculated business risk. Sure they could have modified this unit for increased volume per the speakers, but that comes with a price to you as the consumer. Toshiba currently enjoys a $200.00 competitive advantage over the Samsung model! Any modification to this unit increase it's price, and the average consumer uses price as the final determinant when making a purchase. Yes, this decision does force the buyer to shell out some extra cash for a good pair of headphones. However, if you have the discretionary income to blow $800 on a portable DVD player, Toshiba is betting you can afford to spend another $100 or so on a pair of headphones. Besides, the buyer has the freedom to price shop on the internet to find the best price on a good set of headphones. Believe, me the low speaker volume is a small price to pay for a player with the best picture resolution, superior interface, and overall features of this unit. Do yourselves a favor and pick one up...you will not be dissapointed.

Excellent but big battery

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I researched thoroughly and got the sdp 2000. It has excellent image quality and 2 headphone jacks which is perfect when travelling with someone else. You can also hook it up to an external tv (in case you were travelling and wanted to watch dvd's in your hotel). The only drawback is the battery life and size. I believe its rated for ~3 hours which is about normal for all portable dvd players, but the battery is the same size of the player itself, exactly, doubling the size of the whole thing. It is still light and portable, but a bit of a shock when it arrived. I got a great deal through a cnet recommended site for ~$600. I think it was digicom or something like that.

Best Portable DVD Player on the Market

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Researched these extensively and decided upon this one. Progressive Scan, 9" Screen, ability to input external video signal to screen, dual headphone jacks....I mean what can the thing be missing? Not much, IMHO. My only complaint is that there is no way to charge the batteries when they are not attached to the main unit. There've been a few times that I wanted to be charging one battery while using the unit (i have the original battery as well as an extended one). Got it for $675, extra battery cost $199 and the car/air power adapter cost $70. This is definitely a luxury item, most people would likely be satisfied watching a DVD on their laptop.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I bought this to keep my 2 year old occupied on our flight to and from Hawaii. It worked great. We could put it on the tray at the middle seat and still watch from each side. Picture is great. Sound is low from the speakers (they all are by the way!), but great through the earphones (On the plane we did NOT max out the volume!). Works well on the Condo's TV as well! They give you two patch cords, one for regular coaxial connections, as well as component cables (for HDTV compatible TVs for the Progressive Scan). No S video cable, but it has the S video jack). Can't recommend it enough.

The P2000 makes a great personal and auto theater!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Folks, first of all I must say that the quality of this unit beats all that I have seen and tested. I work in the video and film industry and image quality is my thing. With progressive scan and a higher resolution (1024x600) than the competition--this is your unit. Forget Samsungs 10"--the picture does not compare--just look at titles and the edges of objects--the detail is NOT THERE! And this little gripe about the built in speakers--give me a break! Whoever is watching a movie on ANY portable without headphones or an external amplifier is due to be sorely dissapointed doesn't appreciate sound in the first place. Now for the good news...with a little creativity this unit transforms your auto into your local AMC theater. Buy the auto/air adapter kit (UNFORTUNATELY ONLY available from Toshiba and one other authorized dealer at approx $100--NOTE: ac/dc converters will NOT work with this unit due to some frequency/hertz electronic anomoly--that's straight from Toshiba tech after I tried it!) Anyway, check out the 3 slotted grooves on the back of the P2000 for the supplied battery to attach to (which has a great 3+ hour life!) If you will mount 3 screws/studs at these positions on your auto's roof then this unit will slide on and make a killer "mounted" DVD unit! The P2000 even has a feature to invert the image when upside down! Unfortunately they do not make a mounting kit for your vehicle so it is up to you to create one. I did it out of 3 screws and a thin piece of aluminum mounted to the roof of my 4-runner. Then I bought an audio adapter that plugs into the headphone jack and into my car's cassette slot. Forget the inadequate built-in speakers on the P2000(if your auto has no cassette then there is also an adapter that plugs into the DVD headphone jack and then broadcasts on an FM frequency that you simply tune your car's stereo in to and...whallah...rich stereo sound!! My family has spent the last few weeks and 4000+ miles on the road without ONE glitch from the P2000--even though it did get hot at times. But did I say that the BEST FEATURE is the PICTURE QUALITY???? IT IS!!! And when you are done traveling just slide the unit off the mount and carry it away for using it elsewhere! But beware...you'll soon have a line of cars behind you wondering what kind of set up you've got in your vehicle! Check out all the built-in's out there...none of them are nearly 9"! This will give all your passengers a great view from the rear. I just traveled in the new Honda minivan equipped with there "high-priced" built in and there was NO comparison. The P2000 wins hands down. And with the handy credit card sized remote and a little velcro...it is always handy and firmly attached to the ceiling of the vehicle until needed! Happy traveling...

Best purchase I've made all year.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: We were looking for a dvd player for our mini-van. Installing one in our van entailed butchering the roof and we weren't willing to do that. So we went looking for a portable unit. This one had excellent picture quality. It's better than my TV at home. It's one of the only portables to have progressive scan and it really makes a difference. When you're looking at a screen that's relatively small, the picture has to be sharp. Of course, at 8.9", the screen really is quite large for a portable unit. The samsung has a 10" screen, but it had poorer picture quality and quite frankly, didn't fit in the area of our van we wanted to put it. You will need to use headphones to hear the sound. The speakers are small, but the sound that comes through the headphones is fantastic! I took this to the hospital with me when I gave birth (another reason it's nice we didn't get it installed in the van) and had a great time watching "Lord of the Rings" while recovering. It saves my sanity on long car trips, too. Have fun with yours!

Better picture than Panasonic LA95

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I started my search for a portable DVD player with the intention of getting the Panasonic LA95 due to its cool looks, features, robust design, and assumed it had a great picture. After seeing and trying one in person, I got a headache from the very noticeable artifacts that were visible when the screen was viewed from approx. 2 feet away. The Toshiba SD-P2000, with approximately the same size screen, did not display any noticeable artifacts like the LA95. The LA95 does have better (louder) sound, than the P2000, but the P2000 has enough sound for me. The bottom line is that the picture on the P2000 was better, no doubt about it.

Great performance

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Performance is flawless. The volume is low. Any more volume will distort sound due to vibrations. A well built DVD player.

Awsome but no DVD-RW

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I got this with a 10% coupon at Best Buy for $720. The screen quality is incredible. The difference between an interlaced scanned LCD display and a progressively scanned one is night and day. Simply amazing. The most recent revision of the SPD-2000 supports progressive component output as well. Awesome. The battery is HUGE. This is not the smallest package when the battery is attached but the battery makes a nice platform for the player's protection. It is stated as working with DVD-R, which I haven't tried but will require to work or I will return it. I did NOT work with a DVD-RW that I have successfully tested on my Panasonic tabletop and my laptop computer. Major bummer for me. The only other player I may return this for is the 10" screened Samsung. Especially if it supports DVD-RW. ENJOY!

Just Got It

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is my first portable DVD. I have held off wating for price drops, quality improvements and refinements. Picture quality appears to be by far the best of what I have seen so far. As with previous reviews of Toshiba portable DVD's the audio appears to suffer. Sound quality is good but there is so little volume you can barely here the audio. What's up with that? I have not yet tried the unit with headphones. Battery life seems ok at least for one movie. An additional 5 hour battery available. I found the SD-P2000 available at Best Buy and Sharper Image for $799. Compared to the Panasonic that I almost paid a grand for last month, I am glad I waited. Also impressed with the new MinTek for $399 at Best Buy. 7 in screen quality not quite as good as SD-2000's 8.5 in prgressive scan but sound volume much better and seems like a great portable DVD for the price.

Great video screen

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Set up was a snap. Lots of features. Easy to use. Great picture quality. Audio volume better than some other models I looked at, but have not tested in the car to determine if it is loud enough without earphones.

Overall great portable

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This unit has many features including a virtual remote plus the slim credit card remote. It is easy to get to all the features. Picture is good. Sound is lacking from the built-in speaker system, but a great set of headphones makes up for that. There are two headphone jacks for multiple listeners. Progressive scan unit at a great price.

Great Picture, no sound volume

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is a great little unit. Wonderful picture quality and nice features. The only complaint is that volume from the speakers is so low that unless there is absolute silence, you can't hear the unit at all. Even with headphones the volume is not sufficient to hear the quiet dialog in a movie. I had to resort to amplified headphones to get this to work. Not something one should have to do for an expensive unit.
