Pros Funny thing I bought this at a Goodwill store for 10.99. This is an awesome buy. It is a basic player for the Zune. Yeah I wish the remote could do more, but its simple and easy. I really enjoy the player. The sound quality is good.
Cons I found nothing wrong with this little player.
Pros Good sound; nice remote
Cons Compatibility with 80 GB Zune is poor
Summary I'll separate my review into FLUKES, FACTS, and OPINIONS:
FLUKE(?): The first iM414 that I purchased was flaky for the first week, then was no longer able to play the output from the Zune. I returned the device to AltecLansing (A.L.), and the next device is working fine (albeit with the same flaky behavior that I'll discuss below). The return process went very smoothly, and I can't fault them for the bad first unit. Any electronics manufacturer will have the occasional lemon.
FACT: The only way I can get the 80 GB Zune to play on the iM414 is to 1) Power on the iM414, 2) Power off the Zune, then 3) connect the Zune to the iM414. Both iM414's exhibited this behavior, so I doubt this is a fluke. Oddly enough, A.L. went out of their way to include a card that described the connection sequence, and this was NOT the order that they specified.
OPINION: The above behavior leads me to believe that the iM414 was built for the earlier Zune models and was considered "good enough" for compatibility with the 80 GB zune, so they decided not to spend money to update it. The physical fit is also poor with this model, as you really need to concentrate to line it up correctly within the slot (due to the extra slack on all sides to accommodate the larger, older Zune model). The fact that A.L included an adapter to accommodate the much smaller 4/8 GB models but did do so for the 30 GB also supports the the "good enough" theory.
SUMMARY: The iM414 is just that... "good enough". I don't regret the purchase, but I think that A.L. could have done much better. If you're an occasional user, then go ahead and get one. Otherwise, I'd advise someone to wait for the next model and hope that they better tailor/test it to the newer Zunes.
Pros Pros listed below.
Cons Cons listed below.
Summary I just received this as a Christmas gift, it is playing in my kitchen, blaring holiday music. It's good quality sound and I'm a happy camper.
*The remote. It's small and convenient.
*The adapter for the 80/120 GB model. It's now included and fits well.
*It's a very handsome gadget and will suit my contemporary style nicely. It doesn't look cheap.
*Don't put the volume up all the way. Sound gets distorted. Really, you wont need the max volume. This machine isn't made for parties. It will not drown everything else out. Buying it for that purpose will be a dissapointment. But the volume is suffcient to fill a room or two, it won't be too quiet either.
IMPORTANT: This IS compatible with your Zune. Do not pay attention to the instructions in the package. If you are not getting cooperation with your Zune, remove it, turn it off. Make sure the machine is still on. While the Zune is off, plug it into the dock. It will turn on again and you will have compatibility with your zune. Easy enough instructions to follow for a well-priced docking station.
Truly, it's a good value. Unless you're looking for a full blown boom box to rush the room with a booming mess of sound, this is great. I only left room for improvement in the rating because I've had it for mere hours. I give myself a little room to renig on its excellence if it poops out in the next month. ;)
Pros Audio quality good for what you pay for
Charges the Zune!
Cons - Product has difficulty recognizing the zune
- Product died after @ 6 months
Summary I bought the unit for my daughter's zune primarily for a charging station and also for the external speakers. The unit had difficulty recognizing the zune and after a couple of times inserting/removing the zune it recognizes the zune. This has been the situation since we purchased it. About 6 months after buying it, my daughter plugged in her zune and the thing died. Apparently, others have had this issue as well and a quick internet search for "inMotion im414 schematics" will reveal the issue. However, there are no schematics to be found on the internet so this one is pretty-much dead.
Buy an Ipod!
Pros Portable and nice sound (for radio).
Cons It's advertized to support 1st and 2nd generation Zune, with the box stating Zune80 is supported. Inside, the adapter provided does not work with the Zune80.
Summary If you have 1st gnereation Zune, I suppose is fine. If it's 2nd generation Zune, good luck. Waste of my time. Contacted tech support which acknowledged that I would need an adapter, so there is duplicity in the advertising (box outside and literature inside says Zune80 is supported). Tech support says the supply of adapter is 0 at present and no foreseeable date for the adapter to be availalbe. So, basically waste of my time. Taking back to store for my money back.
