"SOUNDS GREAT! (but scratches my ipod photo too!)"

by bubbajpeaworth on July 18, 2005

Pros: Perfect system for iPod for the size and portability!

Cons: Light scratches on iPod photo 60 gb.

Summary: This thing cannot be beat! Great bass response! Clear vocals. About as much spatial imaging you can get with a unit of this size. It is just terrific.

Except for one thing: I am getting some light scratches on my 60 gb iPod photo from it. Not anything deeper than one would expect from putting your iPod in the pocket of your jeans. You have to look to find them but they are definitely there. For $250, it really should scratch my $400 ipod at all! That said, it sounds good enough for me to put up with it. If you're not anal, the scratches are just mildly annoying.

I just bought the iM7 yesterday and after inserting my iPod photo and removing it once I have a DEEP scratch across the display. This is not just something you have to look for with a magnifying glass! When the backlight is on the scratch is magnified very greatly and it is really distracting -- its optical effect is is distorting, sotthat it almost looks as though the LCD has a defect. I'm really, really annoyed that such an expensive product should damage my iPod so badly!

I really wanted this so I returned two of them, and the third one fit the ipod photo 60gig fine with no scratching. Altec's customer service response was "it's supposed to fit, and did you remember to take the ipod out of the case?", which I thought was as much inappropriate as it was insulting. However when I compared the IM7 to the other alternatives I decided to keep trying them and lucked out. The problem is with the adjustable piece behind where the ipod mounts. It seems amount that this piece recesses back into it's housing varies from unit to unit. Good luck.
