Pros Excellent sound, compact package and portable.
Cons One piece, heavy.
Summary I've been reading several of the reviews of the new Apple Hi-Fi iPod speaker unit. It seems that a lot of people are forming opinions before ever actually listening to it or have listened to it only in a noisy store. Sure, Apple probably overhyped it a bit, but that doesn't mean this isn't the best speaker dock yet for the iPod.
I went to the store and was impressed enough that I bought one. I have the big spendy speakers and other audio trappings and even Airtunes, but I really like this new device. It's simple (I actually like the minimalist looks), compact and convenient. Even with Airtunes, we don't listen to our music library that much. It could just be the newness factor, but I think we'll enjoy our music collection a lot more now with the Hi-Fi.
Another reason for the purchase is its relative portable nature. I say that advisedly because it is a bit to lug around everywhere. But, we are moving to Europe and this will become our sound system there since its internal power supply will work there (while some of its competitors won't).
Finally, I envision the Hi-Fi as the ultimate tailgate accessory. You could light up the entire parking lot with this guy. Even on batteries, no one is going to top the volume you'll get out of the Hi-Fi. Take one of these to the games next fall and be the envy of the entire stadium!
I think a lot of people will snap this guy up because it's very solid, produces good enough sound quality and also looks nice in any setting. If you're trying to simplify and/or move good quality sound from location to location (outdoors, vacation home, camping, weekend gatherings, etc.) this is the ticket.
We've only had ours a day, but we're already listening to more music because it's so easy. If this helps us leverage the investment in all our music collection and iPod, then it works for me. I probably haven't even thought of all the uses for it.
Pros If played loud, it is good. Stand back though.
Cons Has to be played loud.
Summary I listened to it and thought it sounded fine but the volume was pumped way up. When it is down lower and one stands close to it it really is not that good. The Klipsch iFi is better and the iFi costs less. It is down to 249 at the local Apple Store. If someone other than Apple had released this it would probably see for much less. Save your money.
Pros Great sound, ease of connectivity
Cons Not much better than comparable products, high price
Summary You can get external speakers for the iPod ranging anywhere from $15 to this $350 unit. I've tried most of them out, and there is a definite correlation between price and quality (though some of the cheaper ones were surprisingly good). However, in the bang-for-buck category, I wouldn't pay more than $100 for an iPod speaker system. Anything more than that, and to my ears anyway, the price just isn't justified. Especially when I have a great sounding home theater system that I can use.
Pros great sound for all music.
easy to carry.
charges most ipods.
Cons they are rather heavy, but that doesn't bother me because I just set them down and listen.. who carries around stereos anyway?
Summary The sound great, period. They sound just as good at 5% volume as they do at 95%.. I've had them for many years and use them about 350 days a year. they have been used for hours on end at very high volumes and the sound quality does not degrade. overall their a good long lasting speaker.
Pros 1.The very zen like design
2. Sound is very crisp and picks up the bass notes well.
3. Good for a small room.
4. Use a two way 3.5mm cable and connect my ipod hi-fi to our mobiles, cd players, laptop. Decent.
Cons Can't navigate the iPod's menu. Heavy unit compared to other docks.
Summary I know ipod hi-fi was no great shakes in the market, but I have no complaints, works real well for us. Glad I got it.
