"Music Professional review - Can't beat the On Tour for the Price & compact size"

by Music Phone Book on May 26, 2006

Pros: Sound level, Sound quality, Compact Size, Durability, Price

    Cons: Slightly awkward cover

Summary: I read all these reviews before I bought mine and am very satisfied.

I work in the music industry and JBL is a VERY reputable brand name.

If your looking for some music while traveling this is a sure bet. I was in the carribean for my first trip with it and this was the result.

7 Requests to "turn it down" from other guests at the hotel. This was a resort where the rooms were 30 yards from each other.

While sailing, other boats nearby could hear the music - probably more than 50 yards away and this was in a sailboat with the wind clipping along around 15 knots.

When the bar's stereo crapped out, I grabbed the On Tour and played my iPod for the crowd. Obviously not as loud as the bar's stereo speakers, but I had about 20 people ask me about the On Tour and where they could get one. This bar had over 100 people in it and you could still hear the music in every corner.

The sound quality is amazing considering the size. Does not sound trebbly which is usually the case for speakers this small.

Dont know why other people said the battery life was short. I played it about 4-6 hours a day and only had to replace the batteries once in a ten day trip. When the batteries run low - the unit just shuts off after a few moments instead of getting poor quality sound as other reviewers said.

The only negative is the cover does tend to slide back to the closed position, but not completely. I cut a piece of styrophone and slid it in there which stopped the sliding. Still, even with the cover half closed, the music was still clear and LOUD.

Closing the cover shuts it off and if no music is playing - it shuts itself off in a few moments to save the batteries.

For $99 bucks I am COMPLETELY satisfied. Have bought other iPod speakers and was never happy with any of them: poor sound quality, not mobile enough, way too expensive, too heavy, not compatable with other players etc.

I have put on over 1,000 concerts so I am more than familiar with sound reinforcement. You wont find anything better for the money.

I highly reccomend the On Tour.
