"Simple, sleak, portable - a great match to any mp3 player"

by flanjerka on March 7, 2006

Pros: Fits in a back pocket, long battery life, good sound

Cons: Not very loud, lacks some bass

Summary: I matched this portable speaker set with an iAudio U2 and I'm very happy with it. It's small enough to slide into the back pocket of a pair of jeans, yet still plays for nearly a day on four AAA batteries. I bought some 1000 mAh AAA rechargeables (they have a longer life than any alkaline battery) and they seem to last forever between charges. The speaker turns itself off after a couple minutes if the signal is lost, so I can use the "sleep" feature on my mp3 player to doze off to my favorite songs without killing the batteries overnight. There's not much power on the low-end of the sound spectrum, but I've found the bass can be improved by adjusting the EQ settings on the device you're using, or by placing the speaker on a wooden surface (like a coffee table) that will help carry the lower frequencies. Of course, these small speakers don't "blast" anything, so you'll need a real stereo for loud listening. The case does tend to slide closed a little when set on a smooth surface, but it can't close all the way (and turn itself off) while there's a cord plugged in, so that's not a big deal. The 2 buttons are very simple to understand and work with a light touch. From what I can tell, the "mute" setting you get by pressing both buttons at the same time is really more like "off," so you don't really have to close the cover to turn off the power and save batteries. The included AC power adapter is sideway-oriented (non-wall wart type) to save outlets on your power strip and the stereo line-in cord matches well with the color scheme.

I've also plugged this speaker set into my laptop for DVD viewing and it provided a marked sound and volume improvement over my VAIO's built-in speakers.

Overall, it's a great way to listen to your portable audio device for many, many hours on one set of 4 AAA batteries. It's portable, sturdy and sleek. With handy auto-shutoff, mute and "last volume setting" memory features, the JBL On Tour portable speaker set delivers exactly what you expect.
