"I don't know why it got such a low rating..." on by pennsu55

Pros: Clear, crisp sound, nice base for a little speaker system, cool design

Cons: Pricey, requires annoying assemble everytime you use it

Summary: Why did this product get such a low rating? It is the best portable speaker system I have ever heard.

The sound quality is amazing!! This system has 3 separate woofers which helps the sound clarity. The two detachable woofers focus on the mid and high ranges and the middle sub-woofer just focuses on the bass (low sounds). If you know anything about audio, this will help bring out clearer, crisper sound than just a woofer that does all ranges of sound. The Boomtube does a very good job with clarity; especially for a portable system. I also like how you can separate the woofers up to 3 feet apart to simulate a surround sound feeling.

Price wasn't really an issue for me because Amazon.com was having a sale which I purchased my Boomtube for 60 bucks, can't beat that price. Don't expect this product to shake the floor; look at the size!! For its size, it does an exceptional job at producing bass. It has two dials; one that controls the volume of the system and one that controls the bass level. This is a nice feature to have if you’re not a bass lover. The volume is the best feature of all. It is by far the loudest portable speakers I have ever heard. Much louder than the jbl on tour which is highly over rated.

One thing I do not like about this product is where the power button is located. When I travel, sometimes the power button is turned on and all my power is drained; A HUGE downside to this product. I go to listen to my music and all my battery is drained. Another downside to this product is the design. It is a good idea but a pain to assemble every time you want to use it.

I have tried other products such as the creative i200 travel sound and the jbl on tour and the Boomtube kills these products. The Boomtube is the way to go if you have the money.

    "Great speakers!" on by psustud4331

Pros: Clarity, VERY LOUD, Great battery life

Cons: Cords can be a mess, No "hold" switch so these speakers can be accidentally turned on while packed away

Summary: Here's the deal. These speakers really are the very best portable speakers I've ever heard and as a big audio buff, I've heard 'em all. These speakers are extremely clear and give almost no distortion whatsever even at VERY high volume levels. They distort less than a Bose Soundock and reach up to 110dB(s) (within close range)!

I say these are the best sounding *portable* speakers because they are the best and loudest speakers that run off of *batteries*. They sound EXACTLY the same in either AC or DC mode. So no, they do not sound better than the Apple Hi-fi or Bose sound-dock.

It is true that for something that is called a "boomtube" they could probably use more bass. But you have to keep in mind that this set last about 5 hours, or more, playing at 90% of it's volume level. You can pretty much get around this issue if you have a device with some variation of an "Extra-Bass" option. It works for me.

The battery life is also very good and they don't take to long to charge.

I only have two 'cons' on this system.

First and foremost it has no "hold" switch so these speakers can be accidentally turned on while packed away. This is a huge problem when you want to use it and you realized that it was on (sound or no sound) the whole time that it was packed in it's portable case and is dead when you need it. This product would be almost perfect if it had some kind of "hold" function.

Second, the cords can be a mess, which is a problem that most other portable systems don't have. It would be nice if the cords were retractable within the speakers themselves... kind of like a portable computer mouse or those retractable tape measures.

    THE BOTTOM LINE:
The price is worth it if you're trying to find a system that sounds really REALLY good running off of batteries. If you're planning on using these like a sound dock and will not be carrying them around then I suggest you look towards the Apple Hi-fi, Klispch or Bose Soundock.

    "Way Under-rated" on by lavern

    Pros: Sound and Size

    Cons: Cords and Stuff Everywhere

Summary: I bought these speakers and they really sound good. The bass isn't booming but it is far better than most. It's pretty compact and very loud. only downside is all the cords and speakers and stuff all not be connected. You have stuff everywhere and isnt easty to say lay on the ground or use at the beach.

"I agree ..." on by DaveKS

    Pros: GOOD SOUND

    Cons: FULL RETAIL PRICE

Summary: I agree, with the other users. Sounds best of any portables i've heard/used. I'm also one of the ones who got these for $60 closeout from Amazon and they are well worth that price. Clean bottom and top end as well as mids.Defined sound, i've heard what some reviewers call "good bass" and its a muddy, headache causing throb, some people don't seem to care about focus of sound just so long as it's loud. ame as if I go to friends to watch a movie and ask them to turn down the sub and they man that sounds great, i'm like "don't you care that it's overdriven and drowning out all the other sounds?" it's like "no, i can feel the room shaking with it at that level" even though theres nothing in movie that should be shaking room at that moment not to mention that the sub is distorting. Not everyone is like that but some are.

These while they won't rattle walls of 16x16 room do a good job of providing a clean, acurate "thump" in the range that these size speakers/enclosure can produce, without tons of distortion. Plus the balance across entire range of bass/mid/highs always sounds good.

When I'm at home I use these attached to bedroom TV with about 6ft between speakers, nice stereo sep. Then when traveling I learned to tape a beer cap over the power button before i pack it up, keeps the power from getting drained.

I'll give these a 9, power button is only down side for me.
Everybody who hears these loves them. Biggest plus is stereo seperation along with crisp, clean, defined sound.

"Good, if you can accept the listed prices" on by rufustel

Pros: Good stereo sound, plus some bass

Cons: Wires can be cumbersome (but are needed for stereo separation)

Summary: I got this speaker system on Virgin's original close-out on the model, for $70 through Amazon.com (and using gift certificates to boot). At that price, a nice deal for the portability and stereo separation features--good to carry to and use in an extra room, or outside for a party. The battery life is a bit low (and I actually wish the unit used regular batteries that could be replaced, so that one could have a spare set around). And I agree with the review, that retractable speaker wires would have been nice (and what one would have expected from these)--I got around that simply by purchasing a pair of retractable speaker cords. Unlike other speaker models, it's nice that the tweeters indeed can be separated from the main unit, and, in fact, can be located a few feet away, enhancing the sound--that was the selling point for me.

In the end, a nice set of portable speakers, good for office or portable use, although I don't know about the "new" price.
