"It suffers from many common PVP ailments, but the HDD space is nice!"
Pros: Can have a large Hard Drive, has a higher res screen than Windows Mobile Media Centers, and plays many formats.
Cons: No card slots, very bad resolution to size ratio for the screen.
Summary: In my opinion, this is yet another failed try at making the perfect PVP. If they were not going for perfect, they may have succeeded.
As I list, though the screen has a higher resolution than Windows Mobile based PVPs, it is still too low. I believe this is about the same resolution of a Sony PSP. The problem is that this is not high enough. There is one PVP out now (The Epson P-2000), which has a VGA screen, and the Creative Zen Vision which will soon be released will also have a VGA screen. Both of these have smaller screens, but at 7 inches, the slighly lower than HVGA screen does not cut it.
On the storage side, 100GB is very impressive. That is the highest I have seen for a PVP. Where the problem is is not with the storage, but rather connectivity. Though it has "host" drivers to connect with devices, it has no card slots. You may say, "why does this matter?". For some people, it may not, but if you are one of those people who like to offload pictures from your camera, and you take alot of pictures, you may want to conserve the battery on your camera. Only having these drivers forces you to use your cameras battery to offload the pictures.
To sum it up, this player is perfect if you want to load gobs of media onto your PVP for trips and such, and you dont mind the lower resolution. If you want to use it primarily for downloading pictures, this is not the player for you, but it does look like a nice player. We'll have to wait for some "in hand" reviews.

the av700 can be used to navigate through an external connected directly to it. this means that you can conceivably scale up your storage space to no end. you plug in the external or card reader into the provided female usb connector and you can use the archos to explore the contents of an external. my buddy got the 40gig and has been using this feature very often. i would assume it works exactly the same way for card readers, meaning that YES you can dump files from a camera.

i like this thing, i bought it while in iraq a year ago so while on the long 19 hour flights back and forth i could watch movies, (two full length movies back to back on one charge) listen to music without changing cd's, and plus its memory is alot bigger than an mp3 player. The only thing that gets my goat is that i am still having trouble (since im not good with this stuff) downloading whatever it is i need to get all the video formats to play on it. if anyone has some advice id love to hear it. im sure that if you are a gadget guru you would have no problem, but for us simpletons, im confused by the programming side of the house. but over all, i would buy it again, plus people are always like, WHOAAAA what is that thing..

It's rather obvious that the "reviewer" doesn't own a 700 and hasn't played with one. It is intended to be a PVP with most of the various options required for video recording, editing, playback and storage. The quality of the picture may not be quite DVD standard but only the most pedantic will say it's not very "watchable". If anyone needs a great "multi-function" player then Archos make the ultra portable Gmini or the "ideal" AV 400 series, all of which play MP3s, videos, do photo slideshowshave and have CF card readers built-in. There are accessories for other card types. I've owned both the Gmini and currently an Av 400 unit and both are very good products - they also "suffered" from similar "reviews" from non-owners!! Thank goodness for the people who buy products to suit their needs first and then give honest reviews on them afterwards. That way potential buyers genuinely know what they are in for.

I thought this was the one until I read the specs. Screen resolution is too low. In this day and age one should not have to settle for crappy resolution. Not at this price anyway.

archos sells adaptors for the cards

If you decide to go with the creative or epson, you will not be able to play games, have a nice big screen, or record directly from a tv, vcr, dvd, etc. Those features are key to having a good pvp.
