    "Stop whining this device rocks"

    by jon_f on August 17, 2005

Pros: Great screen, fast access hdd, usb host, tonnes of features

    Cons: Occasionally locks-up

Summary: Just for starters I think the internet is a wonderful place to discuss opinions, but it seems unfortunately that a lot of winging takes place. This device breaks multimedia boundaries, and in a word is amazing. I was a little apprehensive to purchase it due to reading low reviews, but was very pleasantly surprise when I received it.

Confusing controls and interface? I?m not sure what they mean here as it took me around 20 minutes of playing to master the entire interfaces functionality ? it?s far more simple and easy to use than a mobile phone. It?s almost on-par with an iPods interface, and in some instances could even be said to be better due to more buttons, i.e. faster shortcuts.

Below-average battery life? The battery life of this PMP is better or equal to any of the other PMPs or PVPs out there ? at least it has a detachable battery unlike the Archos Gmini or iPod. Just 20USD will get you a spare one too. I get about 4 hours from watching movies, with LCD brightness right up.

Doesn't play DRM-protected WMA or WMV files: This is a good thing and one of the reasons why I purchased this device ? so that I can use my TV Tuner in my computer to record (can record at a far superior rate than any PMP/PVP) and then just drag it onto the PMP. I was surprised and impressed at the range of different video files the PMP could play. This makes this device far more versatile as it doesn?t have to sync with any useless and totally frustrating desktop music managers ? letting the user be the manager.

Issues I?ve had: The only issue I?ve had is the PMP very occasionally locks-up or hangs, but this could be due to incompatible video formats.

Overall: I?d easily recommend this product (as long as you get a warranty with it) as it?s so powerful and versatile. Its also fun watching people?s reactions when they first use it, as most people think it?s totally amazing. It?s an excellent potable hard drive too of course. I just don?t know how long-lived products like this are ? hopefully several years!

Simple drag and drop almost anything from your pc and it will play it. Right now I have several movies, a whole season of South Park, and probably 50 albums on it.

Interface is weird for a day while you get the hang of it. Interface is really as simple as holding down the play button->select browser->video music or whatever you want. How is that confusing?

I purchased this refurbed almost 2 years ago at a 1/3 of the price of new and this thing still works like a charm. I use it everyday at work to listen to music or watch movies at slow times. I also put spreadsheets on it to carry home then fill this thing up with fresh media and other work related things and I am set for Monday.

Doubt you can get them anymore but highly recommend.

I agree that comments of this device is not objective. Many are given by windows-dependent people who want to see an interface to guide them, which in turn slows things, makes you dependent and limits you. I think this device should rate at least 7. I personally think it is better than PMC serie, since I don't use Window$ Media Center. Windows -being the creator of first (?) user friendly DOS- thinks it can continue the monopoly. No way. People should be given options. For me, PMP-120 offers an excellent option.

Does anyone know for sure if the iRiver PMP-120 will or will not play back standard mpeg-2 files? I have the Hauppauge PVR-USB2 recorder and would like these two to work together without file conversions.

    Thanks!
