  • "A Great Media Center Extension"
    on by joshyashi

Pros The screen is clear, crisp and bright. The Windows Mobile interface is very easy to navigate and it also looks very sleek. It is very thin and light. Good included accessories.

Cons Battery life isn't great. The navigation buttons are a little small and hard to press, but you can get used to them.

Summary I bought this player to accompany my Media Center PC and carry around my TV shows. I wasn't expecting it to handle my audio files, because I already owned an iPod, but as I quickly learned, trying to squeeze both on my belt, it would have to replace my beloved iPod. But it did a VERY good job with the music. Because of the bulk (compared to the iPod), I found myself using the included wired remote and leaving the player on my belt (in the wonderful included case).

As far as battery life is concerned, I charge it every night and the battery lasts all day, but I am worried of a dead battery on a long flight which is where I need it the most. I looked at the Creative player because of it's longer battery life, but the bulk of that player would make it hard to carry around the way I do my Samsung.

The screen is rather dust prone, but that's not that big of an issue. Other than that, the screen is everything I hoped it to be. I didn't need to strain my eyes to see it and the detail is incredible. But if you connect it to a TV, the picture is acceptable but pixilated.

The only other gripe I have with it is the buttons. While again not a major issue, the navigation buttons are a little small and I occasionally press the wrong one, but I'm nit-picking.

This is a very good video and audio player. I only know of the integration with the Media Center PC (which is excellent), but with a computer without a TV card, I don't see much use for the device. It's small and it packs a punch.

  • "Very Cool, but downloading is confusing!"
    on by jefforing

Pros It's definetely got the Cool Factor! Sounds great! Perfect for movies on plane trips! Very small size for doing so much!

Cons Downloading content to this thing has been frustrating for me!

Summary I received an iPod 20GB (U2 version) as a gift for my 50th birthday, and I was just in love with that thing! I mainly used it in my car with a cassette adapter while driving. Now that I had a taste for coolish digital music devices, I started to reserach other devices and other available music download services other than iTunes ('cause I am never satisfied with what I already have!). I discovered Napster's new service called Napster-To-Go, a $14.95/month deal where you can download unlimited music to certain portable devices compatible with their service (I do NOT work for Napster!). In looking at their site, I discovered the Samsung YH-999, which is compatible with Napster-To-Go, and seeing that it held not JUST music, and NOT JUST music and photos like iPod photo, but ALSO stored and played video and TV content on a larg(ish)high-quality COLOR LCD screen, I had to have it! So I bought it on-line for $374.00 (and sold the iPod with it's limited black and white LCD screen) and it is everything that I had hoped it would be! It even has built-in speakers, if you can imagine for such a small device! And a wired remote which i have found to be really handy while driving and changing songs.

I love it! I put family movies on it as well as rental or purchased movies from one of several sites that have specific content available for purchase or rental for PMC's.
Of course, reading is all well and good, but if I find myself eating alone, I pull it out of my pocket, put it on it's built-in "kickstand" (also cool!) and watch movies while I eat!

The only problem that I am having is frustrations in updating (Synchronizing) the device with Windows MediaPlayer 10! It seems to go through the updating process differently each time I update it! And the amount of time it takes to update varies greatly, irrespective of what I am uploading into it. The other day I uploaded several movies and about 400 new songs, and it took only 10 minutes to do so, and I went to add only 5 pictures yesterday and it took over an hour to update! And sometimes, Windows MediaPlayer 10 says that "Synchronization is Complete", and when I use the device, the new movies, pictures or videos that I wanted to add are actually not on the Yh-999. So, I sometimes have to do this synchronization process several times before my content "magically" appears, since I have no idea how to control the synchronization process, other than luck each time. I have spoken several times with Samsung's Help Line, but they do not have any information other than the user's manual, which I also have...

But it IS very cool, and it works very well! Other folks my age look at it and say pretty much nothing when I show them the device and how it works.....sort of like, why am I bothering them with this childish toy? But teens and college kids think it is ABSOLUTELY cool, and they try to figure out how to afford one for themselves!

I say get one if you are in the market....I looked at the other PMC's by Creative and iRiver, and I felt that they looked and felt cheap in comparison. It really is a fantastic technology and a fun and useful product, despite my having some slight uploading issues.

  • "Pocket size makes it ideal for people on the move"
    on

Pros It far smaller than all the other portable media players out there. The quality of the software is far better than the PMP. I know I have both. Battery lasts aswell.

Cons HDD is a bit small for real media nuts. Also the conversion process to get the files on the thing can be a lengthy process. Thats said it is automatic.

  • "A more than satifactory alternative to the iPod"
    on

Pros Same price as iPod Photo but with a larger screen, built in speakers, and movie playback. Rich and intuitive interface. compatiable with content from tons of online stores, plus expanding support from MSN video download and MTV Netorks. Integrates with Wi

Cons No dock, seperate power and USB cables. Navigation pad can be a little cramped, would have been nice to have a scroll-wheel of somekind. Not many accessories to speak of yet.

Pros I had got an rca lyra and and when my freind wanted to get one i steered him away from it due to me not wanting him to have the same thing after my bad experiences with it. after we picked it up and i blessed it for him...i was in awe with the fact taht i

Cons It has no stop button, car charger, view pics while listening to music, after your done syncing it...it takes a second or two to load before you use it(but it doesnt bother me!!!)
