"Works Great except for..." on by CeliaTrout

Pros: schedules recording, easy to set up, really easy way to get video onto your phone/pda/mp3/whatever

Cons: so far, doesn't recognize my directv receiver

Summary: Set up is fast & easy, firmware upgrade was also easy. User's manual is very sketchy as this is such a new product. Tried all the 4-digit codes provided for DirecTV receivers, but no go. put a call into SanDisk tech support--the tech seemed totally uneducated about this product--it's very new. However, she took great care to document the problem & promised an answer and call-back in 24 hours. Also bought a Sansa e280 about a month ago, and the video I recorded with the V-Mate transfered perfectly. Playback was awesome--very sharp video for such a small screen and 30 fps. All in all, an inexpensive, cool little device for getting that video onto your mp3 (phone/handheld, etc.)... also accepts just about every flash memory card ever made. I have no idea if this would work with an ipod, since i have never and will never own one.

First of all, I found your comment very insightful and informative. But what called my attention was your last sentence in which you mention that you will never buy and Ipod and I couldn't help but reminisce about my own personal experience. To begin, I'm the biggest anti-apple consumer you can find. I hate the fact that they run their own OS, with their own proprietary software and their own accessories. On top of that, everyone that owns and Apple product, think they’re superior than everyone else because they’re unique. What they don’t understand is that they overpaid for a gimmicky product and we’re not staring in awe; We’re staring in pity. Specifically, in reference to the IPod, I shared your opinion that I would never buy one (although my wife has had several) for all the reasons I already mentioned, and besides EVERYONE HAS ONE! However, after testing and purchasing several options from reliable competitors, (i.e. RCA, Toshiba and others), I finally came to the realization that the IPod is superior not only because of features and organizational characteristics, but because Itunes continues to be the best software for transferring and converting files. I finally gave up and purchase my own second generation video Ipod and I have not looked back. I can tell you from personal experience it’s still the best product in the market. You can take my opinion for what it’s worth. Have a great day and enjoy your SanDisk V-mate.
