"Cnet caught in the act" on by ssjmichael

Pros: Uses PMC, Built in Camera connector, viewed horizontally or vertically

Cons: Bad battery life, doesn't support divx, only has 65k colors, little extras

Summary: My comments are not about this player, but about cnet's review and how misleading it is:

Cnet initially made a mistake and thought the battery life was 20hrs for audio and 6 for video. This is how they rated it then:

    Design: 9
    Features: 8
    Performance: 9

    Mean: 8.7

After they realized their mistake (its really 12/2.5 hours) they dropped the performance score. BUT, although they realized it doesnt support divx natively, the INCREASED the score for features:

    Design: 9
    Features: 9
    Performance: 8

    Mean score: 8.7

Talk about horrible. They would intentionally alter their score just to keep the 8.7.

The score should technically be a 8.3, if not lower since they should also deduct a point for the lack of divx.

C'mon man, get a life! Don't use cnet as a brain substitute!

  • reply on May 25, 2007 by StonedLogic

Those were the manufacturer specs from toshiba.

So CNET had NO way of knowing the battery life was much shorter than TOSHIBA said until they could test it.

I appreciate those people who try to help public understand the product better. I give CNET triple crowns for 'opening' up for all to participate and express our views.

I bought one with 60gb - because of CNET's review. So far....., so good....

I appreciate the observation. I also appreciate that cnet saw fit to update their error and leave this comment post available to users. It's that kind of transparency that builds credibility.

Thanks!!

This person is useless and should even own a keyboard. This coment has nothing to do with product. I searching for that.

I was thinking about getting this product but since all my videos are divx I will keep looking for that ipod killer.

If you don’t OWN the Gigabeat Player, than why the hell are you on here? Just to b_tch at CNET? Do you know how insane and “Fanboy-esque” that is?

  • reply on July 27, 2006 by Shig2k1

Cnet reviews are ALWAYS crap. They tell you only the most basic stuff about the product and they are SO biased... how many references to 'iPod killers' do we have to endure?

The only reason I come to Cnet is to read the comments to the reviews from people who actually bought the product and weren't paid to give it a good score.

[Edited by: admin]

I do not have this device, but after surfing in Best Buy for a couple of hours I have worked that the IPod should have topped it.
Cnet based the reviews on their opinions only. They should base the product on their tests and put the truth out there and not mislead others who may be interested in buying the product.

  • reply on July 14, 2006 by soccer18

Look at the score, it is not 8.7 as you claim, it is 8.3, as it should be, dont get angry over what was most likely a small error

  • reply on July 13, 2006 by themaninthebox

If you're really interested in the product, then you know not to dwell on the numbers - they're just quick reference. You have to read the actual review to get a good indication of how the reviewer felt about the product, and get the full info on how it performs.

Plus, if you folks are so upset about the alleged bias of Cnet (been hearing a lot about this lately) then just don't go to the site, stop posting fake reviews, and let the people who want to contribute do so.

  • reply on July 12, 2006 by epik15

I find that cnet's reviews are not all that great as well.

But as long as you don't base your purchases soley on this site I guess some information doesn't hurt right.

  • reply on July 5, 2006 by WillFitzger

This is such a minor problem with cnet ur talking about .4 dif here like why the hell does anybody care let cnet review the products and if there is a major problem that is worth "catching" them on then post it somewhere else not on the product itself. Why are you going around cnet trying to catch them out anyway like seriously get over it!

  • reply on June 29, 2006 by saxplaya13

First off, if your review isn't on the selected product then don't send one at all. Next, the problem was corrected. It was a small mistake that anyone could have made. It doesn't mean that we all go full on against c-net to burn them at the stake. Chill dude. It's not like they had a conspiricy theory to diminish your hopes and dreams.

  • reply on June 24, 2006 by PaulSoto

Hey CNET are you there. This is the way I see it: you guys don’t care and even more, you guys got caught in action and are not saying anything in your favor. I think you really don’t care

  • reply on June 12, 2006 by lacoyle

I use Cnet to help evaluate products. Everything has to be taken with a grain of salt. I appreciate that being pointed out with the specifics of this review.

  • reply on June 12, 2006 by jokunok

I, and probably a lot of other people, come here to read reviews on specific products, not your review on Cnet. Please keep comments and ratings product-specific in the future. You're wasting people's time and skewing the user opinion ratings.

  • reply on June 11, 2006 by ubrikkean

C|net corrected the mistake, which is all it was; the review now says 8.3. Maybe even when you read it they just hadn't finished updating it yet. I still think it was extremely inappropriate for you to give a permanent review on a product that your review was not based on, when you focused on an impermanent aspect.

  • reply on June 5, 2006 by Utew

ssjmichael caught an obvious error in judgement, it has been acknowledged and corrected.. as it should have been.. but it begs the question of just how reliable CNET's reviews are.

I own a Zen Vision:M, and I think it's the best player for it's size and features right now.. when an objective in-depth review of the S30/60 becomes available, I may change my mind, it's a really great looking piece of kit.

... but this review isn't it..

  • reply on June 5, 2006 by urr_quasdim

They DID reduce the score to 8.3 due to lower-than-expected battery life. If you just give them a chance, you'll find that they are not so biased after all.

  • reply on June 5, 2006 by jmhwood

I dont think this is just an isolated incident, this one was just noticed. I've found a lot of Cnet reviews that appear biased to me. They love most MP3 players that arent the iPod and never feature the iPod in their most wanted, or best list of MP3's. Good job catching some of the bias.

    right ssj?

  • reply on June 4, 2006 by Albert Liu

That is really useful to know. I think I read it also on epiZENter.
