Pros: Excellent GUI, integration with WMP11, excellent screen, durable and very portable
Cons: WMV9 Video only
Summary: As a recent Mac to Windows switcher, I wanted to purge myself of everything Apple (including the iPod). However, finding a player that is better then an iPod seemed impossible until I found the Toshiba Gigabeat S.
The Gigabeat's interface (GUI) is amazing. The player makes accessing any player function only a single or double button push away. What's especially nice is the ability to access the main menu with the push of a single button. The separate power button is a feature I really appreciate (I hated holding down pause on the iPod).
The Windows Media Player (WMP) integration is amazing. The urge music store included with WMP11 works perfectly. The audio quality sounds far superior to my iTunes experience.
Watching movies or viewing pictures on the Gigabeat is what really made me realize the iPod is out dated. The picture quality on the Gigabeat is excellent. When I showed some pictures to a co-worker, his only comment was “those pictures look amazing.” The video playback also has excellent quality. I ripped Season 1 of Oz onto my Gigabeat and couldn't believe how much I enjoyed the video. The quality of the screen is one of the biggest benefits of the Gigabeat.
Finally the Gigabeat is durable. I work in a hectic office environement. When I put my iPod in my pocket, it got scratched up the first day. Same pants, same pocket and my Gigabeat looks just as good as when I took it out of the box.
The only downside to the Gigabeat is that it only plays WMV9 video files. However if you use WMP11, when you sync the Gigabeat with your library WMP11 will automatically (and quickly) convert the video files you have to the correct format.
Overall I HIGHLY recommend this product. The Gigabeat makes the iPod look like a 1920s record player.
