What professional photographers use for slideshows

Pros: Most fun of any slideshow software on the market, bar none. This is the one pro photographers use, because they want to focus on the photography and have the slideshows simple and fast to produce.

Cons: Minor quibbles only.

Review: First things first: this is not a Powerpoint wannabee nor is it a full-featured video editor. What it is is the best slideshow software hands down, and I've tried them all. Photodex makes Proshow Gold for consumers and Producer for pros. The reason it's the best is that they put the most important features close at hand and the workflow is very smooth. Let's face it, when you're making a slideshow, the things that matter most are pan and zoom, cropping, simple photo editing, great-looking captions and transitions, and the ability to drop in a soundtrack and have it line up with the photos. Most of all, the reason I like it, is that it's a blast to use. Have you tried Vegas or Pinnacle to make a slideshow lately? It's a tortuous affair that leaves you feeling totally burned out and frustrated. ProShow, on the other hand, is really simple to get good results so the "instant gratification" factor is high. And unlike one of the reviewer's comments, I've never had trouble burning CD's, DVD's, making any type of video file, or publishing to the web. But forget about what I'm saying- go to www.photodex.com and download a trial version and see what I mean. I should own stock in Photodex!

Limited value.

Pros: Nice when working.

Cons: Crashes often. I call tech support every time I start a new slide show. Now, I cannot even view slide shows on line. Two tech support guys can not figure out the problem

Review: I'm searching for something I can't count on.

Great software

Pros: Easy to use; nice slection of transitions; nice land simple layout for adding photos and edtiing variables; zoom and pan is incredible and you can customize exacltly how you want to bring in any picture or transiton

Cons: adding text through captions seems a bit limited; for example I was not able to add a caption cloud like in newspaper cartoons

Review: I bought the software after trying to make a photo montage for my upcoming wedding; the program has really impressed me after trying some others including Ulead ans Inalbum3, not that these are bad. Great product.

Tools more sophisticated than program files can handle

Pros: Endless artistic possibilities

Cons: Not good for big shows

Review: I bought ProShow Gold 3.0 in July 2007 when my attempts to produce a travelogue on a trip to South America failed in MS PowerPoint. I especially like the soundtrack timeline in PSG and being able to accurately synch songs to transitions and special effects. (One thing about those transitions however, though they are tons of fun, with the many special effects you have to be careful not to overwhelm your content with a "bag of tricks.")

Anyway, this year I am stalled trying to produce another travelogue--this one of a trip to China. Last year's show contained 120 photos and about 8 songs. No problem. This year I've got almost 300 photos I'm using, about four video clips, and 12 songs, and many more motion effects. The cache file is up to 225 MB; deleting the .pxc files as recommended by Photodex support does not help. My computer should support the program according to the hardware specs from Photodex, but it is now taking 6 hours to load this show and is unresponsive when it gets there.

Customer support via email has been excellent on the occasions I needed to contact them, both last year and this year. I do not know why other reviewers have not fared well with customer support. But the problem seems to be that all the glitz of the special effects cannot be supported by the framework of the program. They should amend the marketing language where they say the number of photos and songs that can be used is "unlimited." Certainly, there are limits! I was advised to beef up my memory to 2GB (from 768 MB). I may try that since I do not want to lose the show. Customer support also gave me an option to split the show apart and put it back together at output, which is not acceptable to me. I will say I have had no trouble burning DVDs though, and I have an external DVD burner.

I'd say if you intend to do small shows the product is excellent, but if you are trying to make a major motion picture, it's like Schroeder playing Beethoven on a toy piano.

Excellent presentation maker

Pros: Ability to add music and edit it. Variety of output media. Excellent support.

Cons: Resource hungry. Some DVD drives not supported. Poor help documentation.

Review: If you need a presentation package that supports the addition of music, then this is the one for you. It will automatically adjust the presentation timing to synchronize with the music. However, the presentation interface is a little messy but is relatively intuitive. I had a problem with output creation to a USB Plextor drive as well as a hanging package. As promised Photodex support answered the email within 24 hours and solved the problem. This package is resource hungry especially when creating the media.

A well written piece of software

Pros: Easy to use and impressive results

Cons: Won't print presentation to paper

Review: I bought the program and never got around to using it. Then my wife had a friend die and she volunteered me to make a presentation of her life for the funeral. I scanned the pictures and then imported them into ProShow Gold. I grabbed the music off CDs using ProShow and within a a few hours, the 276 picture presentation really looked good. During that time, most of the time was spent scanning and about 2 hours on ProShow. I called Tech Support once and they were very helpful and easy to reach. Because it was so easy to use, I have made many more presentations of family with up to 380 pictures and it has never locked on me once. With some experience, I can now put together a presentation in about an hour. The hard part for me is deciding on which pictures and music I want. Once that is decided, the software is easy to use.

The photo editor is pretty good and I wish it could print some of the edited pictures with the annotations from the presentation but it can't.

The reviewer missed the point of ProShow Gold. It is not close to PowerPoint in its purpose. I know and use PowerPoint all the time but I would never use it to put music to pictures. ProShow is infinitely more effective in dealing with music and pictures than PowerPoint.

This is my experience and I hope it has been useful to you.

ProShow Gold using 3 yrs a big disappointment.

Pros: Easy to use interface.

Cons: Constant battle to keep it running and burning good dvd's

Review: I'm a professional photographer and bought this program that was endorsed by other outstanding photographers.

I've been using this software for 3 yrs now. I have truly loved it for it's ease of use. Drag and drop system. It's gotten better over the years as its gotten auto rotate on pictures and better music manipulation. This program is great for small productions. 20 to 50 pictures. The program can't seem to handle a whole lot. It constantly freezes and shuts down (it does have an auto save feature that they obviously needed). I've also had many problems with the writing process. It's wasted many a dvd for me. Not all dvd players recognize the burn as well.

For those who run on a network this is definitely not the program for you. I've talked with customer support and they stated to me that the program will not operate with pictures on another computer over the network.

Today I had my last straw with the program and will be finding something else.
Thanks!!! and good luck!!!

Plug-in Not Mac Friendly

Pros: Great level of control; Full featured;

Cons: Best output requires a web plug-in not compatible with the Mac OS.

Review: I mark this program below average because when exporting in the "Web Show" format Mac users are not able to use the necessary browser plug-in. This is a HUGE problem for anyone who plans on releasing slide shows into the "wild" of the Internet or even share photos with friends who own Macs. And in my experience, the "Web Show" output is the only one that really sings. The DVD output tends to crop your photos and the other formats are not as crisp as the "Web Show." The fact that the company has made little or no mention of this on their site also has me marking the product down. Lets hope they make some changes soon.

Best I've seen so far

Pros: After trying many products >>this one has the most features

Cons: Needs a way to have some premade templates

Review: Many of the ones I've tried had great transitions but poor audio....or great audio with poor video... or limited output formats.... This one is the closest thing to what friends and I have been looking for. I'm old fashioned and downloaded the program and got the CD. I just wish that I had more time in the day to use this....If you like slideshows of you photos with music...this is it!
Updated
Proshow is for showing and archiving slides....and that it does very, very well. The display is great, the audio handler is adaquate and if you can find something better for the price (or even twice the price) please let me know.......

Love it. Fun to use.

Pros: Easy and fun to use. Great product for the price.

Cons: Would like a user guide that is more detailed.

Review: I bought this product about 6 months ago after trying another highly rated program. After some start up aches and pains with Vista, I have found this product easy to use, logical, and have been able to do various types of slide shows from easy straight-forward shows to shows with more complex transitions. I did not buy this program to do charts, etc., and don't believe this should even be an issue. Afterall, that's why Powerpoint is there.

Some of the problems the other users have had, I have not experienced. Dropping in a sound track straight from a CD has been relatively easy. I have not had trouble burning to DVD, only in trying to find a format that will play on my DVD player. I have also found Photodex to be responsive to my questions. Perhaps, some of these past issues have been resolved. I love the number of transitions available and also the fact that I can link up editing a photo in Adobe Photoshop Elements. I also don't understand the big deal about printing a photo from this program, when Adobe Photoshop Elements or other similar programs are available to do that.

I'm having so much fun that I have started to think about whether or not I want Photodex's professional program.

previous versions better

Pros: more information

Cons: large memory hog

Review: i would stick with the old versions and not upgrade

My favorite application, bar none!

Pros: Easy to use with minimal learning curve; Great motion effects; Bug-free; Numerous output options

Cons: Emphasis on digial pics - not video input

Review: I can't fathom anyone (much less the Cnet reviewer) giving ProShow Gold an average review. I've been a Proshow Gold user for over 2 years and it has worked flawlessly for me every time. With minimal time learning the application, you can develop a terrific slideshow with motion effects and background music, and burn a DVD in a matter of minutes. Or create an executable and video CD on the same CD. ProShow Gold lets you have full control or you can choose to let it randomly apply transitions and motion effects. I've turned on several family members and friends to ProShow Gold and they love it too.

In fact, I came to this site to capture the URL address of CNET's review so that I could pass it on to a friend. I just knew it would be a raving review. Boy was I surprised - and disappointed.

Problems adding music

Pros: Can include video clips, burn to DVD

Cons: Balks at adding music , lack of online support for problem

Review: The program is unreliable when it comes to adding music tracks. It distorts the music, plays a bit of one track, then skips to another. It promises that you can rip music from a CD into ProShow Gold directly or into the slide show you are creating. Neither worked for me. I have e-mailed support about the problems but have had no response. I'm back to using Photoshop Element 4.

Buyer Beware

Pros: Lots of features that you cannot use

Cons: Un reliable

Review: I would not recommend or suggest buy. I purchased less than 1 year ago and it has NEVER operated as advertised.

Program frewuently locks up and burns non-usable DVD's. Tech support promises help, but you never hear from them again.

Not being able to use all of this programs featue and having to use "work arounds" to try and get it to work is unacceptable and not what I paid for. Have wasted over 75 DVD's over the last 8 months trying to get this program to work. (Reinstalls and updates done.)

In my opinion, Buyer Beware!

Great product for the price. Many transitions, easy to use, good price.

Pros: Records DVD, VCD's in PAL mode. Easy to use with 100's of transitions. Music can be added to your show. Drop and drag technique. Can use with very little knowledge of the product.

Cons: Uses allot of memory, make sure you have enough RAM before purchasing this product. Check requirements of the priduct

Review: I bought this product after trying many different software packages that would make slideshows with transitions and music. I know there are better programs out there available for hundreds of dollars but for the price of Proshow Gold you can produce a nice slideshow with very little knowledge. Just a fun program to use and very easy to learn...

PROSHOW ROCKSSSS

Pros: it is great at what it does

Cons: it doesnt have any

Review: Proshow isn't supposed to be premier...its a quick, good picture movie creator. It is all auto matic, and its great

Hello? This isn't a PowerPoint Wannabe'

Pros: Great for Professional Photo Presentations

Cons: Lacks Fine Timeline Adjustments / Audio can be quirky

Review: It would be nice if CNET compared apples to apples in their reviews. ProShow is great at what it's designed to do - present still pix & video inserts with spectacular effects and sound.

No charts & graphs? When's the last time you presented your photos with a sales forecast or bullet list?

ProShow's import & output options are also excellent. Next time you use PowerPoint, try to output an EXE file. You can't even view a PowerPoint presentation on a PC that doesn't have PowerPoint installed without Microsoft's proprietary viewer (which has it's own pile of quirks).

CNET's reviewers should determine a program's PURPOSE first -- and then compare it to similar products. ProShow fulfills it's Purpose and then some. And for very short money.

Great Product...Reviewer missed the point with his rating

Pros: Makes great slide shows...not intended for business presentations

Cons: Nothing that hasn't been fixed by recent updates

Review: As a professional wedding photographer, I've been using ProShow Gold (version 2.5) for nearly two years. I, as well as all of my clients, have been entirely impressed. In my opinion, the reviewer criticized the program for not being like PowerPoint, but if you go to Photodex?s website you will see that they are not trying to make another presentation tool for business or educational purposes. Instead, they are tailoring this program to the photographers and multimedia artists that want to present a story through pictures, sound, and video. The program is so easy to use though that anyone can put together a great slideshow. The reviewer did say that this program was the best at making slide shows, and I would agree. I just think that his score of a 5.3 is based it not being like PowerPoint, and from my experience I?m very glad that it is not like PowerPoint. For what it is intended to do, it is so much better than PowerPoint.

Spectacular

Pros: Amazing Results, Lots of options.

Cons: Slllooooww in creating DVDs.

Review: I have made about a half dozen slide shows with Pro Show Gold and I have never failed astound the people that I show them to. I made shows for my step-daughter's shower, and broke a recent trip to Ireland down into several shows by theme. I have made other family shows also.

Creating the show itself is very easy, straightforeward, and ituitive. As C-net metions, the interface can be croweded if you don't have a lot of real estate on your monitor. I have a 19-incher and it isn't a problem for me.

I have created output to VCD, DVD, Exe, and web shows. Compiling the show to burn to a DVD takes quite a long time. (Maybe a P-IV, 1.2gig with 1 gig of RAM isn't enough horsepower.) It took 4 hours to compile a 20 minute show with high quality video and audio options. The other problem that I have run into is that I can not get DVD menus to work on my Bose Home Theater. They do work on most plain old DVD players, though. I consider this to be only a minor annoyance. Documentation could be better organized.

As I mentioned, the results are spectacular. Check out the Photodex website and view the sample shows. Believe me when I tell you that you can do as good or better. All in all this is an incredible product. If you want text, use Powertpoint, this baby is for showing off your pics!

Honestly, the best slideshow software out!

Pros: Easy to use, all file formats, hundreds of effects

Cons: haven't found any....yet

Review: After using a couple of "presentation" applications, I decided that Proshow Gold was the ONLY one that did what I wanted. MS Powerpoint is great for a sales pitch/presentation but its not specifically made for video & pic slideshows. This is Proshow Gold's domain. There are hundred of effects and trasitions to choose from. You can even combine two for a custom look.
It will read any pic & vid format too, which can't be said for other programs.
I like the ability to open, position, edit, & do everything to your pics all in one application. You can even burn them straight to a DVD or CD.
P-show gold is easy. Not too much to say
Tech-support was nice too.

Nice Software package

Pros: Easy to use, Nice fade effects

Cons: Some CD/DVD writing compatibility issues

Review: After using Proshow Gold, I have not wasted my time with any other slideshow creation software, including Nero's or VCDEasy.
Its super easy to use. The ability to add soundtracks and fade effects is very nice.
I was able to take pictures christmas eve and create 3 slide shows christmas morning for the extended family to watch.
In the past I have created a DVD which did was not readable, but this may have been a problem with my burner.
Real nice professional package. I do not know why the cnet reviewer gave it such a low score and what he was comparing it with.

User Rating: 8/10

Top notch application for Video and Photo shows

Pros: Technical Support

Cons: A little bit unstable

Review: Great product for creating photo and video shows. Can burn to DVD, SVCD, or create an image. Can rip audio from CD's. Complete control over audio files and synchronization to slides.
Tehcnical support is excellent and included.
On the bad side, the product is a little unstale when writing to DVD. I found that writing to a file is better, then using a program called DVD decryptor to burn works best.
