"Warning! Blotches, smudges on screen"
Pros: Beautiful TV, great sound, great picture
Cons: The frickin' splotches
Summary: My experience echos this guy's exactly: http://reviews.cnet.com/4864-6484_7-30994111.html?messageSiteID=7&messageID=986287&tag=986287&cval=986287&ctype=msgid
I bought a floor model that had been running for a while, and at the store I checked for the blotches and there were none. I took it home and the next morning I turned it on and lo and behold, there they were! They go away after 2 hours. Circuit City, who has been great about this whole thing, btw, replaced it with an inbox model at no extra cost. The first thing I did was check for the blotches, and it was clean and I was happy. 2 weeks later, they appeared, in the exact same pattern, which is a sort of U shape.
The funny thing is the guys at the store act like they've never heard of this thing, even after I talked with the manager and sent him a link to these reviews after the first TV was replaced. Frankly, I don't think they believe me, and I'm not going to bust my ass educating them.
Rather than risk the blotches appearing after my 30 day return policy expires, I said screw it and went for the Sony Grand WEGA. It's too bad, because I researched the hell out of this TV purchase and loved the Hitachi. The Sony was my second choice.
Watch it! The guys at the store act like this problem doesn't exist, and it takes time for the problem to appear. The fact that it's the same pattern and happened to me on both TV's indicates a definite manufacturing defect. I think Circuit City is just going to sell my returns as "open box" and hope that the new buyer doesn't notice. If you have to have this TV, better get the extended warranty to cover your ass.
