is a .... NIGHTMARE
Pros: TV worked for a week
Cons: See below- and its even worse
I bought an HDTV large screen TV in October of 2005- It worked fine for a week and then conked out. Its now January, 2006 and I still don't have a TV. Every time I call JVC I get a runaround-after a half hour on hold.
I have been told over and over thats its just a 'minor part that is needed'. The first time it took them three weeks to get the part. It still didn't work. Today, Jan 5, 2006 I was told that its another part that is the problem but they won't have it for a few weeks.
Their 'factory authorized service centers ' are another horror. One was incredibly rude after I complained when
Upon complaining about this, the 'Corporate Executive' I was speaking to ( I, long ago, have bypassed customer service and called their corporate offices) told me there is nothing they can do about it and hung up on me.
I can't tell you how annoying and upsetting it is to deal with a company like this. If I ran my business as they do, I'd last a week. I urge you to avoid any JVC products. I'm sure most are fine BUT if you have a problem I'm pretty sure you will get the same horrible treatment as I have gotten.
Update- I just informed JVC 'team leader' Marco'-he refused to give me his last name- that I was going to post this letter on several websites. His answer was 'go for it'. This is representative of the kind of treatment one can expect from JVC

lousy product, inept customer service
Pros: can't think of one
Cons: JVC doesn't stand behind product.

Excellent with proper signals.
Pros: Bright, color correct, no halos or rainbows, and great sound. Fantastic movie like picture.
Cons: Slight overscan.
Bulb life is 5000 to 6000 hours and easy to change by home owner saving an expensive service call. Highly reccommend.

6 months after purchase - optical light engine failed
Pros: It brought tears to my eyes when it worked. HDTV was awesome. Best picture I've ever seen.
Cons: Fan (3 of them I understand) was a bit noisy - had it checked by a tech. All was fine. Could not hear fan noise in store. Only in a very quite house. Not really an issue
My set is a JVC HD-52Z585AA purchased from Video Only in Clackamas, OR. I will buy the extended warranty. >2000 every six months is not an option.

After 4 months light engine died, JVC refuses to replace set. Part on back order NO ETA.
Pros: Was an outstanding picture
Cons: JVC will not stand behind this product.
JVC will not replace the set, they insist on local Technicians replacing the ($1500) part.
Techs are reporting it could take 4 weeks before it is replaced as the part is on back order. Techs also say this is 4th they have had in the last 2 months.
Avoid this set until they work this issue out.
We loved this set until the problems.

Great TV, Bad Support

Cons: Warranty Service

Fantastic. When it works.
Pros: Picture quality is phenomenal for the size and price.
Cons: Delay in powering up, fan noise, faulty lamp, and a recall.

Excellent T.V. Had to compensate things for the size...
Pros: 52 inches, no glare, crystall clear images
Cons: Deep blacks are a bit muddy. THATS IT!!
With that said, you can really trust me with my observations I have made on my 52" JVC D-ILA TV. At first I was all about the DLP. Thats all I knew. Then as I researched, I found that it wasnt all that it has been hyped up to be. I did go to Best Buy and compare the two sets and the thing that stood out most was the BRIGHTNESS of the JVC. It made the DLP sets look dull. Then I saw the Panasonic EDTV, which is a MARVELOUS plasma for the price, but I wanted something Bigger for the football games. The JVC was perfect. The only problem I've had on my TV is that the blacks on HD signals are really muddy. I was watching a space movie and I could really see the problem. Thats it though. Fan isnt that loud as people say.

Cons: fan is a little loud

Great Picture, Very Noisy Fan
Pros: Great picture
Cons: Very noisy fan and poor stretched image option
The other issue was the stretched image. When trying to view 4x3 images, the set has a stretch mode. However not only does it stretch the sides (which is does) is also stretches the vertical (which it should not). The result is a cut off image which is ususuable.
JVC needs to get their act togeher and fix what would otherwise have been a great set.

Best Overall Performer
Pros: Wide viewing angle, no screen door, brightness, very close viewing distance possible, colors, standard definition cable images, quick source selection on remote, narrow horizontal width to screen size
Cons: Some pincushion, needs another component input and another HDMI input
Four months ago, I knew absolutely zero about HDTV. All I knew was that I wanted to watch my wide screen DVDs on a widescreen TV. So I started shopping. I spent a minimum of 30 hours (probably closer to 50) looking at ALL the technologies at seven different stores, talking to everyone I could, friends, acquaintances, HDTV websites and salesmen and then diving back into looking at the TVs again and again. First thing you need to know - trying to make a decision based on what a TV looks like in the store is very risky. In many places, great TVs may only look good, even awful and poor TVs can look OK. Watch yourself.
OK - after all my work I had boiled it all down to one of three sets: the JVC LCOS, the Sony KDF55WF655 LCD and the Toshiba 52HM94 DLP and started watching them exclusively.
I axed the Toshiba for two reasons. I have a lot of ambient light and I watch football. The DLP did not cut it for watching on Saturday afternoon. It just could NOT get bright enough.
I loved the Sony. This is an excellent set, great picture, beautiful even when off but... the Sony's quality depended on two things - that you sat in it's sweet spot and not too close. After hours of looking at this set (literally) the screen door effect just finally got to me. If you never plan to sit anyone closer than 7 feet to an LCD or more than 30 degrees off center - the Sony may be the TV for you. It wasn't for me.
When I got the JVC home, all my work came to fruition. With the TV in the corner at a 45, anyone in the room can see the same quality image. The viewing angle is that good. You can sit from as close to 4 feet with an HDTV source and 6 feet with a quality DVD player ( I own a Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi hooked to the TV via component). With no Screen door effect to worry about and the awesome colors of this set, the image seems to have weight, substance. Every person coming to my house to see this set uses the word beautiful at least once. With a test pattern - I can definitely see the pincushion effect but even knowing where I need to look, it just isn't a big deal while watching anything else other than test patterns. Nature, moving images, camera lenses and angles do more to straight lines that than any pincushion effect present. I usually watch with friends about 10 feet away, but with a true HDTV signal, I can sit just 4 feet from the screen, dead center and get a good as theater viewing.
Try that with any other TV product out there. Nothing else is like this set in this price range. That's probably why SONY's $13,000 flagship qualia uses the LCOS technology instead of the LCD in their consumer sets.
Finally, after owning this set for months, I went back to the best stores to view the Sony and the Toshiba. After just a few minutes I went back home on a cloud, knowing I had made the best decision for my needs.
don't listen to the naysayers that contend this set has a poor picture with a standard analog cable signal. It has excellent performance on an anolog cable even if you use a splitter.

The Jag of TVs
Pros: Great picture, when it works
Cons: very very poor quality, Blow dryer noise when TV is on, Lamp blew with 3 weeks, Service department treats customer as QA department
STAY AWAY. RUN FORREST!
The "service department" is more concerned about making decisions based on "economic sense" than servicing their QA department aka customer.

Great HD and TV size for its price!!!
Pros: Clear and stunning pics, great color decoding, easy set up
Cons: Need to wait for TV to turn on/off. No PIP when using HDMI.
My JVC light engine passed away in 5 months time, bought it in May died in September 2005. Under warranty JVC replaced it but technician would not go out to fix it so I have to bring it to them in Riverside, CA. After a month, in October the lamp went out called JVC, again under warranty, mailed a replacement lamp and received it in 4 days. The tv pic is great when working! So which part breaks down next?

The best HDTV for the money with an incredible picture
Pros: Razor sharp clarity, good selection of featues, speakers are below screen so TV fits most spaces, good name brand, outstanding warranty support
Cons: Noisy cooling fan
I did have a problem with the picture at first (color went to metalic blue) and was not sure why, but JVC tech came out on site and completely replaced the internal unit.....Let's face it, this stuff does happen. JVC didn't screw around with me at all. Just took care of the problem. No fool-in around! At no cost! Great warranty support and service. You will not be disappointed!

Excellent picture, value
Pros: Size relative to price, brightness, color, design athetics, speaker quality, connectivity options
Cons: I keep waiting for something to go wrong based on the relatively low rating and some user comments
I am your basic guy... picked up a Sharp 32" TV I bought from a flea market (refurbished) for $200 back in 1995, never had any problem with it, actually thought it was a decent set. Ah, simpler times...
But when I actually decided to buy something real several months ago, I realized my knowledge of TV's was obsolete. I am fairly technical, but I wasn't prepared for all of this. Give me a break! I thought it would be basically deciding which picture I liked best at my local retail outlet, but then I realized I didn't have all of my options in front of me, and more importantly didn’t speak the language: HDTV, resolution, black levels, red push, pincushions, geometry errors, DVI, HDMI, connectivity?? What?? Don’t you just plug it in and hook up the coaxial?
The reviews on CNet were ultimately not helpful, not because they weren't insightful, but because I had no frame of reference... who are you people? Can I even trust your opinion? Are you normal like me? haha Well, there in lies the problem... as you're reading this, you have no idea who I am so I'd imagine my review is not that helpful either.
On that premise, I tried to boil this down to what is objectively true.
1. This TV has had no issues since I purchased it 3 weeks ago.
2. The picture is bright, even from 30 ft away.
3. The colors are accurate (oops, subjective)
4. No reflective protective screen shield; ambient light and daytime watching less subject to reflections
Go find this TV at a local retail shop and compare it with other DLP and LCD projection sets nearby. You need to see the picture. It is amazingly clear (as are the others) but what will sell you is the brightness. It feels like the other sets are just downright dull.
I don't know what else to say. Like you I read all the review, looked through the entire site, compared, contrasted, contemplated, worried, hesitated, asked retail sales people at dozens of places...
At the end of the day I am happy with my decision. My first HDTV was a success.
Bottom line, you can spend twice as much for a comparable size in DLP, LCD, and 5x as much for a plasma, but take my advice and save some cash with this great and underrated TV, and spend your savings on a better surround sound system.
Or for god sake man, buy your wife something – where are your priorities any way?
Good luck!

Pros: We love this TV!!The picture is great with the DVD player(Samsung HD 841), which is of good quality. DVD's which are digitally re-mastered are crystal clear-there are no lines or blurs. All the latest play great, and TV as well.
