Upside: Each of the four HDTVs has an ATSC tuner and a CableCard slot, enabling the reception of high-def programming without additional tuner boxes. All have a native resolution of 1,280x720, which means they should be able to display every detail of 720p material. (1080i is downconverted to fit the pixels.) They also feature the TV Guide On-Screen EPG, which provides free TV listing information. Their connectivity is highlighted by two HDMI ports, two FireWire ports, a digital audio output (coaxial), and three A/V inputs. We have not yet reviewed any of these sets, but Mitsubishi claims to have incorporated some black-level enhancing features to offset LCD's historical disadvantage in this area when compared to DLP (click here for more info).
The less-expensive WD-527 sets have two component-video inputs, while the step-up WD-528 sets have three. In addition to minor styling differences, the WD-528 models have additional video processing that supposedly increases contrast and black-level performance even further. They also feature fully illuminated remote controls and include a digital audio cable.
Downside: Although Sony hasn't released pricing on its 2005 line of LCD sets as of press time, we expect these Mitsubishis to be more expensive than the Sonys of comparable size. The WD-520 series lacks a PC input, which makes it more difficult to surf the Web on your new big screen. In addition, this is Mitsubishi's first attempt at LCD rear-projection TVs, so we can't speculate on image quality based on previous performance.
Outlook: If the prices of these sets remain higher than those of category leader Sony, we expect them to be less popular. Mitsubishi usually offers a mix of features and solid performance that appeals to more videocentric buyers who don't mind paying extra. The company's claim of better black level is particularly interesting, but we won't know how the WD-528/528 series stacks up until we see one in person. This page will be updated when we publish a hands-on review.
