"Overall Great TV but Picture Quality Pale in Comparison to Sony KDS-60A2000" on by JulienRich

Pros: Deep, vibrant colors create a striking "presence" with any media. Built-in sound is relatively great. Camera card reader is functional and handy.

Cons: Detail and definition of HD and non-HD media are absolutely inferior to Sony KDS-60A2000 and KDS-50A2000

Summary: I currently own a Sony KDS-60A2000 and have been so impressed with that television that I decided to put a second rear-projection HDTV in the house. After extensive research and showroom inspections I decided on and ordered the Mitsubishi WD-65831.

Having experienced the Sony unit for several months my expectations were very high on the Mitsubishi.

I am impressed with many aspects of the unit. It's a little better than my current Sony in many aspects; including color, sound, connections, build quality, on-screen menu convenience and flexibility and overall appearance as a piece of furniture.

However, I found that the Mitsubishi's overall picture quality is substantially inferior to the Sony because of the Sony's ability to display crisp, high-resolution images and color separation that create an overall 3D quality.

I put the Sony and Mitsubishi side-by-side for comparison; before moving them to their final locations in my home. I used the same input devices for both; including cabling such that I could rule out any discrepancy from outside factors.

The Sony unit has a picture quality like that of a high-end laptop LCD display. It's a breath-taking masterpiece. 1080i source media looks real, natural and dimensional; as if you could reach into the box and touch the objects in the video. The tiniest details are incredibly crisp and clear. Colors stay where they're supposed to and textures create the illusion of reality.

The Mitsubishi picture looks good but is not even in the same class as the Sony. It has noticeable jaggies and pixilation from most sources that I tested; while these same sources (including cabling) were impeccable on the Sony.

Quite frankly, non-HD sources on the Sony TV looked better than some 1080i videos on the Mitsubishi; with regard to clarity, crispness and resolution.

Color and contrast are better on the Mitsubishi. Blacks are deep and saturated while whites and bright colors are bold and beautiful. These elements are great on the Sony as well; but the Mitsubishi is better.

All of these areas where the Mitsubishi is better than the Sony are collectively not enough to offset the one crucial area where the Sony is far superior - overall picture quality.

Without having a direct comparison between the two models, I doubt that anyone would find fault with the Mitsubishi picture or overall quality. But watching the two units side-by-side brings undeniable conclusions. The Sony picture quality has a stunning, dimensional beauty that the Mitsubishi cannot achieve.

I called Mitsubishi technical support and walked through settings and connections to ensure against user error. They confirmed that I was tapping the best possible picture out of the Mitsubishi.

Ultimately I regret that I chose the Mitsubishi and wished that I had purchased another Sony unit.

"Best of Breed" on by RommelB

Pros: Excellent picture quality adjustments, very bright and crisp picture, color accuracy is outstanding, Overall SD and HD picture quality is excellent!

Cons: Picture easily unaligned, Trapezoid picture

    Summary: Picture Quality:
Compared to any other RPTV, the 831 series has the best overall picture quality. Contrast and brightness can be perfect without turning it all the way up. With the Perfect Tint feature, color accuracy on the 831 can be "Perfect". It can display very nice contrast and brightness without turning it all the way up and burning the set. If you've never seen Hi-Def on the 831, then you've never seen good quality Hi-Def. For a 65" RPTV, the standard def picture quality is very good. Better or as good as most of the smaller rptv's.

    Cabinet:
The bezel on the 831 is super thin. That's how tv's should be. Less plastic and more screen. It also has a black high gloss finish that makes the set looks very nice without a lot of glare. When watching in theater like lighting, the cabinet almost disappears and all you see is the what you want to see... the movie.

65" of screen, excellent picture quality with very user friendly adjustments, and excellent exterior, the Mitsubishi WD-65831 is the best bang for your buck.

I think the competion for this set would be the Sony KDS-R60XBR2 and a pro-calibrated Samsung HL-S6188W. IMO the R60XBR2 will give you the same picture quality as the 831. It does not have perfect tint but with it's recent price drop, it's another set to consider. I saw a few pro-calibrated Samsung HL-S6188W. Most may not agree, but I think it gave me a very good picture quality and can be compared with the 831 and the Sony XBR2. Since it's been out for several months, the price has also decreased.

This tv is so good, I forgot to mention the Cons. LoL

    Alignment:
If you're like me who has the set and stand sitting on carpet and has to move it around by yourself, you might want to be very slow when moving it. Since I can't get a good grip to carry a 65" rptv, I have to grab one side of the stand and pull it. and since it's on carpet, it comes to a hard stop causing the set to shake a bit. Well I found out huge rptv's can easily be unaligned and this will tilt the picture. I had to call a service tech to come down and align it. It only take a few minutes.

    Trapezoid Picture:
This was very annoying. It was only noticeable when watching in 4:3 ratio. The bottom of the screen was an inch wider than the top. The service tech also fixed this with no problem.

"Great Picture, BUT" on by HerzogShuffle

    Pros: Stellar picture!

Cons: Made my eyes feel like they were being flushed with boiling lemon jiuce after 20 minutes of viewing

Summary: Here's a review you're going to need to take with a grain of salt. The 65" Mits WD-65831 is an amazing set. The colors are vibrant, the blacks are unparalleled, and the resolution is magnificent.
Unfortunately, I'm (apparently) one of the few people who suffer what I'm going to coin "DLP sickness." At first, I'd get splitting migraines after an hour of viewing. These eventually subsided, but were replaced with chronic eye soreness after any viewing session lasting more than 20 minutes. Doing a cursory google of "DLP headaches" and "DLP eye strain," I found that I wasn't the only one. CNET calls the headaches a pervasive myth, but that assertion proved wrong.
FYI, I had the contrast and brightness cranked down to near-dim levels (11 and 20, respectively), and the set was 14 feet from my couch, so these should not have been factors. I replaced the set with the SXRD 60A2000, and I'm suffering no eye problems.
Let this be a lesson to all who would purchase the mighty WD-65831: Sit in front of one for at least an hour before purchasing. If you don't feel like your eyes are filled with hellfire, then go for it!

"Trouble with my unit" on by gmckie

    Pros: Great picture

Cons: Intermittent problems; poor Mitsubishi support or caring

Summary: I have owned this Mitsubishi since 9/4/06. It has a great picture with mediocre sound quality.

Started to notice intermittent flaky problems within the first 90 days.

    1. Would lose programming of deleted channels and favorites. A real pain to set up channels because there is no channel memorization when using a digital cable card.

    2. Would get blue screen saying loss of signal when the signal was never lost.

    3. Will intermittently shut off or will not power on.

    4. Kept getting airflow blocked error message. Checked airflow intake and it was not blocked. After finding no mention in manual about this and having service tell me that it will be a week before they can come out to fix my now dead Mitsubishi, I removed the lamp and found some light dust build up on one of the lamp filters. Blew it off and that problem is been resolved. Nothing in the manual tells you that this could be a problem.

    5. Called Mitsubishi Customer Relations, was told wait time is 84 (eighty four) minutes. Elected to have a call back. Someone called back and told me that someone from tech support will call me on Monday. The phone call never came.

    6. Local Mitsubishi repair representative told me that they can only fix the tv if it is dead and CAN NOT fix intermittent problems. What happens on day 366 when it is out of warranty and the problem is no longer intermittent?

Ask yourself, If something is on sale, Is it worth it if you're going to have nothing but problems with it?

My experience trying to get satisfactory warranty work has been less than satisfactory.

    Updated
As previously stated, I have experience numerous problems w/ this unit approximately 90 days after purchased. I travel allot and have not had the chance to have it repaired.

Finally after experiencing the “air flow blocked” error message and shutting off a couple times a day, I had to make the time to get it fixed. My local warranty repair center came and got it on May 22nd and kept it for 16 days.

After doing an internet search for the “air flow blocked” error message, I discovered that others have experienced this problem and it came down to a failed sensor, sensor connector, or logic board failure.

Ten days after the unit being serviced, it is turning on every time I turn it on, and staying on. This unit has a fabulous picture and mediocre sound.

If you choose to purchase this unit or any other Mitsubishi product, just hope that you do not experience any problems with it because actual Mitsubishi support is non-existent.
    Updated
Almost one year from the original problems and six months since its repair, the unit would not power on this morning twice w/o having to hit the reset button.

"Bad Picture..... Terrible Service" on by millergcwc

    Pros: design is nice....

Cons: Color is Terrible..... Can't get Service on New TV

Summary: I have had this televison for 6-months and still can't get service!! The tint is messed up... I get green grass but with green faces on people and good skin tones with brown grass or trees!! Try watching a football game with brown grass to get non-green faces!!! It has some great HD quailty features when green isn't needed. I need a service tech...but they can't find one...meaning Circuit City!! They have the worse Service I have ever tried to use!! With my Dell computer the service was amazing....next day..... with this TV the problem is going into baseball season..... Thanks for reading
