"Reliability problems and lousy service spoil an otherwise fine product." on by raincityseattle

Pros: Beautiful picture, nice features when it works

Cons: Poor service network, months long wait for repairs.

Summary: My four-month old, 73" Mitsubishi TV failed five weeks ago, and according to Mitsubishi's "Customer Relations Department", it will take up to additional 6 weeks to get the parts. Add at least one week to get the shop to send someone out and this warranty repair will take at least TWO MONTHS and possibly more than THREE MONTHS to be completed.

I've owned 3 Mitsubishi big screens in the past 8 years. While the picture and features of the sets have been very nice, I've had reliability problems with all three, including this model. Failure of an expensive item like this within the first six months is annoying and inconvenient. Mitsubishi's poor service network and extraordinarily long service times have spoiled this customer's experience completely.

I've had nearly identical service delays with all three sets, starting in 1999. Each set has taken two to three MONTHS to get repaired under warranty after failure. When this kind of problem occurs repeatedly over eight years, one must conclude that this kind of poor service is EXACTLY what Mitsubishi strives for. Very disappointing.

"Thrilling Detail and Color Accuracy" on by fotoose

Pros: 1. Great detail and contrast 2. Brightness that can handle the brightest ambient light conditions 3. Very accurate color reproduction

Cons: Speakers have a harsh metalic sound. Female voices are especially grating.

Summary: We bought the WD-73734 and we are delighted with it. The speakers can use improvement, but we expected that from the product specs and the sound in the stores. We hope to remedy that with our own speakers and receiver, if we can get them to work. The set was picture-perfect out-of-the-box, though we toned down bulb setting to conserve bulb life, and use "natural" setting at night due to brilliance of other settings. Colors do not wash out even under our very bright ambient light during the day. This set has astounding color accuracy, even the greens and shades of black. We are happy with our choice.

Sorry to have to report that the screen now has a dim glow replacing that wonderful picture. The dealer will be swapping a new TV for the old new TV, next week. We hope for better luck.

Sadly, I have to report another issue. About a month after the switch-out set was received, we lost sound for approx. a second at a time. This loss became more frequent, then resolved itself. Then the problem recurred but became more frequent. One day we lost sound for 2 hours and it then came back as mysteriously as it was lost. Now it is just a loss for a second or so, but too frequently to tolerate. The picture occasionally blanked as well, but not often.
Since our dealer could not send a tech to our area for a month, and I did not want to deal with company, the dealer allowed us to, ineffect, trade-up, for a reasonable price. We are hoping the 73833 is better.
It is fair to note that other folks have not had trouble with Mitsubishi. Maybe we are just unlucky.

Sadly, I have to report another issue. About a month after the switch-out set was received, replacing the set that lost the picture, we lost sound on the new one for approx. a second at a time. This loss became more frequent, then resolved itself, for a while. Soon thereafter, the problem recurred but became more frequent. One day we lost sound for 2 hours and it then came back as mysteriously as it was lost. Another time we lost it for only a few minutes. However, we still have a repeating loss of sound for a second or so. Rarely, the picture blanks momentarily as well, or a while band shows on the lower third of the screen. Mostly, the sound interuptions are the issue.
Since our dealer could not send a tech to our area for a month, and I did not want to deal with manufacturer, the dealer kindly allowed us to, ineffect, trade-up, for a reasonable price. We are hoping the 73833 is better.

"Great picture but other issues" on by mattbo01

Pros: Large picture. Great when viewed in HD. We love the picture when there aren't issues.

Cons: Bulbs seem to go out fairly quickly or at least need to be changed to keep a good quality picture. Fan does hum loud sometimes. Now we are getting black and white spots all over the screen.

Summary: We have owned this TV for 3 1/2 years now. Overall we have been happy with the TV but if we didn't have the extended warranty, I would be really pissed.

Last year we had to replace the bulb after almost 3 years so not terrible but it really needed changing sooner as we had not realized how bad the picture had become until we saw it with a new bulb. I now have it in my calendar to have the bulb replaced every year until my 5 year warranty runs out.

Now we are seeing black and white spots all over the screen. It started out as one black spot. Then we were getting more and more black spots. Now some of the black spots are turning into white/bright spots. We just had the repair company here and they said bascially the main part that shoots the image on the screen has to be replaced. I am sure this would be very expensive and I am very glad we got the extended warranty. I would be very upset if we did not have the warranty as this was not a cheap TV and it should last a lot longer than 3 1/2 years.

There are a lot of options out there now if you want a big screen. If you don't just have to have the 73" screen I would not recommend this set. I would definitly not recommend it unless you buy the extended warranty.

I will say our TV is on probably more than most as we work out of our home and it is on most days as we work so we can watch the news, etc...

Hope this helps and good luck with your TV purchase!!

"I love my 73" TV" on by gingie7

Pros: Low price for a 73" HD TV; beautiful picture and no problems.

Cons: Audio is poor, but that is most TV's with no surround sound system.

Summary: I've had this TV for 3 years. I have had no problems. Picture is beautiful. I do have Directv HD package and I'm sure that makes it all the better. I would definitely buy this TV again. My son purchased the 65" Diamond Series and has replaced bulbs 3 times. I have not had any bulb problems.

"GREAT TV for over 3 years!!" on by PapaRoxy

Pros: Picture Quality is incredible, hook ups. ease of use.

Cons: makes you want all your TV's this big.
may cause you to look down at your friends and their small 60' TV.
    not made for little rooms(duh)

Summary: Bought this tv in Jan of 2007 from circuit city. got the extended warranty. It has worked flawlessly for the past 3 years. This week the lamp went out and I called to see about the warranty. The new OEM lamp was mailed out that day(saturday) 100% free of charge. I have not had the sound drop-out or any other problem that others speak of. My TV is on around 16 hrs a day EVERY day so 3 years out of the lamp is perfectly fine lifespan for me. I have a PS3 hooked up and blurays are crazy GOOD on this TV. Needless to say UFC fight nights are packed at my house. I will be buying MITSUBISHI again!! 100% recommend.
